'But … Would I Be Able to Toast With Friends?' When Service Users Ask for New Care Pathways.

INTRODUCTION: The WHO European Mental Health Action Plan (2013-2030) emphasises the need to generate services that are more inclusive and attentive to the co-construction of care practices. This exploratory research investigates the needs of young substance abusers shown during their stay in residential communities; in particular, it explores the idea that treatment may include a new phase focused on how to manage moderate or controlled alcohol intake during residential care. Interviews with young ex-users open up critical reflections on complete abstinence programmes from all substances, incl

The SARC-F score may indirectly reflect the extracellular water-to-total body water ratio.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 guidelines, SARC-F is used to screen for sarcopenia. SARC-F is measured based on five components: strength, assistance with walking, rising from a chair, climbing stairs, and falling. However, it has been reported that SARC-F has high specificity but low sensitivity for sarcopenia screening. Considering that SARC-F is currently recommended for sarcopenia screening, indicating the utility of SARC-F not only in sarcopenia screening but also in other aspects is pivotal. This cross-sectional study aimed to clarify the relationship b

Surveillance of public health pathogens in Lagos wastewater canals: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is already being adopted for the surveillance of health conditions of communities and shows great potential for the monitoring of infectious pathogens of public health importance. There is however paucity of robust data to support extensive WBE in Nigeria. This study evaluated the prevalence of clinically relevant infectious pathogens and provided antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacteria pathogens in wastewater canals in Lagos State at a single point in time. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional survey of wastewater canals in 20 Local Governm

Patient- and Provider-Reported Experiences of a Mobile Novel Digital Therapeutic in People With Opioid Use Disorder (reSET-O): Feasibility and Acceptability Study.

BACKGROUND: Medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder, such as buprenorphine, are effective and essential for addressing the opioid epidemic. However, high dropout rates from medication remain a challenge. Behavioral treatment with contingency management and cognitive behavioral counseling has shown promise for improving the outcomes of buprenorphine treatment but is complicated to deliver. The delivery of behavioral treatment through technology-based platforms has the potential to make it more feasible for widespread dissemination. OBJECTIVE: reSET-O is a prescription digital ther

An Assessment of Risk Factors of Delayed Speech and Language in Children: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Communication is the exchange of information through speaking, writing, and other mediums. Speech is the expression of thoughts in spoken words. Language is the principal method that humans use for relaying information; consisting of words conveyed by speech, writing, or gestures. Language is the conceptual processing of communication. Problems in communication or oral motor function are called speech and language disorders. Developmental delay is diagnosed when a child does not attain normal developmental milestones at the expected age. Speech and/or language disorders are amongs

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Online Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Support Community Members: Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have faced unique challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research from the first two months of the pandemic suggests that a small proportion of people with OCD experienced worsening in their OCD symptoms since the pandemic began, whereas the rest experienced either no change or an improvement in their symptoms. However, as society-level factors relating to the pandemic have evolved, the effects of the pandemic on people with OCD have likely changed as well, in complex and population-specific ways. Therefore, this study contributes t

Understanding the roles of community health workers in improving perinatal health equity in rural Uttar Pradesh, India: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite substantial reductions in perinatal deaths (stillbirths and early neonatal deaths), India's perinatal mortality rates remain high, both nationally and in individual states. Rates are highest among disadvantaged socio-economic groups. To address this, India's National Health Mission has trained community health workers called Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) to counsel and support women by visiting them at home before and after childbirth. We conducted a qualitative study to explore the roles of ASHAs' home visits in improving equity in perinatal health between soc

Social Consequences of Ebola Containment Measures in Liberia.

INTRODUCTION: In the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Liberia, two major emergency disease-control measures were cremation of bodies and enforcement of quarantine for asymptomatic individuals suspected of being in contact with a positive case. Enforced by State-related actors, these were promoted as the only method to curtail transmissions as soon as possible. However, as with other harsh measures witnessed by Liberian citizens, in many cases those measures elicited uncontrolled negative reactions within the communities (stigma; fear) that produced, in some cases, the opposite effect of t

Breakthrough pain in community-dwelling patients with cancer pain and noncancer pain, part 1: prevalence and characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Most breakthrough pain (BTP) studies assess patients with advanced cancer or those receiving inpatient care. Studies in noncancer populations are limited to surveys of pain clinics and patients with other advanced diseases. To better understand BTP, data are needed from less selected populations. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate BTP in opioid-treated ambulatory patients with chronic cancer or noncancer pain treated in community practices. METHODS: Primary care physicians or community-based oncologists recruited a convenience sample for a cross-sectional study of BTP at

Assessment of a Newark neighborhood: process and outcomes.

In 1996, the members of the St. Columba Collaboration conducted a grassroots neighborhood assessment of a Hispanic area in Newark, New Jersey. This assessment was undertaken during an era of significant political and policy change in New Jersey. As a community-driven and implemented effort, the processes, methods, and outcomes of this assessment provide lessons on community activism, political awareness, and strategic planning. Quantitative surveys were distributed to local residents as well as users of the various services provided through Collaboration programs. Ten qualitative focus groups

Rationale, Design, and Baseline Characteristics of the TARGET (Targeted Assessment and Recruitment of Geriatrics for Effective Fall Prevention Treatments) Cohort of Older Adults for Assessing Fall and Fracture Risk: Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Falls and fractures are a major clinical concern for older adults. International clinical guidelines recommend annual fall risk screening for all adults aged 60 years and older. However, existing falls risk-screening algorithms have shown limited sensitivity and specificity in detecting future falls. Emerging health technologies, including wearable sensors, in-silico finite element models (FEMs), and virtual reality (VR) technology, show promise in enhancing fall and fracture risk assessments by providing more personalized objective data to support targeted primary prevention. Pragmatic Strategy Empowering Paramedics to Assess Low-Risk Trauma Patients With the Canadian C-Spine Rule and Selectively Transport Them Without Immobilization: Protocol for a Stepped-Wedge Cluster Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Each year, half a million patients with a potential neck (c-spine) injury are transported to Ontario emergency departments (EDs). Less than 1.0% (1/100) of these patients have a neck bone fracture. Even less (1/200, 0.5%) have a spinal cord injury or nerve damage. Currently, paramedics transport all trauma victims (with or without an injury) by ambulance using a backboard, cervical collar, and head immobilizers. Importantly, prolonged immobilization is often unnecessary; it causes patient discomfort and pain, decreases community access to paramedics, contributes to ED crowding, and

Real-world analysis of depression-related adverse events associated with the adsorbed anthrax vaccine: integrating pharmacovigilance signals, machine learning risk prediction, and transcriptomic mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Anthrax remains a life-threatening zoonotic disease in resource-limited settings. Adsorbed anthrax vaccine (AVA, BioThrax) is the only United States-authorized preexposure prophylaxis for high-risk Bacillus anthracis exposure. Although AVA safety has been described, depression-related adverse events (AEs) remain insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated real-world depression-related safety signals associated with AVA and anthrax-related antibacterial agents. METHODS: AVA-related AE reports were extracted from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), and depress

3D Printed Cardiac Models as an Adjunct to Traditional Teaching of Anatomy in Congenital Heart Disease-A Randomised Controlled Study.

INTRODUCTION: Three-dimensional (3D) printed cardiac models are increasingly being used for medical education, simulation and training, communication, surgical planning and research. Given the complexities of congenital cardiac anatomy, 3D printing is well suited as an adjunct to traditional teaching methods. This study aims to explore the influence of 3D printed cardiac models as a teaching aid for nurses and paediatric trainees. We hypothesise that using 3D models as an adjunct to didactic teaching methods improves knowledge and confidence levels of participants, regardless of their cardiolo
