Reconsidering the role of imagery in perception.

How much of what we see is imagined? Perception is a constructive process, supplementing the information available in sensory inputs to build representations of the world, as when one perceives a cat behind a chain-link fence as a whole, intact object, though it produces only a fragmented image on the eye. A recent movement in cognitive science and the philosophy of mind argues that mental imagery supplies much of the material for constructing perceptual representations-filling in the missing parts of the cat, for instance. On this "Constitutive View" of imagery's role in perception, perceptua

The influence of psychological ownership on pride in a Citizen Science project on wildlife ecology.

Voluntary engagement is crucial for committed participation in Citizen Science (CS) projects. So far, the CS literature has argued that psychological ownership (i.e., subjective feelings of owning or possessing an object or entity) facilitates engagement in CS projects and is beneficial for several outcomes, such as attitudes toward CS. This paper argues that, as ownership is a self-relevant experience and facilitates effort and engagement, it should increase self-focused outcomes, such as the self-conscious emotion of pride. This is highly relevant for the CS context due to its voluntary char

I Have a Claw! Impact of Embodying a Biomimetic Avatar on Self-Perception and Task Performance in Virtual Reality.

Embodied representations are known to influence user behavior in virtual environments through stereotypes associated with their appearance, a phenomenon known as the Proteus effect, or through perceived affordances. The latter concept refers to the suggested ways of interacting with the environment as perceived by the capabilities of the user's virtual representation. The inherent ability of virtual reality to support non-anthropomorphic avatars, enabling new interaction modalities, paves the way for a deeper understanding of affordances in virtual environments. We designed an experiment to as

A Neuro-Inspired Rate-Encoded Descriptor for High-Speed Asynchronous Robotic Vision.

This paper presents the Post-Stimulus Time-Dependent Event Descriptor (P-TED), a novel "pure event" feature descriptor designed for neuromorphic vision data. Unlike conventional frame-based approaches or hybrid methods that transform event data into intermediate representations, P-TED operates directly on asynchronous event streams, thereby preserving the intrinsic low-latency and high-temporal-resolution advantages of event-based sensors. The descriptor integrates two complementary feature sets: a motion feature vector, which aggregates spatial relationships within a Moore neighbourhood to qu

Dibenzofuran-Modulated Narrowband Red MR-TADF Emitters for BT.2020 OLEDs With Ultralow Roll-Off and Long Lifetime.

Achieving high efficiency, long operational stability, and narrowband pure-red emission through rational molecular design remains a critical challenge for next-generation ultrahigh-definition displays. Here, we present an integrated materials-to-device strategy enabling narrowband, high-efficiency red multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with suppressed roll-off and extended operational lifetime. Three boron-nitrogen-oxygen (BNO)-fused emitters-4BPBNO, 3DBFBNO, and 2DBFBNO-were rationally designed by modulating multi-resonance

Magneto-Electrodeposition and Field-Enhanced Ion Transport in Zn-MnO2 Batteries.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising alternatives to lithium-ion systems for safe and low-cost energy storage; however, their practical application is limited by poor cyclability, cathode degradation, and sluggish kinetics. Here, we introduce a magnetic-field-assisted electrodeposition strategy, termed magneto-electrodeposition (MED), to fabricate MnO2 cathodes. The applied magnetic field induces Lorentz-force-driven magnetohydrodynamics, enhancing Mn2+ ion transport and enabling the formation of uniform and robust MnO2 coatings with enhanced δ-MnO2 character. Structural analyses c

Outlier Detection in Functional Data Using Adjusted Outlyingness.

In signal processing and information analysis, the detection and identification of anomalies present in signals constitute a critical research focus. Accurately discerning these deviations using probabilistic, statistical, and information-theoretic methods is essential for ensuring data integrity and supporting reliable downstream analysis. Outlier detection in functional data aims to identify curves or trajectories that deviate significantly from the dominant pattern-a process vital for data cleaning and the discovery of anomalous events. This task is challenging due to the intrinsic infinite

Reconstruction of spin structures from topological charge distributions via generative neural network systems.

Localized topological defects inherently possess a multiscale character. While their microstructure configuration depends on the specific physical system, their topological features and mutual interactions can be described on the macroscale in terms of a particle representation. However, determining the physical properties associated with a given defect pattern often requires knowledge of the underlying microscopic structure. In this study, we extend a Wasserstein generative adversarial neural network by incorporating physical constraints and Fourier-space information to generate microscopic s

A dual-key fluorogenic probe for DNA and proteins imaging via excimer disaggregation and viscosity-activated molecular rotor.

Fluorescence imaging is pivotal for elucidating biomolecular dynamics, yet the development of probes enabling specific and high-contrast imaging of multiple targets remains challenging. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel cyanovinylene-based fluorogenic probe, CV-N3, which synergistically integrates a dual-response mechanism combining excimer disaggregation with a viscosity-activated molecular rotor. The excimer formation and its CuAAC induced disaggregation are directly supported by dynamic light scattering and time-resolved fluorescence lifetime measurements. The probe enables specif

Hierarchical Micro-Mesoporous ZnO-SiO2/Carbon Composites: Synthesis, Structural Characterisation, and High-Capacity Adsorption of Cationic Organic Pollutants from Water.

Hierarchical ZnO-SiO2/carbon composites (C-Zn1, C-Zn2, C-Zn3) were synthesised via the carbonisation of resorcinol-formaldehyde gels in the presence of ZnO-modified fumed silica, and characterised by N2 adsorption-desorption, FTIR, XRD, SEM, and zeta potential analysis. The composites exhibited hierarchical micro-mesoporous structures with BET surface areas of 467-499 m2 g-1; the non-microporous volume fraction increased from 0.09 (reference carbon RFC, 545 m2 g-1) to 0.54-0.63 upon ZnO-SiO2 incorporation. Structural Mechanism and Cellular Restriction of Tau Seeding from Endolysosomes.

The prion-like spread of tau from cell to cell in the central nervous system involves escape from the endolysosomal network, which is counteracted by the lysosomal repair activity of the ESCRT system. Here, we investigate whether other components of the lysosomal damage sensing and repair system, namely the ESCRT-recruiting Ca 2+ sensor ALG-2, conjugation of ATG8s to single membranes (CASM), the phosphoinositide-initiated tethering and lipid transport (PITT) pathway, and the Parkinson's disease-related lipid transporter VPS13C are involved in tau spread. We found that the PITT pathway and VPS1

Narrative pedagogies in cranial nerve anatomy: Comparing mythological and sports-based approaches with traditional teaching.

This study used a mixed methods randomized controlled experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of narrative-based versus traditional pedagogy in teaching cranial nerve anatomy to medicine students. Eighty-eight students who had completed a previous course on the nervous system were randomized into three groups: a control group receiving standard theoretical and practical anatomy instruction, a group using a mythological narrative ("Supper of Gods"), and a group using an animated sports-themed narrative ("Head Coach Hypoglossus"). Knowledge acquisition was assessed using pre- and post-

Type-1 inflammatory imprinting and programmed responsiveness to CD40L enhance Siglec-1-dependent HIV-1 trans-infection by dendritic cells.

Dendritic cells (DC) play a central role in host immunity as they carry environmental cues from sites of infection to the lymphatics, where they subsequently direct appropriate adaptive immune responses. Importantly, this process is exploited by pathogens such as HIV-1, which utilize DC to efficiently facilitate HIV-1 trans-infection of CD4+ T cells. In this study, we show that monocyte-derived DC matured under type-1 proinflammatory conditions, either through exposure to soluble mediators of type-1 immunity or through bystander activation of cytotoxic T cells, display enhanced trans-infection

Enhancing diabetic retinopathy query responses: assessing large language model in ophthalmology.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness, with an increasing reliance on large language models (LLMs) for health-related information. The specificity of LLM-generated responses to DR queries is yet to be established, prompting an investigation into their suitability for ophthalmological contexts. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving six LLMs was conducted to ascertain the accuracy and comprehensiveness of responses to 42 DR-related questions from 1 February 2024 to 31 March 2024. Three consultant-level ophthalmologists independently assessed the responses, g

Enhancing Reverse Intersystem Crossing in TSCT-TADF Emitters: Heavy Atom Modulation of Multiresonance Acceptors.

With the rapid development of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials, achieving efficient reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) to mitigate triplet-triplet annihilation has emerged as a prominent research focus. This study investigates five derivative molecules, featuring varied bridging atoms/groups (O, S, Se, -CH2-), designed from the reported TADF molecule AC-BO with through-space charge transfer (TSCT) properties. Utilizing time-dependent density functional theory coupled with a PCM solution model, their excited state behaviors were simulated in a toluene environment. Inte

Dynamics of vibrationally coupled intersystem crossing in state-of-the-art organic optoelectronic materials.

This work investigates intersystem crossing (ISC) induced by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in state-of-the-art non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). A quantum chemistry study analyzed SOC in 10 NFAs using the optimized geometry of the ground state (OGGS), revealing the importance of excited-state character (local or charge transfer) in determining SOC. However, ISC rates calculated with Marcus formalism were significantly lower than experimental values, showing that the three-state model (S1, T1, and T2) is insufficient. A simplified method to calculate coupled probabilities was proposed, leveraging a q

Infrared Spectra of UFn (n = 1-4) in Solid Ne and Ar Matrices: Symmetry-Breaking D2d Structure of UF4.

This study addresses two persistent challenges in uranium fluoride chemistry: resolving decades-long spectral assignment conflicts across UF2, UF3, and UF4 species, and conclusively settling the symmetry controversy of UF4. By the cryogenic matrix isolation IR spectroscopy technique in combination with relativistic quantum chemical calculations, we experimentally tracked the stepwise formation of UF to UF6 in neon and argon matrices. Theoretical validation has led to a reassignment of the infrared absorption bands for UF2, UF3, and UF4, defining their molecular geometries. While UF2 exhibits a

Challenging diagnosis in pulmonary nut carcinoma: A report of two cases with different histopathologic and molecular features and a novel NUTM1::SPECC1 gene fusion.

BACKGROUND: NUT carcinoma (NC), formerly known as NUT midline carcinoma, is a rare but highly aggressive cancer. It is a poorly differentiated carcinoma characterized by rearrangements of the NUTM1 (nuclear protein in Testis) gene with a member of the bromodomain-containing protein (BRD) family gene, usually BRD4. There is limited knowledge about primary pulmonary NC till now. It is probably underestimated or underdiagnosed because of its poorly differentiated character, misleading immunophenotype, and wide range of differential diagnoses. METHOD: We report here two cases of pulmonary NC with
