Panax notoginseng saponins have recently been reported to suppress liver fibrosis. Since ginsenoside-Rg1 is the most abundant component of P.notoginseng saponins, we investigated the effect of ginsenoside-Rg1 on experimental liver fibrosis in rats. Histological analysis revealed that ginsenoside-Rg1 significantly improved the extent of liver fibrosis in rats induced by thioacetamide. Ginsenoside-Rg1 markedly suppressed the serum levels of fibrotic markers and hepatic hydroxyproline content in rats treated with thioacetamide. Collagen is the main protein component of the extracellular matrix of bone, and it has structural and instructive properties. Collagen undergoes many post-translational modifications, including extensive crosslinking. Although defective crosslinking has been implicated in human syndromes (e.g., osteogenesis imperfecta or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome), it is not clear to what extent crosslinking is necessary for collagen's instructive properties during bone formation. Here we report that inhibition of collagen crosslinking in the mouse pre-osteoblast cell line MC3T3-E1 impairs the osteogenic program.

BACKGROUND: Medications used to augment lactation increase prolactin secretion but can have intolerable side effects. We examined the biological activity of recombinant human prolactin (r-hPRL) as preliminary data for its use to augment lactation.
