Comprehensive geriatric assessments are recommended to address polypharmacy and inappropriate prescribing during unplanned hospitalizations of older adults; however, there is limited study of these practices in emergency departments. This study described changes in prescribing following comprehensive geriatric assessment and patient experiences in a tertiary emergency department in Western Australia.

Plasmodium knowlesi is now established as the fifth Plasmodium species to cause malaria in humans. We describe a case of P. knowlesi infection acquired in Indonesian Borneo that was imported into Australia. Clinicians need to consider this diagnosis in a patient who has acquired malaria in forest areas of Southeast Asia.

Melioidosis is an infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. Most cases occur in Southeast Asia and northern Australia; <100 cases have been reported in the Americas. We conducted a retrospective study and identified 12 melioidosis cases in Panama during 2007-2017, suggesting possible endemicity and increased need for surveillance.

We examined the population dynamics of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium during seasonal salmonellosis epidemics in New South Wales, Australia, during 2009-2016. Of 15,626 isolates, 5%-20% consisted of novel genotypes. Seasons with salmonellosis epidemics were associated with a reduction in novel genotypes in the preceding winter and spring.

Recognized melioidosis-endemic areas are widening. In the South Pacific, melioidosis is endemic in New Caledonia, northern Australia, and Papua New Guinea. We report the first 4 documented cases of human melioidosis from New Caledonia. Molecular typing of 2 Burkholderia pseudomallei isolates suggests a link to Australian strains.

BACKGROUND: Chest pain is the second most common presenting symptom to emergency departments (ED) in Australia, although up to 85% of these patients do not have an acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
