Observation of the efficacy of radiofrequency catheter ablation on patients with different forms of atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) in patients with different forms of atrial fibrillation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: By retrospective analysis, we summarize 720 cases, where patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation in our hospital were treated with RFCA from February 2010 to October 2014. Among the cases, 425 were diagnosed with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and 295 with non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (including persistent atrial fibrillation and permanent atrial fibrillation). All patients were followed up until June 2015 to compare an

[Port-catheter associated superior vena cava syndrome in a patient with rectum cancer].

History and clinical findings | A 59-year-old man with metastasized rectum cancer presents at the interdisciplinary emergency care unit with a distinct cyanosis of his face. At that moment the patient himself is out of any complaints. Cyanosis is spreading from his face over his neck to both arms. During the last months he has been treated with folinic acid, 5-fluoruracil, irinotecan and aflibercept via a port-catheter. Except for smoking his further medical history is unremarkable. Examinations | CT-scan shows a port-catheter associated thrombosis with a consecutive superior vena cava syndrom

[Recurrent Hiccups Caused by Malposition of the Peritoneal Catheter of a Lumboperitoneal Shunt: A Case Report].

A number of rare and unpredictable shunt-related complications after shunt placement to treat hydrocephalus have been described. Here a 78-year-old man who underwent lumboperitoneal (LP) shunt placement presented postoperatively with recurrent hiccups. Abdominal radiography and computed tomography performed at 7 days postoperative revealed that a peritoneal catheter had migrated into the upper abdominal cavity and contacted the diaphragm. The patient underwent LP shunt revision, during which the catheter was pulled back and repositioned within the lower abdominal cavity. The hiccups ceased com

A Missing Guide Wire After Placement of Peripherally Inserted Central Venous Catheter.

BACKGROUND Central venous catheterization is a common tool used in critically ill patients to monitor central venous pressure and administer fluids and medications such as vasopressors. Here we present a case of a missing guide wire after placement of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), which was incidentally picked up by bedside ultrasound in the intensive care unit.  CASE REPORT A 50-year-old Hispanic male was admitted to the intensive care unit for alcohol intoxication. He was managed for septic shock and required placement of a peripherally inserted central line in his left uppe

Timing of sequential use of double-balloon catheter and oral misoprostol for induction of labor.

AIM: The best time to commence cervical ripening with a balloon catheter is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether application of a balloon catheter in the morning or in the evening is better when sequential prostaglandin application is planned. METHODS: This multicenter historical cohort study included 415 women with an unfavorable cervix undergoing labor induction at term. Labor was induced with a double-balloon catheter and the sequential use of oral misoprostol if necessary. The balloon catheter was placed in the morning group between 02:00-15:00 and in the evening group b

Cerebrospinal Fluid-Cutaneous Fistula After Continuous Spinal Catheter in an Obstetric Patient.

A 23-year-old woman at 41 weeks and 6 days estimated gestational age underwent continuous spinal analgesia for labor after a recognized, unintended dural puncture. Excellent analgesia was maintained throughout labor and vaginal delivery, the intrathecal catheter was left in situ for 24 hours postpartum, and the catheter was subsequently removed without apparent complication. On physical examination during her anesthesia postoperative visit, clear fluid was noted to be slowly draining from the catheter insertion site. Although she denied all symptoms associated with a dural puncture, including

Gastric rupture following nasopharyngeal catheter oxygen delivery-a report of two cases.

Iatrogenic gastric distension and subsequent rupture following nasal or nasopharyngeal catheter oxygen delivery is a rare but life-threatening condition that requires urgent laparotomy. We report two cases recently encountered at our institution. Both patients exhibited symptoms of abdominal pain and distension following oxygen delivery involving a nasopharyngeal catheter during procedural sedation. Oxygen flow rates were 4 l/minute in both cases. The diagnosis was made by urgent imaging. Both patients survived following laparotomy and repair of gastric rupture. Seventeen cases have been repor

[Catheter based mitral valve repair for severe mitral regurgitation: patient selection].

The catheter-based mitral valve repair is a novel technology for the treatment of severe mitral regurgitation (MR). This technique is suitable for elderly patients with pronounced co-morbidities who are deemed to be high risk for conventional heart surgery. A meaningful reduction of mitral regurgitation leads to improvement of symptoms and quality of life. Studies also demonstrate reverse remodeling of the left ventricle. In heart failure patients with severe MR percutaneous repair reduces re-hospitalization rates>50% in comparison to optimal medical treatment. For degenerative MR conventional

Potential advantages of the GuideLiner® catheter: insights from optical coherence tomography.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been reported as promising not only for the evaluation of lesion morphology, but also for better clinical outcomes; however, in some cases with severe vessel tortuosity or angulated bifurcation, it is difficult to advance an intravascular imaging catheter. We report a case in which a GuideLiner® catheter facilitated obtaining better angiographic and OCT images with the sub-selective injection of minimal contrast medium, even in a case with a tortuous vessel or angulated bifurcation. Furthermore, OCT assessment of a vessel through the catheter may be other

Catheter-based or surgical repair of the highest risk secondary mitral regurgitation patients.

Surgical mitral valve repair (MVR) remains the standard of care for patients with severe valve incompetence with clear, proven benefit for patients with primary mitral regurgitation (MR). Secondary MR is a primary disease of the left ventricular (LV) myocardium. Up to 50% of patients develop secondary MR after an acute myocardial infarction (ischemic MR), with approximately 10% of these having severe MR. It is controversial as to whether surgical MVR is beneficial for these patients because valve repair or replacement does not correct the underlying disease. The increased perioperative risk du
