A prospective study of diabetes, lifestyle factors, and glaucoma among African-American women.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association of self-reported type 2 diabetes, anthropometric factors, alcohol consumption, and cigarette smoking with risk of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in a prospective cohort study of African-American women. METHODS: From 1995 through 2007, 32,570 Black Women's Health Study participants aged 21 to 69 years at baseline were followed for incident POAG. Questionnaires were mailed biennially to update exposures and identify incident cases of POAG. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were derived from Cox regression models. RESULTS: D

Effects of tobacco smoking on cancer and cardiovascular disease in urban black South Africans.

Demographic and lifestyle information from 9690 black patients diagnosed with cancer or cardiovascular disease was collected in an ongoing case-control study in Johannesburg, South Africa. Compared to never smokers, the odds ratio (OR) for lung cancer among current smokers was 16.3 (95% confidence interval (CI), 9.6-27.6) for men and 6.4 (95% CI, 4.0-10.4) for women. The corresponding OR for other smoking-related cancers was 4.6 (95% CI, 3.7-5.7) among men and 1.9 (95% CI, 1.6-2.2) among women, and for cardiovascular disease, 3.4 (95% CI, 2.1-5.4) among men and 1.5 (95% CI, 1.1-2.1) among wome

[An overview of tobacco use in France: Observed trends and new challenges].

This article reports changes in tobacco and vaping consumption in France over the last thirty years and the issues they raise for public authorities in terms of prevention and management of the social and health consequences. This report is the result of a joint analysis by Santé publique France (SpF) and the French Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (OFDT). It shows that there has been a “generational shift” in tobacco consumption and social representations of cigarettes since the mid-2010s, with a sharp decline in tobacco initiation among adolescents, which has become less common

Selective Uptake of Third-Hand Tobacco Smoke Components to Inorganic and Organic Aerosol Particles.

Third-hand smoke (THS) is an emerging route of exposure to tobacco smoke in the indoor environment. Few studies have investigated the chemical behavior of THS, although initial findings suggest that semivolatile components of THS can partition to indoor aerosol. By exposing single-component particles to THS in an environmental chamber, this study demonstrates a pronounced dependence of THS uptake on aerosol composition. First, it was found that primarily reduced nitrogen compounds (that produced C xH yN z+ ion signal) in THS partitioned strongly to acidic ammoniated sulfate particles, whereas

Effect of Alcohol and Tobacco Smoke on Long-Term Memory and Cell Proliferation in the Hippocampus of Rats.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol is frequently used in combination with tobacco and few studies explore interactions between these two drugs of abuse. Here, we evaluated the effect of chronic alcohol administration and concomitant exposure to tobacco smoke on long-term memory and on cell proliferation in the hippocampus of rats. METHODS: Forty male Wistar rats were assigned to four groups and treated with alcohol (2g/kg by gavage) and/or exposed to tobacco smoke (from six cigarettes, by inhalation) twice a day (at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM) for 30 days. Long-term memory was evaluated in the inhibitory avoidan

Carbon monoxide prevents hypertension and proteinuria in an adenovirus sFlt-1 preeclampsia-like mouse model.

Preeclampsia (PE) remains a leading cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Smoking cigarettes is associated with a decreased incidence of PE. Based on this observation and previous work, we hypothesize that women who smoke have a lower risk of developing PE because of elevated levels of carbon monoxide (CO) in their blood. The objective of this study was to determine if low-dose CO in ambient air could attenuate the late pregnancy hypertension (HTN) and proteinuria in the Adenovirus (Ad) sFlt-1 PE-like mouse model. Continuous low-dose CO treatment (250 ppm) was start

What do persons with mental illnesses need to quit smoking? Mental health consumer and provider perspectives.

OBJECTIVES: Forty-one percent (41%) of persons in the U.S. who reported having recent mental illnesses also smoke cigarettes. Tobacco use among this population is associated with up to 25 less years of life and excess medical comorbidity compared to the general population. While research demonstrates that tobacco interventions can be effective for persons with mental illnesses, they are not commonly utilized in clinical practice. The current study explored how to adapt evidence-based tobacco cessation interventions to meet the unique physiological, psychological, and social challenges facing p

The role of cortisol suppression on craving for and satisfaction from nicotine in high and low impulsive subjects.

The rewarding properties of drug self-administration have been shown to depend on mesolimbic dopamine release but also on the availability of corticosterone, as shown in rats. Since this became particularly evident when tested in rat strains bred for high (HR) and low (LR) reactivity to novel stimuli, the role of cortisol and personality in drug craving was investigated in 60 male nicotine-deprived smokers divided according to questionnaire scores into high and low impulsives, a dimension considered to represent HR/LR rats. They either received the peripheral cortisol blocker metyrapone (MET)

A Retrospective Risk-Factor Analysis of Patients Presenting With Peripheral Vascular Disease in a Tertiary Care Hospital in North-East India.

Background Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) encompasses both upper and lower limb diseases affecting veins and arteries. This study focuses on peripheral arterial disease (PAD) due to its higher morbidity and mortality rates related to cardiovascular deaths. Research is crucial to assess the prevalence, risk factors, and burden of PVD in the Indian population. There is a significant lack of data on PVD in the northeastern region of India; therefore, this study aims to examine the risk factors for PVD in patients attending a tertiary care hospital in Northeast India. Methods This hospital-base

Influence of TNFalpha and LTalpha single nucleotide polymorphisms on susceptibility to and prognosis in cutaneous malignant melanoma in the British population.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial disease affects the lower limb and is associated with diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking and obesity. It increases the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. It can be symptomatic causing intermittent claudication, but often there are few clinical signs. Podiatrists are able to detect the presence of peripheral arterial disease as part of their lower limb assessment and are well placed to give advice on lifestyle changes to help reduce disease progression. This is important to improve health outcomes and is offered as a prevention/public health interve

The association between tobacco use and COVID-19 in Qatar.

The effects of smoking on COVID-19 are controversial. Some studies show no link between smoking and severe COVID-19, whereas others demonstrate a significant link. This cross-sectional study aims to determine the prevalence of tobacco use among COVID-19 patients, examine the relationship between tobacco use and hospitalized COVID-19 (non-severe and severe), and quantify its risk factors. A random sample of 7430 COVID-19 patients diagnosed between 27 February-30 May 2020 in Qatar were recruited over the telephone to complete an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The prevalence of tobacco s

Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Oral Health Among Women in the United States: Findings From the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

It is well established that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) negatively impact physical and mental health. There is a paucity of research examining the impact of ACEs on oral health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to better understand how ACEs may impact oral health utilizing a nationally representative sample of females. Data from the 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) were utilized. The sample comprised 36,249 females. Chi-square tests were used to examine associations between multiple forms of ACEs and oral health, mental health, smoking, and health-related qu

Influence of smoking habits on acute outcome of revascularization of chronic total occlusion.

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for chronic total occlusion (CTO) remains a major challenge in interventional cardiology. The exact toxic components of cigarette smoke and the mechanisms involved in smoking-related cardiovascular dysfunction are largely unknown, but it increases inflammation, thrombosis, and oxidation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. There is only insignificant knowledge reported in the literature about the influence of smoking habits on acute outcome in CTO PCI. METHODS: Between 2012 and 2017, a total of 559 patients were included in the study. The

Sex-Related Cochlear Impairment in Cigarette Smokers.

BACKGROUND A number of studies have documented the influence of cigarette smoking on hearing. However, the association between sex and hearing impairment in smokers as measured by otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) has not been clearly established. The aim of this study was to analyze sex-specific effects of smoking on hearing via conventional and ultra-high-frequency pure tone audiometry (PTA), and OAEs, specifically spontaneous OAEs, click-evoked OAEs, and distortion-product OAEs. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 84 healthy volunteers aged 25-45 years (mean 34), among them 46 women (25 non-

Regional cerebral blood flow in opiate dependence relates to substance use and neuropsychological performance.

Neuroimaging of opiate-dependent individuals indicates both altered brain structure and function. Magnetic resonance-based arterial spin labeling has been used to measure noninvasively cerebral blood flow (i.e. perfusion) in alcohol, tobacco and stimulant dependence; only one arterial spin labeling paper in opiate-dependent individuals demonstrated frontal and parietal perfusion deficits. Additional research on regional brain perfusion in opiate dependence and its relationship to cognition and self-regulation (impulsivity, risk taking and decision making) may inform treatment approaches for op
