Muscle activity and lower body kinematics change when performing motor imagery of gait.

Motor imagery (MI) is a mental simulation of a movement without its actual execution. Our study aimed to assess how MI of two modalities of gait (normal gait and much more posturally challenging slackline gait) affects muscle activity and lower body kinematics. Electromyography (biceps femoris, gastrocnemius medialis, rectus femoris and tibialis anterior muscles) as well as acceleration and angular velocity (shank, thigh and pelvis segments) data were collected in three tasks for both MI modalities of gait (rest, gait imagery before and after the real execution of gait) in quiet bipedal stance

Seriality in word reading: Kinematic insights into beginning and proficient readers.

Learning to read is a crucial milestone in children's development that has a lasting impact on socioeconomic integration and professional success. In transparent orthographies (e.g., German) bearing consistent relations between graphemes and phonemes, beginning readers rely on sequential grapheme-to-phoneme recoding. This leads to early segmental accuracy but protracts word reading fluency. The present study revisited the seriality in word reading with innovative kinematic measurements of anticipatory coarticulation, an essential feature of speech fluency. We employed ultrasound imaging to inv

Robot-Assisted Mirror Rehabilitation for Post-Stroke Upper Limbs: A Personalized Control Strategy.

To address the limitations of traditional mirror therapy in stroke rehabilitation, such as rigid movement mapping and insufficient personalization, this study proposes a robot-assisted mirror rehabilitation framework integrating multimodal biofeedback. By synchronously capturing kinematic features of the unaffected upper limb and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals from the affected limb, a dual-modal feature fusion network based on a cross-attention mechanism is developed. This network dynamically generates a time-varying mirror ratio coefficient λ, which is incorporated into the exoskele

The physiological neocerebellar extinction syndrome likely exists for human handedness but not footedness - a study on healthy young adults.

The cerebellum, a lateralised organ, plays a crucial role in motor control. Still, its involvement in hand and foot dominance remains inadequately understood, primarily in the right and left-side dominant population. A potential manifestation of this lateralisation is the neocerebellar extinction syndrome, previously linked to mild muscle hypotonia and moderate passivity in the non-preferred hand. A more precise understanding of the cerebellum's role in limb dominance patterns could provide valuable insights into motor learning, rehabilitation therapies, and neuroplasticity. This study explore

Muscle spindles provide flexible sensory feedback for movement sequences.

Sensory feedback is essential for motor performance and must adapt to task demands. Muscle spindle afferents (MSAs) are a major primary source of feedback about movement. Their responses are readily modulated online by fusimotor neurons and, in the unique case of jaw MSAs whose cell bodies lie within the central nervous system, by central synaptic inputs. They are, therefore, a powerful site for implementing flexible sensorimotor control. We record from MSAs innervating the jaw musculature of mice performing a directed lick sequence task. Jaw MSAs encode complex jaw-tongue kinematics. However,

Assessment of Muscular Fatigue on Hip and Torso Biomechanics in Adolescent Baseball Pitchers.

Johnson, AL, Kokott, W, Dziuk, C, and Cross, JA. Assessment of muscular fatigue on hip and torso biomechanics in adolescent baseball pitchers. J Strength Cond Res 39(8): 893-899, 2025-Muscular fatigue is an injury risk indicator, and its effect on pitching biomechanics warrants investigation. This study evaluated hip and torso biomechanics to measure muscular fatigue after a limited number of pitches thrown. We hypothesized that postpitching tests would reveal reduced stride length and hip and torso strength, altering hip and torso kinematics and increasing throwing arm kinetics. Adolescent ma

The impact of posterior tooth loss on the biomechanics of the temporomandibular joints.

The impact of posterior tooth loss on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is controversial. Existing studies mainly rely on clinical observation, lacking biomechanical research. This study recruited 10 healthy volunteers (Control group) and 20 patients with posterior tooth loss (PTL group). Three-dimensional maxillofacial models were reconstructed. Finite element analysis showed stress concentration in the PTL group, with stress magnitudes much higher than the Control group, especially on the tooth-missing side. Posterior tooth loss causes asymmetric TMJ stress and higher stress levels, related

Modelling Atherosclerotic Plaque Cap Mechanics: Microcalcifications Reduce Mechanical Properties in Mesenchymal Stromal Cell-Based Model.

Rupture of atherosclerotic plaque caps is the cause of many disabling or lethal cardiovascular events, such as stroke and myocardial infarction. Microcalcifications (<50 µm) have been shown, in computational models, to affect the biomechanical stability of the cap. The current study aims to develop a tissue-engineered model of the atherosclerotic fibrous cap with microcalcifications produced by mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Human MSCs are seeded in fibrin gels and cultured for 2 weeks in medium supplemented with TGF-β1 to induce smooth muscle cell differentiation and collagenous matrix for

Estimating Thorax and Shoulder Motion Using Magnetic-Free Quaternion-Based Functional Sensor-To-Segment Calibration.

Wearable rehabilitation robots rely on accurate sensing of body motion. While 9-axis inertial sensors are commonly used to measure motion, signal interpretation can be challenging for upper-limb rehabilitation due to complex and unpredictable joint movements. Other studies have addressed these inaccuracies by attaching three sensor units and using magnetometer data. However, these sensors are often used near actuators that produce ferromagnetic disturbances. Therefore, the objective of this work is to develop a methodology for estimating thorax and shoulder motion using only the orientation da

Method for Assessing Local Mechanical Properties of the Cornea Based on Spectroscopic Magnetomotive Optical Coherence Elastography.

OBJECTIVE: Current methods for assessing corneal mechanical properties are limited, particularly in their ability to provide localized information. This study proposes a novel approach based on the spectroscopic magnetomotive optical coherence elastography (MM-OCE) technique, aiming to enable non-invasive, localized evaluation of corneal mechanical properties. METHODS: Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were distributed on sample surfaces to induce vibrations via magnetic excitation. A spectral-domain OCT system combined with phase-sensitive OCT analysis tracked mechanical responses. Gelatin phant

The Impact of Participant Instructions on Lumbopelvic Rhythm During Forward Spine Flexion and Return.

Spine motion and outcome measures derived therein may be confounded by the motion instructions provided to participants during data collection. This observational analytical laboratory-controlled study explored the impact of instructions for forward flexion trials on the lumbopelvic ratio (LPR) and spine kinematics. Twenty-five participants (mean age: 25.68 [9.31] y) performed forward bending trials with general instructions and then specific instructions to avoid hip motion and follow pacing. Participants were equipped with triaxial accelerometers at the lumbar spine (first lumbar vertebra) a

Non-surgical endodontics: contemporary biomechanical preparation of the root canal system.

Treatment of apical periodontitis requires disinfection of the root canal system through means of biomechanical preparation. This is achieved by a process of shaping the root canal space while simultaneously using antibacterial agents to reduce microbiological load in the root canal system in order for inflammation of the periradicular tissues to resolve and the body to heal itself. The fundamental principles underlying this process have not changed in decades; however, in contrast, the armamentarium available to the clinician continues to evolve rapidly. Nickel-titanium file design has made a

Evaluating submarining in female human body models: Predicting occurrence and timing through biomechanics and restraint metrics.

OBJECTIVE: Submarining occurs during vehicle crash when the lap belt slips over the pelvis and loads the abdomen. Countering this motion is an interdisciplinary challenge, requiring expertise in biomechanics and restraint design to develop countermeasures and quantitative metrics to predict it. Most prior research into submarining has focused on the 50th percentile male. This study compares small female models to reference sled tests and evaluates two methods of identifying submarining occurrence and timing in Human Body Models (HBMs). METHODS: A 5th percentile female model and age-adjusted 7

Laser-Guided Visual Cueing Modulates Spatiotemporal Gait Dynamics During Transitions in Parkinson's.

This study investigated the impact of real-time laser-guided visual cues on spatiotemporal gait parameters during initiation and termination in people with Parkinson's (PwP). Fifteen PwP walked a 5-m path under uncued and laser-cued conditions while gait kinematics and center of pressure (CoP) data were collected. Results revealed that laser-guided visual cues significantly increased anterior-posterior CoP displacement during the propelling phase of gait initiation (p = .016) and improved dynamic stability, evidenced by reduced lateral asymmetry (p = .007) and decreased fractal dimension of la

Perceiving inter-leg speed differences while walking on a split-belt treadmill.

Walking is one of the most common forms of self-motion in humans. Most humans can walk effortlessly over flat uniform terrain, but also a variety of more challenging surfaces, as they adjust their gait to the demands of the terrain. In this, they rely in part on the perception of their own gait and of when it needs to be adjusted. Here, we investigated how well N = 48 participants detected speed differences between two belts of a split-belt treadmill. As participants walked at a constant speed, we either accelerated or decelerated one of the belts at quasi-random intervals and asked participan

Walking Stability and Kinematic Variability Following Motor Fatigue Induced by Incline Treadmill Walking.

Detecting motor fatigue during rigorous activities is essential for preventing injuries, falls, and over-exertion. While research has focused on developing fatigue indices using motion capture or wearable sensors, the method of inducing fatigue can impact movement patterns differently. This study compared the effects of whole-body motor fatigue induced by incline treadmill walking with localized fatigue induced by leg presses and isolated ankle movements, as investigated in our prior study. Twenty healthy young participants walked at 1.25 m/s for 5 min before (PRE) and after (POST) motor fatig

Dynamic response of soft tissue can be disregarded during femoral stem impaction.

BACKGROUND: In cementless total hip arthroplasty stems are inserted into the bone by mallet blows. Surgeons are not instructed to adjust the force of their blows to differences among patients especially with regard to weight. Whether this is linked to complications is yet unknown. This study investigated factors that could affect the mechanical behavior of the femur-tissue system. METHODS: Four cadavers were subject to two total hip arthroplasties by the same surgeon - one side via a lateral approach and the contralateral side via a direct anterior approach. Examining isokinetic knee peak torque and time to peak torque as predictors of vertical jump height in division I men's basketball players.

The vertical jump (VJ) is one of the most important movements for basketball athletes and therefore determining modifiable predictors of the VJ would aid substantially in crafting more effective training regimens. The purpose of this study was to determine if isokinetic quadriceps strength and torque predict VJ height and which characteristics and testing speed is the strongest predictor of VJ height. Fifteen subjects (age: 18.5 ± 1.0 years, height: 195.9 ± 6.9 cm, weight: 96.2 ± 13.7 kg) from a single Division I men's basketball team were recruited for this study. All participants performed a
