Long-term MR follow-up of cerebral lesions in neuro-Behçet's disease.

To study the long-term evolution of cerebral lesions in neuro-Behçet's disease, MRI was carried out on 12 patients, with follow-up from 1.5 to 6 years (mean 3.5 years). On the first MRI, 66 lesions in all were found; each patient had 1-10 lesions (mean 5.5). There were 30 (46%) lesions in the brain stem, 18 (27%) in the basal ganglia region and 18 (27%) in the periventricular white matter. Of these 22 (33%) were small, 31 (47%) medium-size and 13 (20%) large lesions. On the last MRI, 60 lesions were found: each patient had 1-10 lesions (mean 5). At this time 31 lesions (52%) were in the brain

[A clinical and pathological study of diffuse axonal injury].

There is increasing evidence from human and experimental studies that the most important factor governing the outcome in head injury is the severity of diffuse axonal injuries. The authors have experienced 18 cases of severe diffuse axonal injury which showed post-traumatic coma for more than 24 hours and CT findings resembling those of shearing injuries of the cerebral white matter such as have been presented by Zimmerman et al. (1978). The consciousness levels on admission were 6 or less on the Glasgow Coma Scale and all cases were shown clinically to have primary brain stem injury. The main

Effect of naloxone on cerebral perfusion and cardiac performance during experimental cerebral ischemia.

Transient global cerebral ischemia (TGI) was induced in awake rats using the "four-vessel" occlusion model of Pulsinelli and Brierley. Blood pressure, arterial blood gases, cerebral blood flow, and cardiac output were measured during the acute (up to 2 hours) and chronic (2 to 72 hours) postischemic time periods. Coincident with the onset of TGI, cardiac output and caudate blood flow were depressed. The former returned to baseline within 30 minutes after the conclusion of TGI, and the latter progressed to hyperemia at 12 hours (81.8 +/- 4.9 vs 68.6 +/- 3.9 ml/min/100 gm tissue (mean +/- standa

Impact of recurrent laryngeal nerve lesion on oropharyngeal muscle activity and sensorimotor integration in an infant pig model.

The successful performance of a swallow requires dynamic integration between a wide range of sensory inputs and muscle activities to produce the coordinated kinematics of oropharyngeal structures. Damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) produces dysphagia in infants, with food or liquid entering the airway despite this nerve having minimal direct sensory or motor connections to the act of swallowing, apart from vocal fold closure. Previous results have demonstrated that a complete RLN lesion disrupts both performance and kinematics before initiation of the pharyngeal swallow in infants.

ATXN2-AS, a gene antisense to ATXN2, is associated with spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the gene ataxin-2 (ATXN2). ATXN2 intermediate-length CAG expansions were identified as a risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The ATXN2 CAG repeat is translated into polyglutamine, and SCA2 pathogenesis has been thought to derive from ATXN2 protein containing an expanded polyglutamine tract. However, recent evidence of bidirectional transcription at multiple CAG/CTG disease loci has led us to test whether additional mechanisms of pathogenesis may contribute to SCA2

Segment edit and segment weight optimization: two techniques for intensity modulated radiation therapy and their application to the planning for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the two functions: segment weight optimization (SWO) and segment edit (SE) in the latest XiO 4.7 radiation treatment planning system and their effect on the planning of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC). SWO first appeared in XiO 4.5 and SE in XiO 4.7. Twelve patients with NPC were selected and there were three plans for each patient: the common step-and-shoot IMRT plan (C-IMRT); S-IMRT was based on the result of C-IMRT and the plan was further optimized with SWO; F-IMRT was based on S-IMRT and the segments

A cholinergic link in the reflex release of vasopressin by hypotension in the rat.

Inhalation of amyl nitrite in the water-loaded rat under ethanol anaesthesia produced a brief fall of blood pressure followed by a prolonged antidiuretic response. The antidiuretic response to amyl nitrite was accompanied by increased urinary excretion of vasopressin, it was blocked by a specific vasopressin antagonist and by a barbiturate and it was absent in the Brattleboro rat with congenital diabetes insipidus. These results show that the antidiuretic response to the hypotension induced by amyl nitrite is due to the release of vasopressin and that this release is mediated by a neuroendocri

Short- and long-term results of microvascular anastomosis in the vertebrobasilar system, a critical analysis.

During the past five years, 22 patients were operated on and 21 occipital artery-caudal, loop-posterior, inferior cerebellar artery anastomoses were completed. All but one patient had suffered either TIAs of the vertebrobasilar system or brain stem stroke with complete or partial recovery. All the patients had significant atherosclerotic occlusive disease of both vertebral arteries and bilateral hypoplasia of the posterior communicating arteries. Three patients died shortly after surgery because of brain stem infarction and myocardial infarction. In one of these patients no anastomosis was per

Respiratory-related brain pulsations are increased in epilepsy-a two-centre functional MRI study.

Resting-state functional MRI has shown potential for detecting changes in cerebral blood oxygen level-dependent signal in patients with epilepsy, even in the absence of epileptiform activity. Furthermore, it has been suggested that coefficient of variation mapping of fast functional MRI signal may provide a powerful tool for the identification of intrinsic brain pulsations in neurological diseases such as dementia, stroke and epilepsy. In this study, we used fast functional MRI sequence (magnetic resonance encephalography) to acquire ten whole-brain images per second. We used the functional MR

From molecular biology to anti-aging cognitive-behavioral practices: the pioneering research of Walter Pierpaoli on the pineal and bone marrow foreshadows the contemporary revolution in stem cell and regenerative biology.

Evidence is accruing that a cognitive-behavioral regimen integrating cognitive techniques (meditation-based anti-stress, anti-inflammatory techniques, others), dietary modification ("dietary restriction" or modified dietary restriction), and certain forms of aerobic exercise, may prolong the healthy life span in humans. Recent research has identified some of the likely molecular mediators of these potentially broad-ranging, health-enhancing and anti-aging effects; these include DHEA, interleukins -10 and -4 (IL-10, 1L-4), and especially melatonin. Relatedly, what some are calling a revolution

Associations of plasma proteomics and age-related outcomes with brain age in a diverse cohort.

Machine learning models are increasingly being used to estimate "brain age" from neuroimaging data. The gap between chronological age and the estimated brain age gap (BAG) is potentially a measure of accelerated and resilient brain aging. Brain age calculated in this fashion has been shown to be associated with mortality, measures of physical function, health, and disease. Here, we estimate the BAG using a voxel-based elastic net regression approach, and then, we investigate its associations with mortality, cognitive status, and measures of health and disease in participants from Atheroscleros

Extracellular vesicles derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells alleviate neuroinflammation after diabetic intracerebral hemorrhage via the miR-183-5p/PDCD4/NLRP3 pathway.

OBJECTIVES: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) induced by diabetes results in further brain injury and nerve cell death. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) transplantation contributes to attenuating neurological deficits after ICH. This study investigated the mechanism of extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from BMSCs in reducing neuroinflammation after diabetic ICH. METHODS: BMSC-EVs were isolated and identified. The rat model of db/db-ICH was established and the model rats were administered with EVs. miR-183-5p expression in brain tissues of db/db-ICH rats was detected. The brain injury

Brain biopsy using high-field strength interventional magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Lesions within the brain are commonly sampled using stereotactic techniques. The advent of interventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) now allows neurosurgeons to interactively investigate specific regions, with exquisite observational detail. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of this new surgical approach. METHODS: Between January 1997 and June 1998, 35 brain biopsies were performed in a high-field strength interventional MRI unit. All biopsies were performed using MRI-compatible instrumentation. Interactive scanning was used to confirm accurate positioning of the biopsy ne

Evoked potentials in acute head injured patients with MRI-detected intracerebral lesions.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows precise detection of intracranial lesions in head injured patients. We compared intracranial lesions detected in MRI to somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) concerning their prognostic value. METHODS: Thirty patients with traumatic brain injury and prolonged recovery were studied. Size, side and number of 474 intra- and extraparenchymal lesions as well as lesion localisation based on a specific anatomical classification were entered into a database (a total of 7080 data). In addition, we recor

Osteopontin drives neuroinflammation and cell loss in MAPT-N279K frontotemporal dementia patient neurons.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is an incurable group of early-onset dementias that can be caused by the deposition of hyperphosphorylated tau in patient brains. However, the mechanisms leading to neurodegeneration remain largely unknown. Here, we combined single-cell analyses of FTD patient brains with a stem cell culture and transplantation model of FTD. We identified disease phenotypes in FTD neurons carrying the MAPT-N279K mutation, which were related to oxidative stress, oxidative phosphorylation, and neuroinflammation with an upregulation of the inflammation-associated protein osteopontin
