BACKGROUND: One presentation of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is characterized by picky eating, i.e., selective eating based on the sensory properties of food. The present study has two aims. The first is to describe distress and impairment in individuals with ARFID secondary to picky eating. The second is to determine whether eating behaviors hypothesized to be specific to picky eating can differentiate picky eaters with and without ARFID from typical eaters (e.g., individuals not reporting picky or disordered eating) and individuals who strongly endorse attitudes associat

Clinical differentiation of acute appendicitis and right colonic diverticulitis: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Acute right colonic diverticulitis (ARCD) is an important differential diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA) in Asian countries because of the unusually high prevalence of right colonic diverticula. Due to qualitative improvement and the high penetration rate of computed tomography (CT) scanning in Japan, differentiation of ARCD and AA mainly depends on this modality. But cost, limited availability, and concern for radiation exposure make CT scanning problematic. Differential findings of ARCD from AA are based on several small studies that used univariate comparisons from Korea and

Laparoscopic Reversal of Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass for Isolated Refractory Postoperative Nausea: A Case Report.

Reversal of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is an uncommon but sometimes necessary intervention for patients who develop severe, therapy-resistant postoperative symptoms, for example, dumping syndrome, excessive weight loss, and refractory nausea. We report the case of a 39-year-old female who developed persistent nausea, anorexia, weakness, and profound weight loss following uncomplicated RYGB. Despite nutritional counselling, antiemetic therapy, and subsequent laparoscopic repair of Petersen's defect, her symptoms recurred without identifiable radiologic or biochemical abnormalities. Deep Brain Stimulation for Psychiatric Disorders: A Systematic Review of Molecular Imaging with PET.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an evolving technique for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders refractory to conventional pharmacotherapy. Neuroimaging with positron emission tomography (PET) has an important role in the planning, delivery, and post-surgical monitoring of DBS. This study aims to determine the clinical relevance of PET as a biomarker of disease status and response to DBS for patients with psychiatric disorders. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases to identify original research studies that applied P

Psychometric validation of the Italian State Urge to Be Physically Active Questionnaire in eating disorders: Psychopathology correlates and diagnostic differences.

Alongside excessive physical activity, individuals with eating disorders (EDs) frequently report a heightened urge to move and physical restlessness, which may contribute to both somatic and psychological burden. The State Urge to be Physically Active Questionnaire (SUPA-Q) specifically measures this acute, state-like dimension in ED patients, but a validated Italian version is not yet available. Two hundred thirty-three inpatients (93.6% female; Mage = 31.7 ± 14.3) formally diagnosed with EDs completed the SUPAQ-I alongside measures of compulsive exercise, exercise addiction, impulsivity, and

Benchmarking Generative Artificial Intelligence Against Human Judgment in Eating Disorder Case Recognition and Treatment Recommendations.

OBJECTIVE: Generative AI is now used to access eating disorder (ED) information, yet the suitability of its outputs remains unclear. Using two vignettes, we evaluated generative AI's ability to accurately identify ED presentations and recommend appropriate care, while benchmarking its performance against published responses from human samples. METHOD: ChatGPT-5.4 was presented with two vignettes and prompted with questions related to problem identification and treatment recommendation. Vignette one depicted a restrictive ED consistent with anorexia nervosa or atypical anorexia nervosa, with b

The changing landscape of eating disorders between the years 2015 through 2023.

PURPOSE: Despite the introduction of new eating disorder diagnoses in 2013 with the DSM-5, the characterization of population-level trends and sociodemographic patterns of these expanded eating disorder definitions remain limited. This study examined temporal changes in eating disorder diagnoses and sociodemographic characteristics among adolescents and young adults between the years 2015 and 2023 using the Epic Cosmos database, an aggregate of electronic health records across various healthcare systems. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study using Epic Cosmos data, identifying individ

Shared Brain factors in eating disorders and obesity: a systematic review of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) studies.

Eating disorders (EDs) and obesity have traditionally been conceptualized as distinct entities, yet accumulating evidence points to overlapping vulnerabilities spanning genetic, neurobiological, behavioral and psychological domains. Shared risk factors suggest convergent mechanisms, particularly in impulse control, reward processing, emotion regulation and body-image representation. In this scenario, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) offers a clinically accessible tool to examine cortical activity, although findings remain dispersed across heterogeneous studies. A systematic search

Exploring the dissociation-binge eating relationship in eating disorders: a scoping review.

Binge eating (BE) is a core symptom across multiple eating disorders (ED), yet differences in dissociative experiences between ED subtypes-and the psychological processes linking them-remain insufficiently understood. This scoping review synthesized evidence on the association between dissociation and BE in ED populations, focusing on ED diagnosis, symptom severity, potential confounders, and underlying mechanisms. Following PRISMA ScR guidelines, we searched five databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science) on July 23, 2025. Two independent reviewers screened and selected

Short-term outcomes of low-dose megestrol acetate on appetite and caregiver distress in advanced head and neck cancer: A prospective single-arm study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated anorexia is common in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy and contributes to nutritional decline, reduced treatment tolerance, and psychosocial distress. While megestrol acetate (MA) has been shown to improve appetite in various cancer populations, limited data exist on its impact on caregiver-related outcomes. This study evaluated the short-term effect of low-dose MA on patients' appetite and caregivers' eating-related distress. METHODS: This prospective, single-arm observational study included 50 adult patients with histo

Evidence of Altered Biobehavioral Threat Processes in Adolescents With Eating Disorders: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Etiological models of eating disorders (EDs) suggest there is considerable overlap between anxiety and EDs. In particular, shared clinical features across these psychiatric diagnoses suggest that common threat processes (i.e., changes in affect, cognition, and physiology, or behavior in response to a feared stimulus) underlie their maintenance. Compared to anxiety disorders, however, less is known about the neurobiological bases of threat that may give rise to and maintain ED symptoms, particularly among adolescents. Addressing this knowledge gap will aid in informing future researc

Association Between Maternal Genome-Wide Polygenic Scores for Psychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Adverse Perinatal Events: A Danish Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Phenotypic links between psychiatric disorders and adverse perinatal events are increasingly being reported, but the mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to assess how polygenic scores (PGSs) for 8 psychiatric conditions influence perinatal risk. METHODS: The main analysis included 13,085 mothers and their corresponding birth information. PGSs for psychiatric conditions were estimated using genome-wide association study data (excluding the iPSYCH cohort) via LDpred2 and used as exposures. Ten adverse perinatal events from Danish national registers served as outcomes.

Identifying multimorbidity risks in older adults: a cross-sectional study using the RGA screening data.

Approximately one in two older adults in the U.S. experiences multimorbidity, defined as the coexistence of two or more chronic diseases. The consequences of multimorbidity are significant, including increased vulnerability to acute illness, exacerbation of existing conditions, frequent hospitalizations, and elevated medical costs. Identifying the risk factors for multimorbidity in advance can guide healthcare service decision-making and help prevent adverse outcomes. This study examines the presence of multimorbidity (i.e., self-reported as having five or more illnesses) and specific geriatri

Childhood adversity and empathy in eating disorders: Exploring transdiagnostic profiles and socio-emotional functioning.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including abuse and neglect, have been associated with difficulties in developing empathy. People with eating disorders (EDs) often report higher rates of ACE and display empathy-related impairments, which may contribute to maladaptive interpersonal functioning. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the associations between childhood adversities and empathy-related outcomes in individuals with ED compared to a general population sample (GP).
