BACKGROUND: Return to sport (RTS) is a common goal after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) but carries a relatively high risk of reinjury with up to 20% to 25% of athletes experiencing graft rupture or contralateral ACL tear. While there is increased emphasis on establishing safe RTS criteria for athletes to return to previous activity levels, studies show that even healthy individuals have difficulty passing RTS testing.
PURPOSE: To synthesize data concerning whether healthy individuals can pass ACLR RTS rehabilitation tests.

Prolonged overactivity of the upper trapezius muscle with myofascial trigger points might cause muscle fatigue and subsequently change scapular kinematics and associated muscular activities. Scapular kinematics and associated muscular activities were investigated in 17 overhead athletes with upper trapezius myofascial trigger points and 17 controls before and after a fatigue task. Participants performed a fatigue task requiring sustained isometric scapular elevation. The outcomes included scapular kinematics (upward/downward rotation, external/internal rotation, posterior/anterior tilt) that w

RATIONALE: Acute rupture of the flexor halluces longus (FHL) tendon due to trauma or laceration is a well-known phenomenon. Partial rupture of the FHL tendon caused by tendinitis or stenosing tenosynovitis is common in ballet dancers and athletes. However, atraumatic complete rupture of the FHL is rare: as of 2018, only 7 cases of closed atraumatic complete rupture of the FHL tendon have been reported in the literature. Here, we report on a patient who presented with a closed atraumatic complete rupture of the FHL tendon during a forward lunge exercise.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 35-year-old female

PURPOSE: The participation in extreme and contact sports has grown internationally, despite the significant risk for major and multiple injuries. We conducted this multicenter study to evaluate sport-specific injury patterns and mechanisms, to characterize individuals at risk and to identify possible approaches for prevention.
METHODS: We compared demographic data, severity and patterns of injuries; and the pre- and in-hospital management from an international population-based prospective trauma database (TraumaRegister DGU®). The registry was screened for sport-related injuries, and only pat

BACKGROUND: Autologous osteochondral mosaicplasty (ie, mosaicplasty) results in satisfactory clinical outcomes and reliable return to play for patients with large or unstable lesions due to osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the humeral capitellum. However, the association between the healing of the reconstructed cartilage and clinical outcomes remains unclear.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of mosaicplasty in teenage athletes through use of clinical scores and imaging. The secondary purpose was to compare the clinical outcomes with images of centrally and laterally located lesions.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Previous investigations in many sports indicated that continued exercise, especially in hot environments, can cause high sweat rate and huge water and electrolyte losses, thus impairing the performance of athletes. Most these studies were conducted during training sessions, but rarely during an official competition. Therefore, the aim of our study was to determine pre- and post-competition hydration, fluid intake and sweat loss of young elite basketball players during the FIBA Europe U20 Championship.
METHODS: The study included 96 basketball male players, (19 ± 0.79 years) of

Object Lumbar spondylolysis occurs in approximately 6% of the population and presents with localized mechanical back pain, often in young athletes. Surgical treatment may involve decompression, lumbar intersegmental fusion, or direct repair of pars defects. Although such open procedures may effectively resolve symptoms, minimal-access approaches may additionally decrease collateral damage to soft tissues, allowing young, active patients to resume athletic activities sooner. In this study, the authors review their experience repairing bilateral lumbar spondylolyses with screw and hook construct

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the postural stability control mechanisms of young female volleyball players using wavelet analysis. The practical objective of the study was also to validate the signal derived from a baroresistive platform. The study involved 93 young female volleyball players (age: 15 years; height: 174.1 cm; body mass: 62.7 kg) and 30 female university students (age: 20.3 ± 0.6 years; height: 168 ± 3.5 cm; body mass: 61.9 ± 5.4 kg). All participants performed a standard 30-second Romberg test on an instrumented treadmill (Noraxon FDM-T) under both eyes-open and

In 2026, we are sending probes to Mars, mining metals from asteroids, and debating whether artificial intelligence should write our operative notes, yet we are still arguing about which tendon to use for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Amid the noise, the quadriceps tendon has quietly re-emerged as the pragmatic choice in a field long dominated by graft dogma. With its broad cross-sectional area, favorable collagen alignment, and lower donor-site morbidity, it offers an appealing balance between biomechanics and biology. Recent evidence shows comparable stability and superior patien

Rib bone stress injury (BSI) occurs most commonly in athletes performing repetitive upper body movements and results in significant time lost from training and competition. These injuries are seen in rowing, baseball, swimming, golf, weightlifting, and other throwing sports. Similar to BSI at other anatomical locations, a rib BSI often results from multiple factors including both thoracic/upper extremity biomechanics and metabolic factors affecting bone health. Although some rib BSIs are easier to detect, other injuries may present with vague rib or shoulder pain that can be misdiagnosed and r

BACKGROUND: Structural muscle injuries are characterized by acute and localized onset of pain. Abdominal muscle injuries are an insidious pathology in overhead athletes. However, only a few cases are reported in literature related to volleyball players, where clinical presentation may not have reflected the severity of the lesion.
CASE PRESENTATION: An elite volleyball player, a 21-year-old Caucasian female, reported the onset of mild abdominal muscular pain, confirmed on clinical evaluation findings and self-reported symptoms. Abdominal muscle ultrasound was performed following 2 weeks of co

Anomalous aortic origin of the left coronary artery from an incorrect aortic sinus has been reported as the second most common causes of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes. Intramural course of the proximal left coronary artery is considered a high-risk morphology. It is associated with a slit-like ostium and elliptical shape of the proximal artery. In this case, all pre-operative cardiac images demonstrated a round ostium and round luminal shape of the left coronary artery, which suggested no evidence of intramural course. On intraoperative inspection, although the ostium and proximal le

Progress in understanding physiological mechanisms often consists of discrete discoveries made across different models and species. Accordingly, understanding the mechanistic bases for how altering nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability impacts exercise tolerance (or not) depends on integrating information from cellular energetics and contractile regulation through microvascular/vascular control of O2 transport and pulmonary gas exchange. This review adopts state-of-the-art concepts including the intramyocyte power grid, the Wagner conflation of perfusive and diffusive O2 conductances, and the Crit

Volleyball players experience repetitive stress that involves their hands and, in particular, their fingers. Literature reports that repetitive trauma can lead to local vascular abnormalities, such as reduced capillarization and lower resting blood flow. These anomalies could be related to the presence of dysfunctional endothelium. The aim of this study is to correlate the capillaroscopic findings by nailfold video capillaroscopy (NVC) to volleyball practice in order to early detect possible anomalies and perform an adequate follow-up to avoid damages that could negatively affect sport practic

Protein-ligand interactions play a significant role in all living organisms, thereby affecting the design and application of drugs and other biomaterials. The current study reports the binding of vitamin B12 to hemoglobin, employing optical spectroscopy and computational methods. It is observed that vitamin B12 quenched the intrinsic fluorescence of hemoglobin. The nature of quenching appears to be static according to the steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The conformational changes of hemoglobin caused by vitamin B12 interactions were studied by synchronous fluorescence

Tendinopathy is a chronic and often painful condition affecting both professional athletes and sedentary subjects. It is a multi-etiological disorder caused by the interplay among overload, ageing, smoking, obesity (OB) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Several studies have identified a strong association between tendinopathy and T2D, with increased risk of tendon pain, rupture and worse outcomes after tendon repair in patients with T2D. Moreover, consequent immobilization due to tendon disorder has a strong impact on diabetes management by reducing physical activity and worsening the quality of life
