Patterns of linear growth among children and adolescents living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with HIV (AWH) frequently exhibit impaired growth, which manifests as stunting and wasting. We studied trajectories in leg-length (appendicular), sitting (axial), and standing height among AWH on antiretroviral therapy (ART), determining peak height velocity (PHV) and age at PHV (aPHV). METHODS: Analyses used VITALITY trial data from Zimbabwe and Zambia (PACTR20200989766029), which recruited AWH (11-19 years) established on ART to determine whether vitamin D3/calcium supplementation improves bone health. The study enrolled participants between January and December 2021

Early Life Stress and Long-Term Survival in the Hamann-Todd Collection.

OBJECTIVES: The impact of physiological stress during growth and development on mortality has been a topic of intense interest in bioarchaeology and other disciplines. In this study, we analyze the association between survival and two markers of physiological stress, linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) and adult stature, in a sample of 296 individuals from the Hamann-Todd Osteological Collection (HTOC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The HTOC is among the most well-known osteological collections in the discipline, representing low socioeconomic status individuals from early 20th century Cleveland, Ohio. A

Egg supplementation for 24 weeks does not improve linear growth or reduce small intestinal permeability in Sierra Leonean children with moderate wasting: a randomized, blinded, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Environmental enteric dysfunction and linear growth faltering are common among children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) in low-income countries. Eggs contain high-quality protein and bioactive compounds that may improve gut integrity and growth. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine if daily supplementation with whole egg powder compared with corn flour for 24 wk reduces small intestinal permeability and improves linear growth in children with MAM. METHODS: This individually randomized, outcomes-assessor and investigator-blinded, controlled trial enrolled participants a

Long-Term Efficacy and Safety of Growth Hormone in Children Suffering from Short Stature in China (CGLS): An Open-Label, Multicenter, Prospective and Retrospective, Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Several primary and secondary disorders disrupting normal growth pattern are responsible for childhood short stature (SS; height less than 2 standard deviation score [SDS] or the third percentile). Pegylated recombinant human growth hormone (PEG-rhGH) is a long-acting growth hormone which has demonstrated efficacy and safety in pediatric growth hormone deficiency. However, limited data is present on its treatment pattern, extensive population use, and long-term follow-up. Therefore, a real-world study is required to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PEG-rhGH and recombinant hum

Real-Life Growth Hormone Treatment Patterns in Children from China: A Report from Two Databases.

INTRODUCTION: Although recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) treatment has been established in China for many years for treating short stature (SS), there exists a lacuna on the current status and potential problems associated with effective usage of rhGH. The objective of this study is to investigate the real-world status of rhGH treatment in Chinese children with SS and its associated factors. METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective, observational study included children treated with rhGH from January 1, 2017, to April 30, 2024, from two registry databases in China, which included childr

The physical well-being of Indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest: Anthropometric evidence from British Columbia's jails, 1864-1913.

This paper documents the height of Indigenous men from the Pacific Northwest who were incarcerated in British Columbia's jails during a period of colonization and increasing market access. The average height of adults from a given community reflects the standard of living in that community at the time the adults were growing to maturity. After correcting for the impact of sample selection arising from prisoners' personal attributes, their home communities' access to market opportunities, and unobserved height determinants associated with exposure to the colonial criminal justice system, we fin

Correlation of anthropometric measurements with body mass index and estimation of the proportion of metabolic syndrome among overweight and obese children: a hospital-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of overweight and obesity with the help of simple anthropometric tests can prevent from development of metabolic complications in these children. Body mass index (BMI) is the most commonly used parameter but, measurements such as waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and wrist circumference (WrC) have also been studied and found to have a better correlation with visceral fat. OBJECTIVE: To correlate WC, WHtR and WrC with BMI among overweight and obese children. The secondary objective was to estimate the proportion of metabolic syndrome among

Establishing international optimal cut-offs of waist-to-height ratio for predicting cardiometabolic risk in children and adolescents aged 6-18 years.

BACKGROUND: Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) has been proposed as a simple and effective screening tool for assessing central obesity and cardiometabolic risk in both adult and pediatric populations. However, evidence suggests that the use of a uniform WHtR cut-off of 0.50 may not be universally optimal for pediatric populations globally. We aimed to determine the optimal cut-offs of WHtR in children and adolescents with increased cardiometabolic risk across different countries worldwide. METHODS: We used ten population-based cross-sectional data on 24,605 children and adolescents aged 6-18 years

The Auxological and Metabolic Consequences for Children Born Small for Gestational Age.

'Small for gestational age' (SGA) is an auxological and not an etiological definition that characterizes children born small based upon low-birth-weight and/or birth-length criteria [≥ 2 standard deviations (SD) below the mean for gestational age]. Most SGA children exhibit catch-up growth into the normal range within 6 mo of age. Overall SGA children are 4 cm shorter than expected based upon midparental height and being born SGA is a common cause of adult short stature. Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) has been shown to improve adult height by 0.9 SDs and is a safe treatment. Surprisin

Influence of maternal use of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate or zidovudine in Vietnamese pregnant women with HIV on infant growth, renal function, and bone health.

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is still widely prescribed for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected pregnant women, despite its renal and bone toxicity. Although TDF-exposed infants often show transient growth impairment, it is not clear whether maternal TDF causes infantile rickets via maternal/fetal renal dysfunction in Asian populations. This prospective observational study was conducted in Vietnam and involved pregnant HIV-infected women treated with TDF-based regimen (TDF group) or zidovudine-based regimen (AZT-group). At birth, 3, 12, and 18 months of age, and included body le
