Sigmoid volvulus in a postmenopausal woman with ovarian cyst torsion: A rare case report with review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Large bowel obstruction in adults may result from either mechanical or non-mechanical causes, with sigmoid volvulus (SV) being one of the most common mechanical etiologies. Concurrent SV and ovarian cyst torsion (OCT) is an extremely rare occurrence, particularly in postmenopausal women. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 50-year-old postmenopausal woman who initially presented with symptoms of colonic obstruction. Further evaluation revealed SV in conjunction with a large ovarian mass with torsion. The patient underwent unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, subtotal colectomy

Laparoscopic treatment of colonic endometriosis causing periodic abdominal pain and hematochezia: A case report.

RATIONALE: Endometriosis, a benign disease, has a malignant biological behavior and is highly prone to recurrence. Although gastrointestinal involvement is the most common site for extra-genital endometriosis, deep infiltrative endometriosis, which affects the mucosal layer, is very rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 44-year-old woman with a 6-month history of recurring abdominal pain and Hematochezia. The patient visited several hospitals over the past six months and was suspected to have been diagnosed with a digestive disease, for which medication was ineffective, leading to a great deal of anxiety

Inverted colonic diverticulum: An endoscopic examination and presentation.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the frequency, morphological features, differential diagnosis, possible adverse events of inverted colonic diverticulum (ICD), which may be misdiagnosed as polyps. METHODS: In all, 810 patients who underwent a colonoscopy between April 2016 and November 2019 were included in the study, and their data were evaluated retrospectively. Colonoscopic procedures were performed at a single center by the same endoscopist. RESULTS: Among all the 810 patients, the prevalence of diverticulum was 29.58% (121/409) in men and 25.19% (n = 101/401) in women, respectively. ICD

Preoperative Diagnosis of Intestinal Endometriosis by Magnifying Colonoscopy and Target Biopsy.

Endometriosis can affect any portion of the gastrointestinal tract. A preoperative definitive diagnosis of intestinal endometriosis is difficult, because there is no characteristic endoscopic finding and the endoscopic biopsies usually sample insufficient endometrial tissue for pathologic diagnosis. To our knowledge, the magnifying endoscopic features of intestinal mucosal endometriosis have not been well documented. In this study, we report a case of intestinal endometriosis diagnosed preoperatively by magnifying image-enhanced colonoscopy and target biopsy. A 45-year-old woman was referred t

In vivo association to human colon of Lactobacillus paracasei B21060: map from biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Adhesion to the intestinal mucosa is one of the main suitable properties for probiotic bacteria. Several in vitro studies have been published, but a very few data are available about the in vivo adhesion to intestinal surfaces of probiotics. Moreover, there are no data regarding the distribution of a probiotic strain along the entire intestine. AIM: The present study aimed to preliminary evaluate the intestinal recovery of a new synbiotic formulation containing Lactobacillus paracasei B21060. METHODS: Seven volunteers participated in the study. Subjects assumed three times a day

Flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscopy and double-contrast barium-enema examination in the identification of adenomas and carcinoma of the colon.

To assess the accuracy of the flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscope, 227 consecutive patients (mean age 61.8 +/- 13 years) requiring investigation of colonic symptoms were evaluated using rigid and flexible sigmoidoscopy (PAF and KDV) and double-contrast barium enema (SSA). Patients with equivocal findings or adenomatous polyps underwent colonoscopy (TWB). Thirty-four patients had carcinoma and 50 patients had one or more adenomatous polyps (greater than 5mm). The neoplastic yield from rigid sigmoidoscopy was 12 per cent, flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscopy 90 per cent, and double-contrast barium en

Hirschprung's disease: long-term follow-up of 65 cases.

The author reviews 65 cases of Hirschsprung's disease seen and treated in Saskatoon between 1951 and 1981. The annual incidence of this disease is 1/4000 live births. Overall mortality was 25% and related to two factors: (a) delay in diagnosis and surgical treatment with a high incidence of enterocolitis in the earlier years of the series; (b) a mortality of 83% in patients with small bowel aganglionosis. Thirty-five resections were done for colonic aganglionosis; there was one death that occurred 20 years ago, indicating that surgery is safe in this disease, but delay in treatment is not. Of

Biopsy-derived colonoid air-liquid interface monolayers reveal persistent mucosal defects in ulcerative colitis patients.

BACKGROUND: The inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by colonic mucosal inflammation and barrier dysfunction. We hypothesized that UC causes persistent defects in mucosal homeostasis, evident even in the absence of active inflammation, contributing to disease chronicity. METHODS: To test our hypothesis, we grew patient biopsy-derived sigmoid colonoids into air-liquid interface (ALI) monolayers, characterizing them through microscopy, proteomics, bulk RNA Sequencing (RNAseq), and their susceptibility to UC patient-isolated Escherichia coli pathobiont p19A.

Dolichocolon is common in pediatric gastroenterology patients with constipation and associated complaints.

OBJECTIVES: Dolichocolon (DC), classified under International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) code Q43.8 ("Other specified congenital malformations of intestine"), refers to an elongated or redundant large intestine. Recent studies in adults indicate a role for dolichocolon in constipation and disorders of gut-brain interaction. Contrast enema (CE) imaging is commonly used to identify DC, typically defined as a sigmoid colon extending above, or a transverse colon descending below, the iliac crest line. Despite its potential relevance, the prevalence and clinical significanc

Robot-assisted laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal cancer with persistent descending mesocolon: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent descending mesocolon (PDM) is a fixed abnormality in which the descending to sigmoid colon adheres to the small intestinal mesentery or right pelvic wall through right displacement. Surgery for colorectal cancer with PDM is difficult. Therefore, in addition to the anatomical characteristics of PDM, the extent of adhesion and characteristics of vascular courses need to be assessed in individual patients. The number of patients now undergoing laparoscopic or robot-assisted surgery for colorectal cancer has rapidly increased. We herein report a rectal cancer patient with

Gastrointestinal amyloidosis in a patient with smoldering multiple myeloma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) is an asymptomatic plasma cell proliferative disorder that can progress to multiple myeloma (MM). Amyloidosis (light chain) (AL) is the most common form of systemic amyloidosis. There are few reports of SMM coexisting with AL involving the digestive tract. CASE SUMMARY: A 63-year-old woman presented with lower limb edema, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and hematochezia. Gastroscopy showed gastric retention, gastric angler mucosal coarseness, hyperemia, and mild oozing of blood. Colonoscopy showed hyperemic and edematous mucosa of the distal

Opioid drugs and stercoral perforation of the colon: Case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Stercoral perforation of the colon is a rare pathology, which is believed to be caused by an increased intraluminal pressure created by a fecaloma. Opioid induced constipation is a rare and often unsuspected cause of colonic perforation. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of a 58-year-old woman, who presented to the emergency department (ED) with severe hypotension, abdominal pain and gastrointestinal bleeding. She was found to have a diffusely tender and distended abdomen. Her history was positive for long-term suboxone use and chronic constipation. Abdominopelvic compute

Colonic ischaemia and intra-abdominal hypertension following open repair of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to investigate the association between colonic ischaemia and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) after surgery for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA). METHODS: Sigmoid colon perfusion was monitored with an intramucosal pH (pHi) tonometer. Patients with a pHi of 7.1 or less were treated for suspected hypovolaemia with intravenous colloids and colonoscopy. IAP was measured every 4 h. Patients with an IAP of 20 mmHg or more had neuromuscular blockade, relaparotomy or both. RESULTS: A total of 52 consecutive patients had open rAAA repair; 30-day mortality was 27 per cen

Role of protein kinase C in aldosterone-induced non-genomic inhibition of basolateral potassium channels in human colonic crypts.

Aldosterone produces rapid, non-genomic, inhibition of basolateral intermediate conductance K(+) (IK(Ca)) channels in human colonic crypt cells but the intracellular second messengers involved are unclear. We therefore evaluated the role of protein kinase C (PKC) in aldosterone's non-genomic inhibitory effect on basolateral IK(Ca) channels in crypt cells from normal human sigmoid colon. Patch clamp studies revealed that in cell-attached patches, IK(Ca) channel activity decreased progressively to 38+/-8% (P<0.001) of the basal value 10 min after the addition of 1 nmol/L aldosterone, and decreas

Roles of substance P receptors in human colon circular muscle: alterations in diverticular disease.

The characteristics of [(125)I]Bolton-Hunter[Sar(9),Met(O(2))(11)]substance P ([(125)I]BH-SarSP) binding were investigated in membranes of human ascending, transverse, distal, and sigmoid colon circular muscle. Binding of [(125)I]BH-SarSP was of high affinity (K(D) = 68 nM) and low capacity (B(max) = 0.31 fmol/mg of wet weight tissue), and showed no regional differences. [(125)I]BH-SarSP binding was inhibited by SP approximately equal to [Pro(9)]SP > or = (2S,3S)-3-(2-methoxybenzylamino)-2-phenylpiperidine (CP99994) >> neurokinin (NK) A > or = neuropeptide gamma > [Lys(5),MeLeu(9),Nle(10)]-NKA
