[From myocardium to the atherosclerotic plaque: new perspectives in cardiologic imaging].

Molecular imaging is an innovative and promising approach in cardiology for functional characterization of atherosclerosis. Nuclear, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging have been used for assessment of atherosclerosis of large and small arteries in several clinical and experimental studies. Positron Emission Tomography with fluorodeoxyglucose can measure metabolic activity and vulnerability of atherosclerotic plaques, identifying individuals at risk of future cardiovascular events. Magnetic resonance imaging can quantify carotid artery inflammation using iron oxide nanoparticles as contr…

Homocysteine induces vascular endothelial growth factor expression in differentiated THP-1 macrophages.

Hyperhomocysteinemia has been reported to be an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis. However, the molecular mechanism by which hyperhomocysteinemia can lead to atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis has not been completely described. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been proposed to play an important role in the progression of atherosclerosis. In the present study, we hypothesized that hyperhomocysteinemia might be associated with VEGF expression in atherosclerotic lesions. We investigated VEGF mRNA expression and VEGF secretion by homocysteine (Hcy) in …

A sandwich ELISA based on anti-apo(a) and anti-apo B monoclonal antibodies for lipoprotein(a) measurement.

Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is one of the most important independent risk factors for the prediction of premature atherosclerosis. Lp(a) is a low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-like particle which contains a glycoprotein (apoprotein(a)) disulfide linked to apo B-100. We describe a sandwich ELISA based on an anti-apo(a) monoclonal antibody (MAb) and an anti-apo B MAb for the quantitative determination of Lp(a) in human serum. The assay is sensitive, precise and specific. Samples with different apo(a) isoforms had a linear response in a range of 3-70 mg/dl of Lp(a). Correlations between the ELISA and a co…

Chemical comparison of intimal elastin in the human cerebral and coronary arteries and aorta. A preliminary note.

The purpose of our experiments was to clarify the relationship between the susceptibility to atherosclerosis and chemical composition in the human cerebral, coronary arteries and aorta, and the concentration and composition of human arterial intimal elastic tissues were measured. In the cerebral arteries, the concentration of hot alkali-insoluble elastin was higher than that of the coronary arteries and aortas, and gradually decreased with age. Age-related changes of the elastin in the coronary arteries were quite small. The total polar amino acids and crude ash contents of arterial elastins w…

Associations of body mass index with incident hypertension in American white, American black and Chinese Asian adults in early and middle adulthood: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study and the People's Republic of China (PRC) study.

The association of body mass index (BMI) with blood pressure may be stronger in Asian than non-Asian populations, however, longitudinal studies with direct comparisons between ethnicities are lacking. We compared the relationship of BMI with incident hypertension over approximately 9.5 years of follow-up in young (24-39 years) and middle-aged (45-64 years) Chinese Asians (n=5354), American Blacks (n=6076) and American Whites (n=13451). We estimated risk differences using logistic regression models and calculated adjusted incidences and incidence differences. To facilitate comparisons across et

Gut microbiota derived indoles are altered and associate with immune activation in moderate and severe carotid stenosis.

BACKGROUND: An imbalance of gut microbiota, their metabolites as well as inflammatory mediators have been increasingly linked to both atherosclerosis and stroke. However, data on microbiota derived tryptophan and histidine metabolites in carotid atherosclerosis are scarce. PURPOSE: We investigated serum microbiota derived indoles, imidazole propionate (ImP) and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), representing three distinct gut bacterial-related metabolites, in patients with carotid atherosclerosis compared with healthy controls with normal findings on carotid ultrasound. We aimed to examine their…

From Exposome-Scale Screening to Foam Cell Formation: Identifying Environmental Chemicals with Atherogenic Potential via Nuclear Receptor Perturbation.

Cardiovascular diseases driven by atherosclerosis are a leading global cause of mortality. However, currently identified risk chemicals account for only a small fraction of the environmental chemical burden contributing to atherosclerosis. To address this gap, we established a multi-source prioritization framework to identify pro-atherogenic chemicals among 6346 exogenous compounds predicted in human blood. The framework integrates bioactivity data for atherosclerosis-relevant nuclear receptors, including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), liver X receptor α (LXRα), farnesoi…

Lymphedema therapy in head & neck cancer with carotid stenosis: a systematic review and care pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors treated with radiation therapy are at increased risk for both lymphedema and carotid artery atherosclerosis. The coexistence of these conditions creates complex management challenges, yet no clinical practice guidelines currently address this overlap. This report aims to develop a preliminary clinical care pathway to guide lymphedema treatment in irradiated HNC survivors at risk for carotid atherosclerosis. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in June 2023 and updated in September 2025 using three primary MeSH components: hea…

Role of Lipoprotein(a) and Blood Cells Ratios in Peripheral Artery Disease.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a major global health issue. This study investigated the relationship between lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) to blood cells ratios, and PAD development. The study included 361 patients categorized into groups based on the presence of stenotic atherosclerosis in lower limb arteries (LLAs) diagnosed via duplex ultrasound. Group 1 (n = 238) had atherosclerosis at the first visit. A second visit involved 281 patients: 158 from Group 1, 32 new diagnoses (Group 2), and 91 with no atherosclerosis at either visit (Group 3). Labor…

Lenin's Stroke.

Lenin's stroke remains a matter of debate. Here, we propose to assess the potential mechanisms. Lenin died on January 21, 1924 at the age of 53 years. Although some doctors suggested that the origin of his health problems was neurosyphilis, the autopsy findings were consistent with a severe atherosclerosis. This process might account for his recurrent ischemic strokes. In view of the family vascular history, an early hereditary atherosclerosis may be proposed.

Isolated supraclinoid occlusive disease of the internal carotid artery.

Isolated supraclinoid occlusive disease of the internal carotid artery is a rare cause of cerebral ischemia. The authors of the only review of this subject concluded that it is caused predominantly by factors other than atherosclerosis. We examined 6 patients with isolated supraclinoid occlusive lesions. Five of them had one or more risk factors for atherosclerosis. Thus, the isolated stenosis of that part of the internal carotid artery does not seem to represent a particular pathologic entity.

[Characteristics of lipid metabolism and the cardiovascular system in glycogenosis types I and III].

Glycogen storage disease (GSD) is an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by early childhood lipid metabolic disturbances with potentially proatherogenic effects. The review outlines the characteristics of impaired lipid composition and other changes in the cardiovascular system in GSD types I and III. It analyzes the factors enabling and inhibiting the development of atherosclerosis in patients with GSD. The review describes the paradox of vascular resistance to the development of early atherosclerosis despite the proatherogenic composition of lipids in the patients of this group.

A cyclic azapeptide ligand of the scavenger receptor CD36/SR-B2 reduces the atherosclerotic lesion progression and enhances plaque stability in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arterial walls that develops at predisposed sites. As a major risk factor for adverse cardiovascular pathology, atherosclerosis can progress to myocardial infarction and stroke, due to the rupture of unstable atherosclerotic lesions. Macrophage uptake of modified lipoproteins and metabolic dysfunction contributes significantly to the initiation and development of atherosclerotic lesions. The cluster of differentiation 36 receptor [CD36 (SR-B2)] plays a key role in atherosclerotic lesion progression and acts as an efferocytic molecule in …

Research progress on risk factors related to intracranial artery, carotid artery, and coronary artery stenosis.

In recent decades, with the rapid development of economy, the acceleration of social aging and urbanization, and the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyles, the number of patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases has shown an increasing trend year by year. It has also become one of the important causes of disability and death in all ages and groups. Atherosclerosis is the main pathological change of ischemic cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, which mainly invades the large and medium arteries of the body circulation. In particular, cerebral artery and coronary artery lesi…

Functional consequences of chronic bladder ischemia.

The pathophysiology of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), particularly in the elderly, seems to be multifactorial. One of the factors involved may be chronic ischemia of the bladder caused by bladder outflow obstruction (male) or atherosclerosis (male/female). The mechanisms by which chronic ischemia initiates and causes LUTS and progressive bladder dysfunction, and the time course of the effects, are incompletely known. Bladder ischemia and repeated ischemia/reperfusion during a micturition cycle may produce oxidative stress, leading to denervation of the bladder and the expression of tissu…
