BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) as well as with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), also a known cardiovascular risk factor. However, it is not known if RA is a predictor of adverse outcomes in patients with CKD. We hypothesized that among a cohort of patients with CKD, RA would be associated with an increased risk of mortality.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 3939 participants with CKD from the prospective Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) study. The primary outcome

S100A9/S100A8 (calprotectin), a member of the S100 protein family, has been shown to play a pivotal role in innate immunity activation. Calprotectin plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as it triggers chemotaxis, phagocyte migration and modulation of neutrophils and macrophages. Higher calprotectin levels have been found in synovial fluid, plasma, and serum from RA patients. Recent studies have demonstrated better correlations between serum or plasma calprotectin and composite inflammatory disease activity indexes than c-reactive protein (CRP) or the erythroc

IMPORTANCE: Although evidence is emerging that autoimmunity may be associated with neurodegeneration in glaucoma (beyond intraocular pressure-mediated damage), there is limited evidence connecting rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the most common autoimmune disease, with the risk of developing primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether RA is associated with increased risk of POAG among Korean older adults.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A nationwide propensity-matched cohort study was conducted using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Senior cohort

A diverse group of idiopathic inflammatory arthritis that affects children under the age of 16 and lasts six weeks or longer is known as juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) or juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). It causes joint pain and morning stiffness, and the affected joints swell and become difficult to move. During flares, patients may experience flu-like symptoms such as muscle aches and fatigue. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are the mainstay of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment. If necessary, immunosuppressive medications can be administered in stages. Nonsteroidal

Baricitinib is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor used to treat refractory rheumatoid arthritis and blocks the subtypes JAK1 and JAK2. A 35-year-old man with seronegative rheumatoid arthritis complicated by bilateral severe non-granulomatous panuveitis was resistant to steroid treatment, multiple conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (methotrexate and salazosulfapyridine), and TNF-α inhibitors (adalimumab and infliximab). Therefore, the TNF-α inhibitors were switched to baricitinib to decrease the activity of systemic arthritis. Along with the amelioration of inflammatory activity in

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the causative agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). The effects of HTLV-1 on health are not fully elucidated. Epidemiological studies have shown that the prevalence of HTLV-1 infection is high in patients with rheumatic diseases. The prevalence of comorbidities, such as Sjögren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is higher in patients with HAM/TSP than the in general population. Studies have shown the effects of HTLV-1-infection on the clinical course of RA. Maj

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive articular disease. In addition to damaging the joints, it may cause multiple organ complications, and considerably impair the patient's functioning. Elderly patients with RA report pain, fatigue, mood disorders, sleep disorders and insomnia, accompanied by weakness, poor appetite, and weight loss. All these factors combined have an adverse effect on the patient's perceived quality of life (QoL). Due to the chronic nature of RA and the high risk of malnutrition in this patient group, the present study investigated QoL, activities of daily living, and f

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation in the joints. Although methotrexate (MX) is the first-line treatment, side effects are common. This study aimed to investigate the effects of quercetin (QT) and/or MX on inflammation and systemic toxicity in a rat model of RA. Male Wistar rats were divided into control (C), RA, QT, MX, and QT + MX groups (n=6). The RA induction consisted of three intra-articular injections of methylated bovine serum albumin (1×/week) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). QT (25 mg/kg) and/or MX (0.75 mg) administration occurred b

The endothelial glycocalyx (EG) is essential for proper function of the endothelium and for vascular integrity, but its role in premature atherogenesis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has not been studied yet. EG impairment can play a role in pathogenesis of vascular disease, and one of its characteristics is shedding of syndecan-1 from endothelial cells. Syndecan-1 shedding is mediated by matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and counteracted by tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-1. Cardiovascular disease risk in RA is reversible by disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), but the

Rheumatoid arthritis as a common autoimmune inflammatory disorder with unknown etiology can affect 0.5-1% of adults in developed countries. It involves more than just the patient's joints and can be accompanied by several comorbidities and affect cardiovascular, pulmonary, and some other systems of the human body. Although cytokine-mediated pathways are mentioned to have a central role in RA pathogenesis, adaptive and innate immune systems and intracellular signaling pathways all have important roles in this process. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, glucocorticoids, conventional disease-

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic immune disease characterized by synovitis and bone destruction. The osteoclasts play a critical role in pathologic bone loss during inflammatory arthritis. In this paper, we report that Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-6Rα/gp130, IL-11, IL-27, and Matrix Metallo Proteinases (MMP)-9 expression results in serum of the RA group were significantly higher than that of the control group. The gp130 positive cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) and osteoclast-like cells (OLC) which had been induced with receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL) in

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), partly due to an increased prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, but also due to chronic systemic inflammation inducing atherosclerotic changes of the arterial wall. The aim of this study was to determine whether anti-inflammatory therapy for the treatment of RA has favorable effects on arterial wall inflammation in RA patients.
METHODS: Arterial wall inflammation before and after 6 months of anti-inflammatory treatment was assessed in 49 early and established RA patients using 18F-fluo

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at approximately 1.5-fold risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared with the general population, a phenomenon resulting from combined effects of traditional CVD risk factors and systemic inflammation. Rheumatoid synovitis and unstable atherosclerotic plaques share common inflammatory mechanisms, such as expression of proinflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and IL-6. RA patients are undertreated in terms of CVD prevention, and structured CVD prevention programmes are warranted. Alongside managem
