The purpose of this paper is to report the salvage of degloved digits (class III ring avulsion injuries [Urbaniak et al classification] [J Hand Surg Am. 1981;6:25-30]) using the heterodigital neurovascular island flap (originally developed by Moberg and Littler) in addition to full thickness grafting.Six fingers with class III ring avulsion injuries (Urbaniak et al classification) were included. The authors performed a retrospective review of prospectively collected data of all diabetic patients who underwent transmetatarsal amputation (TMA) for toe gangrene or neuropathic ulceration from May 2006 to June 2009. Twenty-nine TMAs were performed in diabetic patients during the study period, including 24 men and 5 women with a mean +/- SD age of 66.3 +/- 7.5 years. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of patients with crush injury in Wenchuan earthquake and the corresponding operational methods.
METHODS: From May 12th 2008 to June 18th 2008, 202 patients with crush injury of soft tissue were treated, including 110 males and 92 females. Much effort has been spent to reduce the number of amputees within the last two decades, but it remains unclear how effective the different strategies have been. We analyzed the prevalence of amputations in inpatient cases in the federal statistics. Detailed lists of all amputations coded as major amputations (OPS 5-864) and minor amputations (OPS 5-865) performed in 2005 and 2006, divided into the 4th and 5th number of the OPS-code, were provided by the Federal Statistical Office. In 2006, a total of 62,880 amputations affecting the lower extremities (2005: 63,005) were performed in Germany.

Bureau-Barrière syndrome (BBS) describes a rare destructive process affecting skin and bone resulting from an acquired unilateral or bilateral polyneuropathy. Clinically, it is characterized by a triad of symptoms, namely, acral ulcerations, polyneuropathy, and bone lesions. To date, the development of Marjolin's ulcer in the course of BBS has not been described to the authors' knowledge.
