Phonological short-term memory and central executive processing in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder with/without dyslexia--evidence of cognitive overlap.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with/without dyslexia was investigated using a double dissociation design. Neuropsychological performance representing the core deficits of the two disorders was measured in order to test the common deficit hypothesis. Phonological short-term memory, morpho-syntactical language, and central executive processing (manipulating and switching) tasks were administered to four groups of 10-14 year old children (ADHD-only n = 20, dyslexia-only n = 20, ADHD+dyslexia n = 20, and controls n = 19). Comparisons of performance on these tasks were carried out

Continuous ASL perfusion fMRI investigation of higher cognition: quantification of tonic CBF changes during sustained attention and working memory tasks.

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion fMRI is an emerging method in clinical neuroimaging. Its non-invasiveness, absence of low frequency noise, and ability to quantify the absolute level of cerebral blood flow (CBF) make the method ideal for longitudinal designs or low frequency paradigms. Despite the usefulness in the study of cognitive dysfunctions in clinical populations, perfusion activation studies to date have been conducted for simple sensorimotor paradigms or with single-slice acquisition, mainly due to technical challenges. Using our recently developed amplitude-modulated continuous

Error-related event-related potentials in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, reading disorder, and math disorder.

We studied error-related negativity (ERN) and error positivity (Pe) during a discrimination task in 319 unmedicated children divided into subtypes of ADHD (Not-ADHD/inattentive/combined), learning disorder (Not-LD/reading/math/reading+math), and oppositional defiant disorder. Response-locked ERPs contained a frontocentral ERN and posterior Pe. Error-related negativity and positivity exhibited larger amplitude and later latency than corresponding waves for correct responses matched on reaction time. ADHD did not affect performance on the task. The ADHD/combined sample exceeded controls in ERN a

Dopaminergic dysbalance in distinct basal ganglia neurocircuits: implications for the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The basal ganglia form a forebrain system that collects signals from a large part of the neocortex, redistributes these cortical inputs both with respect to one another and with respect to inputs from the limbic system, and then focuses the inputs of this redistributed, integrated signals into particular regions of the frontal lobes and brainstem involved in aspects of motor planning and motor memory. Movement disorders associated with basal ganglia dysfunction comprise a spectrum of abnormalities that range from the hypokinetic disorder (from which Parkinson's disease, PD, is the best-known-e

Patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder without observed apneic episodes in sleep or daytime sleepiness have normal sleep on polysomnography.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: There is continuing speculation about the relationship between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD)/restless legs syndrome. The objective was to determine if a significant portion of children with ADHD diagnosed using DSM-IV criteria have OSA or PLMD. SETTING: Sleep disorders centers in a private practice setting and a hospital setting. PARTICIPANTS: Children aged 6 to 14 years with ADHD were enrolled. Patients with snoring were not excluded. Although patients with snoring plus either obse

Does the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder with stimulants contribute to drug use/abuse? A 13-year prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of stimulant treatment during childhood and high school on risk for substance use, dependence, and abuse by young adulthood. METHODS: A total of 147 clinic-referred hyperactive children were followed approximately 13 years into adulthood (mean: 21 years old; range: 19-25). At adolescent (age 15) and adult follow-up, probands were interviewed about their use of various substances and duration of stimulant treatment. RESULTS: Duration of stimulant treatment was not significantly associated with frequency of any form of drug use by young adulthood. Stimulant-tre

Spectroscopic axonal damage of the right locus coeruleus relates to selective attention impairment in early stage relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.

Lower levels of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), a marker of axonal damage, have been found in the normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients with low physical disability. However, its relation to the clinical status of these patients remains unclear. We explored the association between NAA levels [normalized to creatine (Cr), NAA/Cr] and a cognitive feature that is not measured by the standard scales that address functional disability [e.g. Expanded Disability Scale Score (EDSS)] in early RRMS. Given that a considerable number of RRMS patients prese

Bidirectional modulation of basal forebrain N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor function differentially affects visual attention but not visual discrimination performance.

Basal forebrain neuronal circuits, specifically the corticopetal cholinergic system, mediate attentional abilities. The effects of infusions of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and the competitive NMDA receptor antagonist DL-2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid (APV) into the basal forebrain were assessed in rats trained in an operant task designed to generate measures of sustained attention performance. Control animals were trained in a cued visual discrimination task devoid of explicit demands on attentional performance, but involving similar basic operant components as the sustained attention task. Selective attention in adults with major depressive disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis of task-specific differences and negative bias.

Several studies report that adults with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) present with a negative attentional bias compared to individuals without a history of MDD. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to: evaluate the hypothesis that selective attention differs in adults with MDD; determine whether this difference consists of a negative attentional bias (e.g., paying more attention to negative stimuli); and assess whether it is more severe with more severe MDD. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a literature search of MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and EMBASE from inception through Apr

Efficacy of the digital health application ORIKOⓇ for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults: Protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often continues into adulthood and affects several million adults in Germany. Many do not receive timely, evidence-based treatment because of long waiting times and limited access to care. Digital health applications offer a low-threshold option to provide guideline-based support. A pilot study of the present app-based program showed encouraging improvements in quality of life and reductions in ADHD symptom severity. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aims to confirm and extend the pilot findings. The primary objective is to examine whether t

Research on attention mechanism and loss function based on YOLOv5 to improve the detection method of underground personnel wearing safety helmets.

Detecting whether underground workers are wearing safety helmets has long been an essential yet challenging task in industrial safety monitoring. Due to dim lighting, occlusion, and complex backgrounds in mining environments, existing object detection models often fail to achieve satisfactory performance. To address these issues, this study proposes an improved helmet detection approach based on YOLOv5. The Squeeze-and-Excitation Network (SENet) is enhanced with a multi-scale average pooling mechanism and the smoother Swish activation function, forming a lightweight attention module named SENe

PDC-Net: A Prefrontal Dual-Channel Network with Gated Mamba Interaction for Cross-Subject Visual Attentional State Decoding.

Background/Objectives: Electroencephalography (EEG), with its high temporal resolution, non-invasiveness, and cost-effectiveness, provides a suitable modality for investigating task-related signal patterns associated with Visual Sustained Attention (VSA) and Visual Internally Directed Cognition (VIDC), but cross-subject generalization remains challenging in reduced-channel settings. This study evaluated PDC-Net under an offline GPU setting. Methods: PDC-Net uses a Temporal Representation Adaptation Block (TRAB) for local temporal transformation and feature-channel recalibration and a Cross-Bra

Frontal midline theta reduction during attentional reconfiguration links local cortical dynamics to network-level connectivity changes.

Attentional reconfiguration during transitions between task contexts induces a transient reduction of frontal midline theta (Fmθ), a well-established neural marker of focused attention. However, it remains unclear whether this transient reduction reflects changes in local cortical activity associated with specific visual information processing or a more general reorganization of network-level connectivity. Thirty-six healthy young adults performed a rule-switching 2-back task that required attentional shifts between color-based and position-based processing. Electroencephalography was recorded

Medication adherence and influencing factors in children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Medication non-adherence is widely occurring in children and adolescents with ADHD, which may lead to adverse consequences. However, the pooled adherence rate and influencing factors are inconsistent in different studies. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase (Ovid), Cochrane Library, and four Chinese Databases from inception to 20 February 2024. All types of studies were included. Two researchers independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias based on ROBINS-I, NOS, and AHRQ. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to pool the prevalence estimates and factors that

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Reduces Symptom Severity and Normalizes Neurophysiological and Attentional Reactivity in Anorexia Nervosa: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric disorder marked by restrictive eating, distorted body image, and high relapse rates. While cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely used treatment, its mechanisms of action in AN remain incompletely understood, particularly beyond self-reported symptom change. This study investigated the effects of a 12-week CBT intervention on both clinical and multimodal laboratory-based outcomes in women with restrictive-type AN. METHODS: In a two-arm, pre-post randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT07037017), 59 women with restri

The Effects of Environmental Enrichment on the Behavioral Profile of an Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Animal Model: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

In preclinical research, animal models are a valid alternative for studying both the genetics and environmental factors related to human psychopathologies. Indeed, in the last few decades, a great emphasis has been placed on the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) inbred strain as an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) animal model. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the effects of environmental enrichment (EE) on the behavior profile of the SHRs. All methods used to conduct the review were registered a priori on the PROSPERO platform (CRD420234421
