Systematic review and conceptual framework for trans and nonbinary psychological well-being.

This systematic review considered the quantitative research on transgender and nonbinary (TNB) psychological well-being (PWB) in relation to the shifting sociopolitical landscape across the past 50 years. Using an empirically informed framework to conceptualize PWB outside of cisnormativity, we reviewed 93 studies of PWB and organized them according to three socioecological levels of gender identity affirmation: (a) societal affirmation, (b) interpersonal affirmation, and (c) individual strengths. Using a critical intersectional framework, we characterized how well this literature represents t

A rare lumbosacral trunk variation: communicating branches to the femoral and obturator nerves.

BACKGROUND: This report presents a case of bilateral lumbosacral trunk (LST) variation observed during cadaveric dissection and to analyze its possible developmental mechanism and clinical significance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During the dissection of a Chinese adult male specimen, bilateral variations of the LST were observed, with communicating branches joining the femoral nerve and/or obturator nerve. RESULTS: The right LST was formed solely by the ventral ramus of the fifth lumbar nerve (L5), without contribution from the fourth lumbar nerve (L4), and gave off one communicating branch (1.

Risk Environments of Permanent Supportive Housing for Formerly Incarcerated People with Serious Mental Illnesses: A Protocol for a Novel Mixed Methods Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Formerly incarcerated people with serious mental illnesses (SMI) experience the criminal legal system unequally and have elevated rates of recidivism, homelessness, general medical problems, and substance use disorders. Permanent supportive housing (PSH) can be used during reentry, but it has limited resources for addressing community integration, a key component of reentry. PSH are often located in high-poverty environments with increased criminogenic risk. The geography of PSH also includes public spaces, which are associated with positive outcomes. The risk environment framework

Caregiver perspectives regarding the impact of feeding difficulties on mealtime participation for primary school-aged autistic children and their families.

PURPOSE: Although up to 89% of autistic children experience feeding difficulties, little is known about the impact of these difficulties on mealtime participation. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of feeding difficulties on the mealtime participation of autistic children and their families based on caregiver experiences. METHOD: Participants were 78 caregivers who completed online surveys for 80 children (5-12 years) with a formal diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The online survey contained eight open-ended questions exploring how children participated in mealtimes

Raising Awareness of Pelvic Floor Disorders Among Cultural Health Brokers to Improve Refugee and Immigrant Women's Pelvic Floor Health.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Pelvic Floor Disorders (PFDs) are common and negatively affect women's quality of life. Despite availability of treatments, women often do not seek medical care. Patient knowledge is a known barrier to accessing care. It has been shown that knowledge of PFDs is lower in Canadian immigrant communities. We hypothesized that educating Cultural Health Brokers (CHBs) on PFD will significantly increase the CHBs' knowledge and empower them to effectively communicate this knowledge to their communities, improving awareness and access to care among immigrant women. METHODS

Schinzel-Giedion syndrome: communication, feeding and motor skills in 16 individuals.

Schinzel-Giedion Syndrome (SGS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by pathogenic SETBP1 gain-of-function variants. SGS medical features have been well described. Associated skills critical to quality of life have such as communication, feeding, and motor skills are yet to be characterised. Here we used standardised caregiver report tools to characterise these skills as well as the medical features, in 16 children with SGS (median = 5 years, 7 months, range 6 months to 12.5 years). Vineland-3 scores reflected severe impairment in communication, daily living, socialisation and motor sk

Gender diversity in a Chinese community sample and its associations with autism traits.

Emerging evidence suggests that gender dysphoria or gender diversity (GD) intersects frequently with autism spectrum disorder or autism traits. However, the magnitude and interpretation of this link continue to be debated. Most child studies on this topic were performed in clinical populations, and little is known about the generalizability of this co-occurrence to the broader community, especially to non-Western samples. Also, little is known about whether specific subdomains of autism are more strongly associated with GD. Therefore, we investigated GD and its association with autism traits i

Virtual Reality Air Travel Training with Children on the Autism Spectrum: A Preliminary Report.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is categorized by deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside repetitive, restrictive behaviors or interests (RRBIs). Previous research supports the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) to train a variety of specific skills (i.e., riding a bus or crossing the street) as well as more complex social skills, such as emotion recognition and functional communication. The present reports the implementation of a VR-based air travel functional communication activity in five children diagnosed with ASD. Using an iPhone X and Google Cardboard device, researcher

Profiling β-thalassaemia mutations in India at state and regional levels: implications for genetic education, screening and counselling programmes.

UNLABELLED: Thalassaemia and sickle cell disease have been recognized by the World Health Organization as important inherited disorders principally impacting on the populations of low income countries. To create a national and regional profile of β-thalassaemia mutations in the population of India, a meta-analysis was conducted on 17 selected studies comprising 8,505 alleles and offering near-national coverage for the disease. At the national level 52 mutations accounted for 97.5% of all β-thalassaemia alleles, with IVSI-5(G>C) the most common disease allele (54.7%). Population stratification

General and disease-specific risk factors for depression after ischemic stroke: a two-step Cox regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke depression (PSD) frequently complicates stroke and is associated with an impaired functional outcome, more severe cognitive deficits, a reduced quality of life, and a higher mortality. The aim of this study was to assess whether general risk factors for major depressive disorder (MDD) in the community are also risk factors for PSD, and to identify additional, stroke-related risk factors. METHODS: In a hospital setting, 190 consecutively admitted patients were assessed for MDD 1 month after stroke, and at follow-up after 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. A Cox model was created wi

HMGB1 functional plasticity in neurodegenerative diseases and its translational implications.

High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a chromatin-associated protein that can be redistributed and released during cellular stress, when it acts as an extracellular alarmin within the broader family of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Its functions depend on subcellular localization, redox and post-translational modification state, cellular source, mode of release, and molecular partners. This critical narrative review examines how these variables shape HMGB1 biology in Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's disease (HD

Mucosal microbiota and intraepithelial lymphocyte remodeling link maternal immune activation to neuroimmune outcomes in female and male offspring.

BACKGROUND: Maternal immune activation (MIA) is associated with increased risk for neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder, yet its long-term impact on intestinal immune-microbial programming remains incompletely understood. Here, we investigated whether lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced MIA drives persistent alterations in the offspring mucosal immune environment, with a focus on intraepithelial lymphocytes, mucosa-associated microbiota, systemic cytokines, and prefrontal cortical immune-related readouts. METHODS: MIA was induced in wild-type BALB/cB

PEEC: The Protected Entities Ethics Checklist for Collecting Speech Data From Vulnerable Clinical Populations.

PURPOSE: The rapid advancement of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and natural language processing technologies has created significant opportunities for clinical applications within speech and language disorders, yet these capabilities remain largely confined to high-resource languages and populations. As research communities work to address these inequities through inclusive speech data collection, the intersection of clinical vulnerability, linguistic diversity, and emerging speech and language technologies creates ethical considerations that are rarely addressed by existing guidelines.
