Discrimination, Stress, and Substance Use Among Ethnoracial Minority Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men: Findings from the NIH All of Us Research Program.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine use are major public health concerns among ethnoracial minority gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), who experience compounded stressors related to sexual and ethnoracial minority identities. Guided by the Minority Stress Model, this study examined pathways linking everyday discrimination, perceived stress, and substance use among ethnoracial minority GBMSM. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether everyday discrimination is associated with unhealthy alcohol use, whether perceived stress mediates the association between discri

The prevalence of fentanyl in New York City's unregulated drug supply as measured through drug checking offered at syringe service programs.

BACKGROUND: Drug checking is a harm reduction strategy that provides people who use drugs (PWUD) information about the composition of a substance. Drug checking has been identified as a key public health response to the continually evolving overdose crisis. METHODS: The New York City Health Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) partnered with existing syringe programs to launch a drug-checking pilot study. The study offered multiple point-of-care drug-checking technologies including fentanyl test strips (FTS) and Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, as well as secondary

Polysubstance use and post-discharge mortality risk among hospitalized patients with opioid use disorder.

Polysubstance use is becoming increasingly common and presents several harms. This study aimed to examine the association of comorbid cocaine, alcohol (binge drinking), and sedative use with mortality among hospitalized patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). A subsample of adult medical/surgical hospital patients with OUD who were seen by a hospital addiction consultation service in Baltimore City and enrolled in a randomized trial of a patient navigation intervention were included in this study (N = 314; 45 % female; 48 % White; mean age = 44). Death certificate data from the Maryland Divis

Self-Reported Substance Use With Clinician Interviewers Versus Self-Administered Surveys.

OBJECTIVE: Underreporting of substance use is a frequent concern about studies based on self-report, but few robust studies have examined the agreement between different methods for capturing self-reported substance use. The current study therefore used repeated measures to compare self-reported substance use using (a) clinician interviewers and (b) self-administered computerized surveys in a sample that included both inpatients and community residents. METHOD: Adults age 18 years and older with problematic substance use were recruited from the community or an inpatient addiction treatment fa

Ethanol and illicit drugs acute use and abuse as risk factors for suicide: A case-control study based on forensic autopsies in the Basque Country, Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Abuse/dependence and acute use of ethanol and illicit drug are considered risk factors for suicide. The risk is also influenced by demographic conditions and/or psychiatric comorbidity. The aim of the study was to test the association between presence of ethanol, illicit substances and prescribed drugs in suicide decedents and controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Case-control study of autopsies performed in the Biscay Forensic Pathology Service, Basque Country, Spain from 01/01/2010 to 30/06/2021 in subjects between 15 and 55 years old. Safety and efficacy of a digital therapeutic for substance use disorder: Secondary analysis of data from a NIDA clinical trials network study.

Background: Traditional treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs) rely heavily on face-to-face interactions, which pose substantial limitations for patients. A clinical trial of a digital therapeutic (DT), delivering behavioral therapy demonstrated safety and efficacy in a population including patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) not treated with buprenorphine, which is not a guideline-recommended approach. This study re-analyzed the data excluding patients with OUD to more closely approximate real-world patient populations. Methods: Secondary analysis of patients with substance use dis

Optogenetic brain-stimulation reward: A new procedure to re-evaluate the rewarding versus aversive effects of cannabinoids in dopamine transporter-Cre mice.

Despite extensive research, the rewarding effects of cannabinoids are still debated. Here, we used a newly established animal procedure called optogenetic intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) (oICSS) to re-examine the abuse potential of cannabinoids in mice. A specific adeno-associated viral vector carrying a channelrhodopsin gene was microinjected into the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to express light-sensitive channelrhodopsin in dopamine (DA) neurons of transgenic dopamine transporter (DAT)-Cre mice. Optogenetic stimulation of VTA DA neurons was highly reinforcing and produced a classical "

Significant, replicable, and functional associations between KTN1 variants and alcohol and drug codependence.

The gray matter volume (GMV) of the putamen has been reported to be regulated by kinectin 1 gene (KTN1). As a hub of the dopaminergic circuit, the putamen is widely implicated in the etiological processes of substance use disorders (SUD). Here, we aimed to identify robust and reliable associations between KTN1 SNPs and SUD across multiple samples. We examined the associations between SUD and KTN1 SNPs in four independent population-based or family-based samples (n = 10,209). The potential regulatory effects of the risk alleles on the putamen GMVs, the effects of alcohol, nicotine, marijuana an

Integrated Effects of Neonatal Ventral Hippocampal Lesions and Impoverished Social-Environmental Rearing on Endophenotypes of Mental Illness and Addiction Vulnerability.

A wide range of mental illnesses show high rates of addiction comorbidities regardless of their genetic, neurodevelopmental, and/or adverse-environmental etiologies. Understanding how the spectrum of mental illnesses produce addiction vulnerability will be key to discovering more effective preventions and integrated treatments for adults with addiction and dual diagnosis comorbidities. A population of 131 rats containing a spectrum of etiological mental illness models and degrees of severity was experimentally generated by crossing neonatal ventral hippocampal lesions (NVHL; n = 68) or control

Illicit drug prices and quantity discounts: A comparison between a cryptomarket, social media, and police data.

BACKGROUND: Illicit drugs are increasingly sold on cryptomarkets and on social media. Buyers and sellers perceive these online transactions as less risky than conventional street-level exchanges. Following the Risks & Prices framework, law enforcement is the largest cost component of illicit drug distribution. We examine whether prices on cryptomarkets are lower than prices on social media and prices reported by law enforcement on primarily offline markets. METHODS: Data consists of online advertisements for illicit drugs in Sweden in 2018, scraped from the cryptomarket Flugsvamp 2.0 (n = 826

Independent associations and effect modification between lifetime substance use and recent mood disorder diagnosis with household food insecurity.

Poor mental health and substance use are associated with food insecurity, however, their potential combined effects have not been studied. This study explored independent associations and effect modification between lifetime substance use and mood disorder in relation to food insecurity. Poisson regression analysis of data from British Columbia respondents (n = 13,450; 12 years+) in the 2007/08 Canadian Community Health Survey was conducted. Measures included The Household Food Security Survey Module (7.3% food insecure), recent diagnosis of a mood disorder (self-reported; 9.5%), lifetime use
