Experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in a rapid and significant necrosis of cortical tissue at the site of injury. Ureteral strictures were induced experimentally by unilateral partial ligation of the upper ureter on the left side in 56 female rabbits. Cocaine, like catecholamines or angiotensin II, may induce lethal cardiac or cerebral damage. Adult Microtus montanus were inoculated with a recently isolated strain of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense of human origin. The animals developed subacute to chronic infection and low-grade parasitemia. Histopathological examination of the heart revealed a severe pancarditis resulting in pronounced weight loss, and survival times of 5-8 weeks, preventing development of meningoencephalitis. In the brain a moderate meningitis was found, usually associated with moderate numbers of parasites in the choroid plexus and leptomeninges; however, trypanosomes were also found without tissue inflammation.

Since diabetes mellitus predisposes adults to group B streptococcal (GBS) bacteremia, a murine model of streptozotocin-induced diabetes and type II GBS bacteremia was developed to assess certain immune factors which might influence susceptibility to infection.
