Decreased lysosomal storage in the adult MPS VII mouse brain in the vicinity of grafts of retroviral vector-corrected fibroblasts secreting high levels of beta-glucuronidase.

A deficiency of beta-glucuronidase (GUSB) causes the multisystem progressive degenerative syndrome, mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type VII (Sly disease), which includes mental retardation. Animal homologues of MPS VII (ref. 3, 4) are models for testing somatic gene transfer approaches to treat the central nervous system in this and other lysosomal storage disorders. Previous attempts to correct murine MPS VII by gene therapy have successfully treated lesions in some organs but not in the brain. Other experimental modalities have forestalled some disease progression in the brain, but only if done

Neovascular growth factors.

Neovascularisation is the biological process of forming new blood vessels. Many conditions can initiate neovascularisation including trauma or chronic ischaemia produced by diseases such as diabetes. Neovascularisation proceeds through a series of steps beginning with destruction of the basement membrane surrounding the microvascular endothelial cells, which allows endothelial cells to extend cytoplasmic buds in the direction of chemotactic factors. Migrating endothelial cells elongate, divide and eventually form tube structures which join to form mature new capillaries. Results of in vitro ex

Peutz Jeghers syndrome (gastro-intestinal polyposis) and its complications.

In the context of aging, the susceptibility to infectious diseases increases, leading to heightened morbidity and mortality. This phenomenon, termed immunosenescence, is characterized by dysregulation in the aging immune system, including abnormal alterations in lymphocyte composition, elevated basal inflammation, and the accumulation of senescent T cells. Such changes contribute to increased autoimmune diseases, enhanced infection severity, and reduced responsiveness to vaccines. Utilizing aging animal models becomes imperative for a comprehensive understanding of immunosenescence, given the

AN EPIDEMIC IN A MOUSE COLONY DUE TO THE VIRUS OF ACUTE LYMPHOCYTIC CHORIOMENINGITIS.

A filtrable virus, identical with that which causes acute lymphocytic choriomeningitis, has been found to cause a disease in white mice. Naturally infected mice usually show no symptoms, but such animals inoculated intracerebrally with sterile bouillon or other materials develop characteristic symptoms. The same symptoms are produced by intracerebral injection of the virus into mice from a disease-free stock. Guinea pigs are very susceptible and are therefore useful for detecting the virus and for neutralization tests. The disease in both naturally infected and inoculated animals is discussed

Balantidium coli in domestic animals: An emerging protozoan pathogen of zoonotic significance.

Balantidium coli (B. coli) is an emerging ciliated protozoan parasite of zoonotic importance which causes a disease balantidiasis in a variety of host species including pigs, camels, ruminants, equines and even human. This disease has a cosmopolitan distribution with high prevalence rates in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world due to favorable geo-climatic conditions for the development and survival of the parasite in these regions. Main reservoir hosts for this pathogen are pigs and animals; acquire infection mainly by the ingestion of the food or water contaminated with the porcine

Causes of mortality in anuran amphibians from an ex situ survival assurance colony in Panama.

The success of ex situ survival assurance populations as tools for amphibian conservation depends on the health and reproductive success of founder populations. Necropsy examination and histopathology of animals that die in assurance populations are useful for the identification of population-limiting disease problems and can help to direct applied research efforts in areas such as amphibian husbandry and nutrition. This study reviewed postmortem findings in 167 frogs from 13 species that died in a large Panamanian rescue and survival assurance population between 2006 and 2011. Common problems

The contribution of animal models of aspergillosis to understanding pathogenesis, therapy and virulence.

Animal models of aspergillosis have been used extensively to study various aspects of pathogenesis, innate and acquired host-response, disease transmission and therapy. Several different animal models of aspergillosis have been developed. Because aspergillosis is an important pulmonary disease in birds, avian models have been used successfully to study preventative vaccines. Studies done to emulate human disease have relied on models using common laboratory animal species. Guinea pig models have primarily been used in therapy studies of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). Rabbits have been

Recent advances of animal model of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

In the last decade, great advances have been made in understanding the genetic basis for focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Animal models using specific gene disruption of the slit diaphragm and cytoskeleton of the foot process mirror the etiology of the human disease. Many animal models have been developed to understand the complex pathophysiology of FSGS. Therefore, we need to know the usefulness and exact methodology of creating animal models. Here, we review classic animal models and newly developed genetic animal models. Classic animal models of FSGS involve direct podocyte injury

Preliminary Ultrasonographic Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter Values in Clinically Healthy Adult Rahmani Sheep.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sheep reared in tropical and subtropical areas may develop neurological disorders associated with infectious, parasitic, metabolic, or nutritional diseases. Some of these disorders may be accompanied by increased intracranial pressure (ICP). Direct ICP measurement methods are invasive, and technically unavailable in clinical field settings. Ultrasonographic measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been reported as a noninvasive method of ICP indicator in humans and animal species. However, baseline ONSD values for clinically healthy sheep are not yet reported.

Effects of acupuncture on mild cognitive impairment via the microbiota-gut-brain axis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a critical window for intervention in neurodegenerative diseases. As emerging evidence suggests the role of microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis on cognitive health, this systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy and underlying mechanisms of acupuncture in modulating the MGB axis to alleviate cognitive decline. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane CENTRAL from inception to April 2026. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we included both clinical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) a

Epidemiological study on ticks and tick-borne pathogens in cape hare (Lepus capensis) in Algeria.

INTRODUCTION: The Cape hare (L. capensis) is one of the most common game species in Algeria, although its populations have declined in recent years. This wild lagomorph may host ticks, which act as vectors for a range of zoonotic pathogens. The purpose of this study is to fill the gaps in current knowledge regarding the presence of ticks in Algerian cape hare species and better understand the potential implications for public health. METHODS: During the 2023-2024 hunting seasons in the High Plateaus of Algeria, a total of 47 lagomorphs (44 Cape hares and 3 wild rabbits) were collected from 20

Alpha- and Beta-Coronaviruses in Humans and Animals: Taxonomy, Reservoirs, Hosts, and Interspecies Transmission.

The Coronaviridae family represents a broad group of RNA-containing viruses that infect humans and animals. This family belongs to the order Nidovirales and is divided into four main genera: α-CoV, β-CoV, γ-CoV and δ-CoV. It is particularly noteworthy that representatives of β-CoV have caused serious epidemics in humans, such as the outbreaks of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2. Although the clinical manifestations of CoVs can range from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory diseases, they share common features in their structure, modes of transmission, and natural

A Drug Screening Platform for Podocytopathies in Drosophila Nephrocytes.

KEY POINTS: We developed a fast assay testing Drosophila nephrocyte function, suitable for whole-animal drug screening in these podocyte-like cells. Rac1 overexpression disrupted nephrocyte slit diaphragm architecture, providing a screening background relevant to podocyte (patho)biology. A pilot screen using the novel podocytopathy platform identified that zacopride restores slit diaphragms despite excess of Rac1. BACKGROUND: The complex cellular architecture of the glomerular filtration barrier is not recapitulated in vitro, representing a major obstacle for drug screening. This contributes

Examining enteric nervous system function in rat and mouse: an interspecies comparison of colonic motility.

Gastrointestinal motility is crucial to gut health and has been associated with different disorders such as inflammatory bowel diseases and postoperative ileus. Despite rat and mouse being the two animal models most widely used in gastrointestinal research, minimal studies in rats have investigated gastrointestinal motility. Therefore, our study provides a comparison of colonic motility in the mouse and rat to clarify species differences and assess the relative effectiveness of each animal model for colonic motility research. We describe the protocol modifications and optimization undertaken t

Therapy free of cells vs human mesenchymal stem cells from umbilical cord stroma to treat the inflammation in OA.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is closely linked to the increase in the number of senescent cells in joint tissues, and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) is implicated in cartilage degradation. In the last decade, extracellular vesicles (EV) in combination with the use of miRNAs to modify post-transcriptional expressions of multiple genes have shown their utility in new therapies to treat inflammatory diseases. This work delves into the anti-inflammatory effect of extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) previously modified to inhibit the expression of miR-21. W

Dopamine receptor D2 antagonism normalizes profibrotic macrophage-endothelial crosstalk in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Currently there is no effective treatment for liver fibrosis, which is one of the main histological determinants of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). While Hippo/YAP (Yes-associated protein) signaling is essential for liver regeneration, its aberrant activation frequently leads to fibrosis and tumorigenesis. Unravelling "context-specific" contributions of YAP in liver repair might help selectively bypass fibrosis and preserve the pro-regenerative YAP function in hepatic diseases. METHODS: We used murine liver fibrosis and minipig NASH models, and liver biopsies from pat

Occurrence of faecal endoparasites in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in two grazing areas in northern Norway.

BACKGROUND: Semi-domesticated reindeer represent an important livestock industry and livelihood for a proportion of the human population in northern Fennoscandia. Reindeer husbandry is considered an extensive animal husbandry, where the animals are kept mostly on natural pastures, although sometimes kept in fenced areas for shorter periods. These reindeer may harbour a variety of parasites that may affect animal health and production. The relatively limited close contact between herds and owners gives limited opportunities for diagnosis and treatment of diseases in general. Furthermore, the ef

Amblyomma variegatum in cattle in Marie Galante, French Antilles: prevalence, control measures, and infection by Ehrlichia ruminantium.

We report Marie Galante as one of the Caribbean islands most heavily infested by the tropical bont tick (TBT) Amblyomma variegatum which is associated with two major diseases of ruminants: heartwater and dermatophilosis. In 2005, a survey was undertaken to assess the prevalence of TBT infestation in cattle, the prevalence of Ehrlichia ruminantium infection in TBTs, and the tick control measures implemented by livestock owners. A random sample of 195 cattle herds out of 1885 recorded on the island was investigated by thoroughly counting adult ticks on each animal and filling a questionnaire. A
