Intraoral Factors Modulating Pain in Burning Mouth Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Understanding intraoral factors that modulate pain in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) could provide insight into its pathophysiological mechanisms, facilitating improved management strategies. METHODS: This retrospective study included 120 BMS patients who were asked, without predefined options, about factors that alleviated or exacerbated their pain. Data collected included pain characteristics (intensity, localisation, duration) and associated conditions such as salivary abnormalities and taste disturbances. RESULTS: A total of 89.2% of patients reported that intraor

Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: An Evidence-Based Practical Review.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of gut-brain interaction characterized by recurrent abdominal pain associated with a change in the frequency and/or form of stools. Approximately one in three patients with quiescent inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), defined as the absence of endoscopic evidence of active inflammation, experience IBS-type symptoms. These symptoms are associated with reduced quality of life and increased psychological burden, and can complicate clinical assessment by mimicking conditions such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, bile acid malabsorption, or post-

Nutrient drivers and ecological restoration modulate greenhouse gas emissions from contrasting urban rivers.

Urban rivers play a critical role in regional carbon cycling, yet their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are shaped by interactions between ecological restoration and urban pollution. Despite increasing attention, knowledge gaps remain regarding how nutrient variations and ecological restoration affect spatiotemporal dynamics of GHG fluxes in urban waterways. This study addressed this by comparing two representative urban rivers: an ecologically restored river (QSG) and a treated wastewater-receiving polluted river (XSH). Field sampling was carried out across multiple seasons, and CO2 (carbon di

Left Coronary Artery-Right Ventricle Fistula Case Report: Optimal Treatment Decision.

Coronary artery fistulas (CAFs) are rare congenital anomalies, presenting in 0.05-0.9% of cases, characterized by an aberrant connection between a coronary artery and a cardiac chamber or great vessel. Clinical manifestations can include heart failure, myocardial ischemia due to coronary steal, arrhythmias, or infective endocarditis. We report a case of a 39-year-old man initially evaluated in 2016 for peripheral edema and suspected right ventricular (RV) abnormality. Earlier assessments indicated a left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery-RV fistula, but initial catheterization was nond

Pharmacological Management of Psoriasis: Current Landscape and Future Perspectives.

Psoriasis is a relapsing, chronic, and inflammatory disease of the skin. However, its impact goes beyond just pathophysiology and takes a toll on the physical and psychological aspects of the health of the afflicted, lowering the quality of life significantly. It is also a mechanistically complex disease with a substantial immune component. Therefore, ongoing treatment strategies focus on targeting at least one immune component associated with the disease development and progression by employing biological agents like IL-1 inhibitors, IL-23 inhibitors, IL-36 inhibitors, and TNF-α inhibitors. Twisting in the abdomen and pelvis: a review of organ torsions.

Torsion of abdominal and pelvic organs, such as the spleen, gallbladder, omentum, epiploic appendages, fallopian tube, and epididymis/testicular appendix are relatively rare, and yet clinically significant, often imitating more common causes of acute pain. Given the nonspecific presentation and limited value of laboratory tests, imaging drives early recognition and timely, organ-preserving management. This review consolidates pathophysiology, modality-specific appearances, and practical diagnostic strategies for uncommon non-intestinal torsions. The unifying mechanism is rotation around a mese

Role of orthobiologics in managing patellar tendinopathy: A narrative review.

UNLABELLED: Patellar tendinopathy is a relatively common cause of anterior knee pain in athletes. It is predominantly seen in sports involving jumping, running, abrupt change in direction like basketball, volleyball, soccer, sprinting and jumping. The main pathophysiology is considered to be repetitive microtrauma at the inferior pole of patella along with a poor healing response. Although eccentric exercises have shown to be beneficial, the improvement is often slow and may result in a less than satisfactory outcome. There is a growing interest of orthobiologics, mainly platelet-rich plasma (

Living with pain and Parkinson's developing an understanding of the impact, trajectory and pain management needs: a qualitative interview study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Pain is reported as one of the most troubling symptoms for people with Parkinson's (PwP); however, the literature exploring their lived experience of pain and how to manage it is limited. Pain affects PwP at all stages of their condition and can fluctuate and change over time. Therefore, it is pertinent to speak to PwP to understand their experiences of pain to inform the development of tailored behavioural interventions to manage pain. How pain interacts with other Parkinson's symptoms lacks consensus. Gaining a better understanding of this from the perspective of PwP is importa

Evaluation of a Moisturizing Cream with 20% Urea for Keratosis Pilaris.

Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a benign dermatosis consisting of folliculocentric keratotic papules or pustules with surrounding erythema, often on proximal extensor surfaces of extremities. Management strategies for KP largely center on moisturization and exfoliation. Urea, a well-established ingredient in topical skincare, is a component of the natural moisturizing factors with concentration-dependent humectant, emollient, and exfoliative properties.  Given the overlap of urea’s properties and management goals of KP, a 4-week, open-label, noncomparative clinical study was conducted to

To biopsy or not to biopsy a teenager with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome? Biopsy first.

Kidney biopsy plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of several glomerular diseases. While it is generally considered a routine and safe procedure in children, it should be conducted with the primary objective of addressing the following question: do the prognosis and treatments vary based on the findings of kidney biopsy? In children presenting with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS), guidelines suggest to consider kidney biopsy for individuals older than 12 years, primarily due to the possible increased incidence of different glomerulonephritis compared to younger patients, wh

Renal Pelvis Urine Sampling in Patients with Obstructed, Infected Ureterolithiasis: A Retrospective Quality Improvement Initiative.

Purpose: Patients who present with urinary tract infections secondary to obstructing stones occasionally fail to improve on treatment based on midstream urine culture (MUSCx). Varying microbiomes between the bladder and the renal pelvis may account for this. In this study, we sought to investigate the utility of obtaining a renal pelvis urine culture (RPUCx) at the time of stenting to guide antibiotic treatment prior to definitive stone operation. Materials and Methods: RPUCx was obtained in 257 patients presenting with obstructive ureteral stones undergoing emergent stenting. Concordance rate

Assessing coastal bathymetry and climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems using Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery.

Coastal ecosystems are facing heightened risks due to human-induced climate change, including rising water levels and intensified storm events. Accurate bathymetry data is crucial for assessing the impacts of these threats. Traditional data collection methods can be cost-prohibitive. This study investigates the feasibility of using freely accessible Landsat and Sentinel satellite imagery to estimate bathymetry and its correlation with hydrographic chart soundings in Port Klang, Malaysia. Through analysis of the blue and green spectral bands from the Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2 datasets, a bathyme
