Spatially fixed patterns account for the spike and wave features in absence seizures.

Despite genetic, morphological and experimental in vivo, data implying fixed abnormalities in patients with absence seizures, attempts to find highly consistent features in the 3-Hz spike-and-wave pattern recorded during sequential seizures from the same subject have been largely unsuccessful. We used a new data decomposition technique called Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to separate multiple spike-and-wave episodes in the EEG recorded from five subjects with absence seizures into multiple consistent components. Each component corresponded to a temporally-independent waveform and a fixe

Cerebral function revealed by transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Although transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been introduced only recently, it is safe and provides a painless, inexpensive noninvasive method for the evaluation of brain function. Determining central motor conduction time (CMCT) permits assessment of the corticospinal pathways. Mapping the central representation of muscles provides a method for investigating the cortical reorganization that follows training, amputation and injury to the central nervous system. Such studies of human plasticity may have important implications for neurorehabilitation. TMS also provides a method whereby c

[The pathologic system].

The pathological system (PS) is a new pathological integration originating from the primary and secondary altered CNS structure, whose activity has a dysadaptive or direct pathogenic significance for the body. An important role in the formation of PS is played by hyperactive CNS structure which acquires the role of a pathological determinant. Disturbances in the inhibitory mechanisms of CNS structures involved in the PS and enhanced excitability of their neurons promote the formation of PS. Negative feedbacks in PS are ineffective due to the competence of inhibitory mechanisms in the determina

Investigation of the effect of PhTx2, from the venom of the spider Phoneutria nigriventer, on the release of [3H]-acetylcholine from rat cerebrocortical synaptosomes.

Venoms from spiders are an important source of toxins that can help on the dissection of mechanisms involved in neurotransmission. Among them is the venom of the spider Phoneutria nigriventer that contains several toxic fractions with different targets in mammals and/or insects. We here report that one of these fractions (PhTx2) is able to evoke acetylcholine release from rat cortical synaptosomes and that this effect is dependent on extracellular calcium and is inhibited by the sodium channel blocker tetrodotoxin.

Changes of presaccadic cortical activity when performing horizontal, visually guided saccades.

When a visually guided saccade task is running, the presaccadic potential obtained in the initial period of the task differs from those obtained later, while the subject's oculomotor performance remains unaffected. These time-related changes of cortical activity consist both of an overall decreasing electrical activity as well as a selective one over certain cortical areas. The generalised reduced activity already described in earlier studies is considered as an unspecified effect such as fatigue or decreased motivation. On the contrary, the pronounced selective changes of cortical activity ob

[Posterior cortical atrophy--a new dementia syndrome or a form of Alzheimer's disease?].

Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative disorder initially dominated by disturbances in higher visual functions including object agnosia, prosopagnosia, alexia, environmental agnosia and Balint's syndrome. Language, memory, insight, and judgement remain relatively preserved until late in the course. A characteristic neuroradiological finding consists of focal bilateral parieto-occipital atrophy demonstrated on MRI and CT. It was speculated that the possible underlying pathologic condition could be an atypical clinical variant of Alzheimer's disease, a lobar atrophy analogous to

Transient ictal cortical blindness during middle age. A case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of transient ictal cortical blindness in a 63-year-old woman. We reviewed the literature of all seizure-induced bilateral blindness. After careful evaluation of 44 cases, it was evident that the cases could be categorized into three groups with different etiologies, duration of blindness, and probable visual prognosis. Transient cortical blindness may occur with unilateral focal seizure or with bilateral seizure activity of the primary generalized type. Seizure-induced blindness may be ictal or postictal (Todd's) phenomenon or a permanent consequence following status epileptic

[Pick and focal brain atrophy].

In 1892 Arnold Pick presented the case of an elderly demented patient with severe aphasia and global brain atrophy most accentuated at the left temporal lobe. Picks main interest was the relationship between focally accentuated brain degeneration and focally accentuated neuropsychological deficits, and this was what he wanted to demonstrate. He made no effort to describe a new form of dementia. The term "Pick's disease" which was introduced 30 years later implies the existence of a nosological entity with characteristic clinical features, localisation and histology. The neuropathological cause

[MR imaging of a case of cerebral tuberculoma--correlation between MRI and histological findings].

A case of cerebral tuberculoma is reported with its representative MRI findings and the corresponding histological appearance. A 46-year-old female admitted to our hospital with complaint of left hemifacial seizure. CT scan discoled a slightly high density tumor (1.5cm in diameter) located in the right frontal lobe. This tumor was enhanced homogeneously by contrast media. While, MRI revealed three concentric layers within this tumor; the central core showed iso- and low signal intensity (SI) in T1- and T2-weighted imagings (T2WI), respectively. The middle layer showed low and high SI in T1- an

Neuropathologic study of resected cerebral tissue from patients with infantile spasms.

Studies to date on the neuropathologic substrates of infantile spasms have largely utilized autopsy material of children who die after a long and complicated seizure history. This makes the interpretation of primary versus secondary changes in the cerebral tissue difficult if not impossible. We have recently had the opportunity to review the neuropathologic changes in cortical tissue resected from infants and children with a history of infantile spasms. The major identifiable abnormalities were destructive lesions, sometimes classifiable as cystic-gliotic encephalomalacia, and dysplastic chang

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: focal symmetrical cortical involvement demonstrated by MR imaging.

The authors present two biopsy-proved cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. MR appears to be more sensitive than CT in detecting pathologic changes; signal abnormalities, when found, are predominantly within gray matter and may involve only peripheral cortex.

[The neuronal responses of the caudate nucleus in the cat to sensory stimulation].

Responses of caudate neurons to a large variety of visual and other sensory stimuli were studied in alert cats. Sharp drops in the spontaneous activity of the unknown origin and differences in the activity level were revealed in adjacent parts of the caudate nucleus. The following types of neurons were recorded: neurons responding to visual stimulation; neurons responding to somatic stimulation; neurons responding to combined visual-somatic stimulation. The best response was observed to moving visual stimuli that attracted the animal's attention, alimentary objects specifically. The caudate nu

Simulation of paleocortex performs hierarchical clustering.

Simulations were performed of layers I and II of olfactory paleocortex, as connected to its primary input structure, olfactory bulb. Induction of synaptic long-term potentiation by means of repetitive sampling of inputs caused the simulation to organize encodings of learned cues into a hierarchical memory that uncovered statistical relationships in the cue environment, corresponding to the performance of hierarchical clustering by the biological network. Simplification led to characterization of those parts of the network responsible for the mechanism, resulting in a novel, efficient algorithm

Motor-perceptual function in children with developmental reading disorders: neuropsychophysiological analysis.

The aim of this paper is to compare the motor performances and the movement-related macropotentials of 8 male children aged 10 years with developmental reading disorders with those of 9 nondisabled male children of the same age. The task employed consisted of initiating the sweep of an oscilloscope with a self-paced movement and terminating it within 50 +/- 10 msec. The children with reading disorders were slower, less accurate, and achieved a smaller number of target performances. Their brain macropotentials associated with motor programming, processing of sensory information, and evaluation

Postresuscitation disease.

The postresuscitation disease is a specific pathophysiologic state of vital organ systems early after ischemic anoxia. This report summarizes reviews of past research and makes suggestions for future research concerning revival of the cerebral cortex after clinical death, CNS stimulation vs. sedation, postischemic coma and pain, near-death experiences, and extracerebral derangements. The stages of resuscitation when the CNS should be stimulated and those when it is preferable to depress the activity of not fully recovered higher centers remain to be clarified. Future research in reanimatology

A single dose of FG 7142 causes long-term increases in mouse cortical beta-adrenoceptors.

There is evidence that central monoamines are involved in the actions of benzodiazepines. We have investigated the effects of a single dose of the benzodiazepine partial inverse agonist, FG 7142, on radioligand binding to alpha 2- and beta-adrenoceptors in mouse cerebral cortex. We found that seven days after a single injection of FG 7142 there was a large increase in the density of beta-adrenoceptors. This rise was not detectable either 15-30 min, or 24 h after the injection and no statistically significant changes in alpha 2-adrenoceptor binding were found at any of these times. Administrati
