Gene expression profiling of primary breast carcinomas using arrays of candidate genes.

Breast cancer is characterized by an important histoclinical heterogeneity that currently hampers the selection of the most appropriate treatment for each case. This problem could be solved by the identification of new parameters that better predict the natural history of the disease and its sensitivity to treatment. A large-scale molecular characterization of breast cancer could help in this context. Using cDNA arrays, we studied the quantitative mRNA expression levels of 176 candidate genes in 34 primary breast carcinomas along three directions: comparison of tumor samples, correlations of m

Forecasting generalized epileptic seizures from the EEG signal by wavelet analysis and dynamic unsupervised fuzzy clustering.

Dynamic state recognition and event-prediction are fundamental tasks in biomedical signal processing. We present a new, electroencephalogram (EEG)-based, brain-state identification method which could form the basis for forecasting a generalized epileptic seizure. The method relies on the existence in the EEG of a preseizure state, with extractable unique features, a priori undefined. We exposed 25 rats to hyperbaric oxygen until the appearance of a generalized EEG seizure. EEG segments from the preexposure, early exposure, and the period up to and including the seizure were processed by the fa

Digital signal processing chip implementation for detection and analysis of intracardiac electrograms.

The adoption of digital signal processing (DSP) microchips for detection and analysis of electrocardiographic signals offers a means for increased computational speed and the opportunity for design of customized architecture to address real-time requirements. A system using the Motorola 56001 DSP chip has been designed to realize cycle-by-cycle detection (triggering) and waveform analysis using a time-domain template matching technique, correlation waveform analysis (CWA). The system digitally samples an electrocardiographic signal at 1000 Hz, incorporates an adaptive trigger for detection of

Cases of alleged asbestos-related disease: a radiologic re-evaluation.

Chest radiographs were re-evaluated from 439 active and retired tireworkers previously designated as having a condition consistent with an asbestiform mineral exposure. The review was performed in an independent manner by three board-certified radiologists according to guidelines from an international classification system. The percentage of cases with abnormalities consistent with an asbestiform mineral exposure found separately by the three radiologists was 3.7, 3.0, and 2.7%. Application of an algorithm to form a consensus evaluation indicated that approximately 3.6% (16) of the subjects ev

ViT-MAENB7: An innovative breast cancer diagnosis model from 3D mammograms using advanced segmentation and classification process.

Tumors are an important health concern in modern times. Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent causes of death for women. Breast cancer is rapidly becoming the leading cause of mortality among women globally. Early detection of breast cancer allows patients to obtain appropriate therapy, increasing their probability of survival. The adoption of 3-Dimensional (3D) mammography for the medical identification of abnormalities in the breast reduced the number of deaths dramatically. Classification and accurate detection of lumps in the breast in 3D mammography is especially difficult due to fac

Federated Privacy-Preserving Multi-Modal Deep Learning for Breast Cancer Diagnosis: A Physics-Aware Approach.

Background/Objectives: Breast cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide. This study presents a systematically justified multi-modal breast cancer classification pipeline that combines established, physically motivated preprocessing operations, modality-specific deep learning models, late-fusion inference, and a deployment-aware federated learning evaluation. Rather than introducing new image restoration or federated optimization algorithms, this work formalizes how standard preprocessing methods can be organized according to the dominant degradation chara

Single-Cell and Bulk RNA-Seq Profiling Identifies Cell Adhesion-Related Gene Signatures in Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) involves complex secondary damage mechanisms, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and blood-brain barrier disruption, in which cell adhesion-related genes play a central role. Therefore, systematically elucidating the expression and regulation of cell adhesion-related genes (CARGs) is crucial for identifying new therapeutic targets to mitigate inflammatory infiltration and preserve barrier integrity. Both single-cell and bulk transcriptomic data were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. The single-cell data were processed using S

Identifying JAK2 and ANXA5 as Key Genes Linking Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Oxidative Stress via Machine Learning and Multilayer Transcriptomic Integration With Functional Validation.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common and severe sleep disorder closely associated with oxidative stress (OS). This study aims to identify and validate potential OS-related genes associated with OSA through bioinformatics methods. We successfully identified OS-related differentially expressed genes (OS-DEGs) by combining the limma test, weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA), and OS-related genes from the GeneCards database. Key genes and potential biological roles were further identified using Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), enrichment analysi

Radiomic Features of Mesorectal Fat as Indicators of Response in Rectal Cancer Patients Undergoing Neoadjuvant Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Rectal cancer represents a major cause of mortality in the United States. Management strategies are highly individualized, depending on patient-specific factors and tumor characteristics. The therapeutic landscape is rapidly evolving, with notable advancements in response rates to both radiotherapy and chemotherapy. For locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC, defined as up to T3-4 N+), the standard of care involves total mesorectal excision (TME) following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as the gold standard for local tumor staging a

Development and validation of prediction models for gestational diabetes treatment modality using supervised machine learning: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes (GDM) is prevalent and benefits from timely and effective treatment, given the short window to impact glycemic control. Clinicians face major barriers to choosing effectively among treatment modalities [medical nutrition therapy (MNT) with or without pharmacologic treatment (antidiabetic oral agents and/or insulin)]. We investigated whether clinical data at varied stages of pregnancy can predict GDM treatment modality. METHODS: Among a population-based cohort of 30,474 pregnancies with GDM delivered at Kaiser Permanente Northern California in 2007-2017, we sel

An adaptive probabilistic atlas for anomalous brain segmentation in MR images.

PURPOSE: Automated segmentation of brain structures (objects) in MR three-dimensional (3D) images for quantitative analysis has been a challenge and probabilistic atlases (PAs) are among the most well-succeeded approaches. However, the existing models do not adapt to possible object anomalies due to the presence of a disease or a surgical procedure. Post-processing operation does not solve the problem, for example, tissue classification to detect and remove such anomalies inside the resulting segmentation mask, because segmentation errors on healthy tissues cannot be fixed. Such anomalies very

Evolutionary-driven support vector machines for determining the degree of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C.

OBJECTIVE: Hepatic fibrosis, the principal pointer to the development of a liver disease within chronic hepatitis C, can be measured through several stages. The correct evaluation of its degree, based on recent different non-invasive procedures, is of current major concern. The latest methodology for assessing it is the Fibroscan and the effect of its employment is impressive. However, the complex interaction between its stiffness indicator and the other biochemical and clinical examinations towards a respective degree of liver fibrosis is hard to be manually discovered. In this respect, the n

[New developments in grading of astrocytomas, IDH-mutant: Study of the impact of update 12 of cIMPACT-NOW].

INTRODUCTION: The 2021 World Health Organisation (WHO) classification of the Central Nervous System tumors introduced, for the first time, a molecular biomarker (homozygous deletion of CDKN2A/B) into the grading of astrocytomas, IDH-mutant. Since then, the cIMPACT-NOW expert group has proposed a new prognostic algorithm (published in the update 12), incorporating epigenetic and genetic data. The aim of this study was to report on the experience of integrating this algorithm into the grading of astrocytomas, IDH-mutant diagnosed in routine practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included a
