The impact of particulate matter 2.5 on the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The convoluted element of PM2.5 may cause various biological reactions. Nowadays, few studies have indicated the long-term health effects of PM2.5 on HCC. Therefore, this meta-analysis first aims to obtain more precise estimates of the effects of PM2.5 exposure on HCC to assess the strength of the evidence. METHODS: A combination of computer and manual retrieval was used to search in Medline through PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science. Review Manager 5.3 software was used to examine the heterogeneity among the studies. RESULTS: Finally, 8 qualified articles meet the inclusion criter

Personal exposure to PM2.5 in five commuting modes under hazy and non-hazy conditions.

Effective reducing exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during commuting can help lower the risk of adverse health effects therefrom; however, few studies have examined the influence of different background levels of air pollution-particularly in China where PM2.5 concentrations are high globally. In this study, personal sampling was conducted to measure individual exposure during five different modes of commuting (bus, metro, car, bicycle and walking) in Shanghai, China. A total of 125 measurements were conducted for five days under haze and non-haze conditions, following which the cor

Association between fine particulate matter and heart failure hospitalizations: a time-series analysis in Yancheng, China.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is a global public health problem of increasing importance. The association between acute exposure to air pollution and HF has been well established in developed countries, but little evidence is available in developing countries where air pollution levels are much higher. OBJECTIVES: To explore the associations between PM2.5 and HF hospitalizations in Yancheng, China. METHODS: In this time-series study, daily HF hospitalizations admitted in three major hospitals in Yancheng from May 1, 2015 to Apr 30, 2020 were collected. We used a generalized additive model w

The joint association of physical activity and fine particulate matter exposure with incident dementia in elderly Hong Kong residents.

OBJECTIVE: The evidence for the beneficial effects of physical activity (PA) and potentially detrimental effects of long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on neurodegeneration diseases is accumulating. However, their joint effects remain unclear. We evaluated joint associations of habitual PA and PM2.5 exposure with incident dementia in a longitudinal elderly cohort in Hong Kong. METHODS: A total of 57,775 elderly participants (≥65 years) without dementia were enrolled during 1998-2001 and followed up till 2011. Their information on PA and other relevant covariates were collect

Health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds at daycare facilities.

Children are particularly vulnerable to many classes of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detected in indoor environments. The negative health impacts associated with chronic and acute exposures of the VOCs might lead to health issues such as genetic damage, cancer, and disorder of nervous systems. In this study, 40 VOCs including aldehydes and ketones, aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, cyclic terpenes, alcohols, and glycol ethers were identified and qualified in different locations at the University of Missouri (MU) Child Development Laboratory (CDL) in Columbia, Miss

Prenatal particulate matter exposure and Intrauterine Fetal Death.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine Fetal Death (IUFD) is a rare and tragic pregnancy complication. The main causes for IUFD are largely unknown. Particulate Matter (PM)2.5 exposure has been suggested as an IUFD risk factor. OBJECTIVES: To study the association between maternal PM2.5 levels and IUFD risk, to address ethnicity as a possible effect modifier, and to identify a prenatal period during which PM2.5 is most harmful regarding IUFD risk. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study, which included pregnant women at the Soroka University Medical Center between the years 2003-2017. Estimated PM2.

Short-Term Cumulative Exposure to Ambient Traffic-Related Black Carbon and Blood Pressure: MMDA Traffic Enforcers' Health Study.

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution is linked with acute alterations in blood pressure (BP). We examined the cumulative short-term effect of black carbon (BC) exposure on systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) BP and assessed effect modification by participant characteristics. SBP and DBP were repeatedly measured on 152 traffic enforcers. Using a linear mixed-effects model with random intercepts, quadratic (QCDL) and cubic (CCDL) constrained distributed lag models were fitted to estimate the cumulative effect of BC concentration on SBP and DBP during the 10 hours (daily exposure) and 7 days

Long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide and natural-cause and cause-specific mortality in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to air pollution is linked with increased risk of adverse health outcomes, but the evidence for the association between nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and mortality is weak because of the inadequate adjustment of potential confounders and limited spatial resolution of the exposure assessment. Moreover, there are concerns about the independent effects of NO2. Therefore, we examined the association between NO2 long-term exposure and all-cause and cause-specific mortality. METHODS: We included participants who were enrolled in health checkups in Okayama City, Japan, in 200

Predicting the emission characteristics of VOCs in a simulated vehicle cabin environment based on small-scale chamber tests: Parameter determination and validation.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from vehicle parts and interior materials can seriously affect in-cabin air quality. Prior studies mainly focused on indoor material emissions, while studies of emissions in-cabins were relatively scarce. The emission behaviors of VOCs from vehicle cabin materials can be characterized by three key emission parameters: the initial emittable concentration (C0), diffusion coefficient (Dm), and partition coefficient (K). Based on a C-history method, we have performed a series of tests with a 30 L small-scale chamber to determine these three key emission pa

Implementation of fuel additive MAZ 100 for performance enhancement of compressed natural gas engine converted from in-used gasoline engine.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has been applied worldwide for in-used engines, especially CNG engines that are converted from the conventional engines. However, it encounters the problem related to the low power and high fuel consumption of the conventional engine fueled by CNG. This paper presents an experimental study on performance enhancement of a CNG engine converted from the spark-ignition engine by the implementation of fuel additive Maz 100. In experimental work, a fuel additive supplying system was developed to impose a certain amount of fuel additive to the intake manifold of the test

Simultaneous removal of NOx, SO2, and Hg from flue gas in FGD absorber with oxidant injection (NaClO2)- full-scale investigation.

UNLABELLED: This article presents the results of an industrial-scale study (on 400 MWe lignite fired unit) of simultaneous NOx, SO2, and HgT removal in FGD absorber with oxidant injection (NaClO2) into flue gas. It was confirmed that the injection of sodium chlorite upstream the FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) absorber oxidize NO to NO2, Hg0 to Hg2+, and enhancing NOx and HgT removal efficiency from exhaust gas in FGD absorber. Mercury removal efficiency grows with the rise of degree of oxidation NO to NO2 and was limited by the phenomenon of re-emission. For NOx removal the most critical param

Pollution Characteristics, Transport Pathways, and Potential Source Regions of PM2.5 and PM10 in Changchun City in 2018.

Air pollution has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Cluster analysis, scene analysis, and the potential source contribution function (PSCF), based on the backward trajectory model, were used to identify the transport pathways and potential source regions of PM2.5 and PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of not more than 2.5 µm and 10 µm) in Changchun in 2018. In addition, the PSCF was slightly improved. The highest average monthly concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 appeared in March and April, when they reached 53.9μg/m3 and 120.0 μg/m3, respectively. The main pote

The German approach to regulate indoor air contaminants.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) and exposure to indoor chemicals are widely discussed in terms of personal discomfort and health risks. In contrast to ambient air and working environments, legally binding regulations are only partially established for indoor contaminants, and other available European guidelines are limited. To correct these deficits, the German Committee on Indoor Guide Values (AIR), formerly known as the Ad hoc Working Group (Ad hoc AG), performed health assessments of indoor air contaminants. The main tasks were to develop toxicologically based indoor air guide values, health-based

Illuminating the dark side of indoor oxidants.

The chemistry of oxidants and their precursors (oxidants*) plays a central role in outdoor environments but its importance in indoor air remains poorly understood. Ozone (O3) chemistry is important in some indoor environments and, until recently, ozone was thought to be the dominant oxidant indoors. There is now evidence that formation of the hydroxyl radical by photolysis of nitrous acid (HONO) and formaldehyde (HCHO) may be important indoors. In the past few years, high time-resolution measurements of oxidants* indoors have become more common and the importance of event-based release of oxid
