OBJECTIVE: Intravesical instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is an established treatment of carcinoma in situ and recurrent superficial bladder tumours. The inflammatory reaction due to BCG provokes cystitis of short duration as a frequent side effect. When the symptomatology is severe and long-lasting, different systemic treatments have been administered with varying degrees of efficacy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have studied the treatment of severe BCG cystitis with a anaesthetic anti-inflammatory solution administered by intravesical instillations to 16 patients.

In order to determine the trend in childhood tuberculosis, case records of children diagnosed and treated for tuberculosis between January 1981 and December 1995 at the paediatric tuberculosis clinic of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital were reviewed. Of 8,829 paediatric medical cases, 1,026 (11.6%) were managed as tuberculosis. The proportion of tuberculosis cases increased steadily over the study period from 6.9% in 1981 to 22.1% in 1995. An usually high rate of both tuberculosis infection and active disease is reported in 11 of 38 nursery children in contact with a case of smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis, emphasising the susceptibility of young children to this disease. Treatment of superficial bladder cancer using BCG as an immunotherapeutic agent has proved effective. Stringent safety procedures have been introduced at Yeovil District Hospital so that this treatment is available to patients with bladder cancer, while ensuring that other patients and staff are protected from the possibility of BCG cross-infection.

PURPOSE: Intravesical immunotherapy with bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), which has become the gold standard in the adjuvant treatment of superficial bladder cancer, is hampered by local side effects. PURPOSE: We assessed the need for transurethral biopsy of the bladder at the 3-month evaluation in patients who have received intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 81 patients collectively received 83, 6-week courses of BCG between 1995 and 1997, and underwent transurethral bladder biopsies 3 months after initiation of immunotherapy. Percutaneous resection and intracavitary instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is currently being used in treatment protocols in select patients in whom the standard nephroureterectomy for upper tract transitional cell carcinoma is undesirable. The authors reviewed the histories of 133 patients with abdominal tuberculosis in Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño (Children's Hospital), Lima, Perú, between 1989 and 1991. We found morbidity higher in scholars (67.4%). Weight lost were present in all cases and malaise in 95.3%, abdominal distension in 83.72% and abdominal pain in 79.06%. Anaemia in 76.06%, ratio albumin/globulin were altered in 74.41% leukocytosis in 67.44%. Evidence of tuberculosis on chest X-ray were detected only in 62.5%.

A single dose of dacarbazine (DTIC), followed by a 5-day intravenous infusion of vindesine (VDS) was administered every 3 weeks to 103 patients with metastatic melanoma. One half of the patients were randomised to receive intravenous methanol extraction residue (MER) of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) in addition to chemotherapy, on days 7 and 14 of each course. 98 patients were evaluable. The response rates in treatment groups were 16 and 17%, respectively (confidence interval 9-24%). Neither the response rate nor the survival improved when MER was added to chemotherapy. The incidence of tuberculosis in the Austrian Tyrol and Vorarlberg has been declining over decades. In 1989 a reversal in this trend was observed. The number of initial isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis at the Federal Public Health Laboratory in Innsbruck increased by 2.2% in 1990 (137 strains), as compared with 1989 (134 strains). The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with the occurrence of viral or bacterial diseases, with vaccinations, or with operative events during childhood.
