A Whole MED12 Gene Deletion in a Female Fetus With Features Encountered in Hardikar Syndrome.

Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MS-MLPA), and trio-whole exome sequencing (WES) were performed in a female fetus with omphalocele. A de novo heterozygous 300-kb deletion in the Xq13.1 region, which includes the MED12 gene, was identified. Follow-up ultrasound at 18+4 weeks of gestation revealed features consistent with Hardikar syndrome (HS), including a right-sided cleft lip and palate, an omphalocele with intestines, a diaphragmatic hernia with the stomach in the left thoracic cavity, and displacement of the heart

Trisomy 13 With Bilateral Congenital Anophthalmia: A Case Report.

Trisomy 13, also known as Patau syndrome, is a widely congenital anomaly syndrome characterized by microphthalmia, cleft lip, and palate, microcephaly with a sloping forehead, congenital heart disease, and polydactyly of the limbs. Patau syndrome is identified either prenatally or postnatally. Its survival rate is low, and most of the patients die even before their first year of life. The risk of trisomy 13 is higher in women of advanced maternal age. Brain and cardiovascular abnormalities are typically the primary factors contributing to the syndrome's poor prognosis. We report a case of a ma

A novel MEIS2 mutation explains the complex phenotype in a boy with a typical NF1 microdeletion syndrome.

Concurrence of distinct genetic conditions in the same patient is not rare. Several cases involving neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) have recently been reported, indicating the need for more extensive molecular analysis when phenotypic features cannot be explained by a single gene mutation. Here, we describe the clinical presentation of a boy with a typical NF1 microdeletion syndrome complicated by cleft palate and other dysmorphic features, hypoplasia of corpus callosum, and partial bicoronal craniosynostosis caused by a novel 2bp deletion in exon 2 of Meis homeobox 2 gene (MEIS2) inherited fro

Associations Between Disinfection By-Product Exposures and Craniofacial Birth Defects.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine associations between craniofacial birth defects (CFDs) and disinfection by-product (DBP) exposures, including the sum of four trihalomethanes (THM4) and five haloacetic acids (HAA5) (ie, DBP9). METHODS: We calculated first trimester adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for different DBPs in a matched case-control study of 366 CFD cases in Massachusetts towns with complete 1999 to 2004 THM and HAA data. RESULTS: We detected elevated aORs for cleft palate with DBP9 (highest quintile aOR = 3.52; 95% CI: 1.07, 11.60), HAA5, trichloroacetic acid (TCAA), and

A case of DiGeorge syndrome in Georgia.

Patient 6 - year- old boy, with history of recurrent otitis, cleft palate, was admitted to the hospital for fever, abdominal pain; He had high ESR,CRP, low T lymphocytes, VSD. Peritoneal fluid was positive for pseudomona aeroginoza. Diagnosis of DiGeorge syndrome was confirmed by further genetical study. Immune deficiencies should be considered when infections are severe, persistent resistant to standard treatment, or caused by opportunistic organisms. Treatments can often correct many of the critical and immediate problems associated with DiGeorge syndrome such as heart defects, calcium defec

Plastic and reconstructive surgery in Uganda--10 years experience.

We describe our experience of working in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Uganda over the last 10 years. There is a high burden of disease, a health system that is under resourced, and few qualified physicians to provide healthcare for a principally rural population. Training the physicians of the future is essential. Prevention and early wound management needs to be emphasized for traumatic injuries including burns. Subsidized up-country visits by trained specialists with the appropriate equipment are required to provide a service for the rural poor. There appears to be a high mortality

[Effects of tympanotomy and pressure equilibrium tube insertion during palatoplasty on prognoses of otitis media with effusion].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the tympanotomy and pressure equilibrium tube insertion during palatoplasty on the alleviation of otitis media with effusion. METHODS: A total of 49 ears in 38 cases of patients with cleft palate and otitis media with effusion were only treated with palatoplasty. Other 39 ears in 24 patients with middle ear effusion were treated with the palatoplasty and insertion of pressure equilibrium tubes. The function of the middle ear in each patient was evaluated 6 months after the operation. RESULTS: 48.7% of ears with middle ear eff

Human prenatal craniofacial development related to brain development under normal and pathologic conditions.

A survey is given of current knowledge of the interrelationship between facial, cranial and brain development in humans. First, normal facial, cranial (mandible, maxilla, palatine bone, cranial base, theca cranii, dentition), and brain development are described separately. Then, developmental interrelationships are illustrated under normal and pathologic conditions (cleft lip and palate, holoprosencephaly, anencephaly, amniotic band sequence). New observations are described in detail, and references are given to previously published articles. A close interconnection exists between the developm

Orofacial cleft research and the Sustainable Development Goals: a bibliometric study.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts (OFC) are common congenital conditions occurring in 1 of 700 births. They have lifelong nutritional, educational, and psychosocial impacts, and require multidisciplinary care from the antenatal period into adulthood. In 2010, the World Health Organization resolved to strengthen responses to congenital conditions, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 targets. In this bibliometric mapping exercise based on inferred SDG themes from metadata, we evaluate the extent to which OFC research mentions these SDGs, examining differences ac

Predicting the need for orthognathic surgery in cleft patients: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: A systematic review was performed to determine the predictive factors for orthognathic surgery in the cleft population. MATERIALS & METHODS: A systematic search was made in Cochrane, Embase, Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The search terms focus on the variables or factors that are associated with or predictive for the later need for orthognathic surgery in patients with cleft lip &/or palate (CLP). Clinical studies published from inception until July 2024 were included. Ful

Comprehensive Cleft Rhinoplasty Throughout Development.

The cleft nose treatment algorithm is nuanced and evolving. Management requires an individualized surgical approach, balancing early intervention with considerations for nasal and facial growth. Primary cleft rhinoplasty is now routinely practiced with improved outcomes when performed thoughtfully, while intermediate and definitive procedures allow for refinement as patients grow. Successful outcomes rely on precise surgical planning, meticulous perioperative care, managing expectations, and a multidisciplinary approach to address both functional and aesthetic goals.

Sustainable Health Programs: Challenges and Pathways to Success.

Outreach medical programs refer to medical or surgical care initiatives provided by volunteer teams typically from higher income countries and last from a few days to 8 weeks. To appreciate the development and empowerment of the onsite team, the use of "Sustainable Health Programs" (SHP) has become the preferred terminology at Global Smile Foundation. This study aims to review the challenges faced with implementing SHPs and propose a framework with the goal of implementing successful and sustainable programs. The cornerstone of such success is forging long-term, bidirectional partnerships with

Potential of Viruses as Environmental Etiological Factors for Non-Syndromic Orofacial Clefts.

In this study, we analyzed the potential of viral infections in the species Homo sapiens as environmental causes of orofacial clefts (OFCs). A scoring system was adapted for qualitatively assessing the potential of viruses to cause cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P). This assessment considered factors such as information from the literature, nucleotide and amino acid similarities, and the presence of Endogenous Viral Elements (EVEs). The analysis involved various algorithm packages within Basic Local Alignment Search Tool 2.13.0 software and databases from the National Center for Biotechnology Inf

Innovative Therapeutic Approaches for the Treatment of the Ocular Morbidities in Patients with EEC Syndrome.

Ectrodactyly-Ectodermal dysplasia-Clefting (EEC) syndrome is caused by heterozygous missense point mutations in the p63 gene, an important transcription factor during embryogenesis and for stem cell differentiation in stratified epithelia. Most of the cases are sporadic, related to de novo mutations arising during early-stage development. Familial cases show an autosomic dominant inheritance. The major cause of visual morbidity is limbal stem cell failure, which develops in the second to third decade of life. Patients often show ocular surface alterations, such as recurrent blepharitis and con

"Primary Correction of the Cleft Nasal Septum: A Systematic Review".

Patients affected by cleft lip and palate have a characteristic nasal deformity; however, the treatment timeline varies amongst providers. There has been a shift from a more conservative approach to earlier intervention in order to allow for more normal development of the nose. Form, function, and future development all must be considered. For this reason, this investigation was undertaken to present the current literature available on the effects to all aspects of primary septoplasty in the cleft nasal deformity. An initial list of 222 papers was identified, and it was determined that 16 pape
