The aim of the present study was to experimentally evaluate marginal and periapical healing in extracted and subsequently replanted teeth following extraoral cementing of apically exposed titanium root screws in the root canal. In 5 out of 6 replanted teeth, the periodontal tissues had healed with a normal periodontal membrane or healed surface resorptions indicating that only minor trauma had been inflicted during the extraoral procedure. In 3 out of 6 teeth, total or partial osseointegration of the titanium screws was seen, while a connective tissue capsule had formed around the remaining 3

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare autoimmune connective tissue disease with characteristic skin manifestations and possible muscle involvement. Recent advances in classification system to include skin-predominant subtypes, understanding underlying pathogenic mechanisms and the relationship between clinical phenotypes and myositis-specific autoantibodies have led to development of novel therapeutic options. This corresponds with efforts to develop better outcome measures to accurately catch the patients' current disease status and treatment-induced improvements. This report will review the updates

Uveitis has been associated with multiple autoimmune conditions. Scleroderma, a connective tissue disease,is rarelyreported in association with inflammatory eye disease in adults. The authors present a case of a 48-year-old Asian male with systemic sclerosis who developed bilateral anterior uveitis. Clinical testing and investigation could not identify an underlying etiology other than systemic sclerosis.Ocular manifestations seen in association with scleroderma include eyelid skin changes, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, and retinal microvascular abnormalities.Only a small number of cases of uvei

Coronary artery aneurysms or ectasias are dilatations of arterial segments, which are typically incidentally identified at angiography. Several large clinical series have described the epidemiology and natural history of these malformations. The most common etiologic factor for coronary aneurysms is atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, but they can also be congenital or secondary to inflammatory or connective tissue disorders, with a well-known association with Kawasaki disease. Treatment may consist of surgical, percutaneous, or medical interventions. This review summarizes the current st

The connective tissue disease systemic sclerosis (SSc) is still a challenge to every rheumatologist. SSc is characterized by progressing fibrosis of the skin and internal organs, abnormal activation of the immune system and distinct changes in microcirculation. Although it is a rare disease with a prevalence of about 20:100,000 one may come across it in daily practice. SSc is classified into limited and diffuse forms. Both entities usually involve internal organs. Life expectancy is limited and depends predominantly on the extent of the organs involved. Therefore, it is essential to diagnose S

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects chiefly the joints of the axial skeleton. It is a multisystem disease. Several extra-auricular manifestations of ankylosing spondylitis have been described including ocular, cardiovascular, renal, and neurologic complications. Pulmonary involvement consists principally of upper lobe fibrocystic changes and chest wall restriction. Relapsing polychondritis, on the other hand, is a rare disorder characterized by progressive inflammation and degeneration of the cartilaginous structures and other connective tissues throughout the

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as fragilitas ossium or brittle bone disease, is a rare, inherited disease of connective tissue resulting in errors in collagen I synthesis. The incidence of the condition has been quoted as being between 1:20,000 to 1:60,000 live births, affecting females more than males. It has been classified into four types. This case study concerns a pregnant woman suffering from the most common form of OI, type I, which affects 80% of sufferers and occurs as an autosomal dominant inheritance or as a new mutation.

Water tests on atrioventricular valves of 125 dead patients with cardiological diseases revealed in 2 of them (1.6%) sagging of mitral cusps in the direction of the left atrium. The valve insufficiency was caused by the rupture of chordal threads in rheumatic desorganization of the connective tissues, necrosis and sclerosis of the papillary muscles in ischemic heart disease. Histological examinations of 104 papillary muscles from 24 autopsy cases showed their frequent involvement, particularly in myocardial infarction of the left ventricle. Under these conditions, comparatively rare developmen

Selective immunoglobulin M deficiency (sIgMD) is an immunodeficiency with undefined pathogenesis and commonly presenting with recurrent infections. 1 The European Society for Immunodeficiencies Registry defines sIgMD as a serum IgM level repeatedly below 2 SD of normal with normal levels of serum IgA, IgG and IgG subclasses, normal vaccination responses, absence of T-cell defects and absence of causative external factors. Rarely it can also be associated with autoimmune diseases. 2-7 Here we describe a patient with primary sIgMD; who presented with multiple autoimmune diseases without a histor

Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia (AFOP) is a rare histologic interstitial pneumonia pattern recently described in the literature with fewer than 120 cases published. AFOP is often difficult to diagnose and may be mistaken for other pulmonary disorders such as interstitial pneumonias or pneumonitides. Patients often present with vague symptoms of cough, dyspnea, hemoptysis, fatigue, and occasionally respiratory failure. Radiological findings show diffuse patchy opacities and ground glass appearance of the lungs. On histologic examination, intra-alveolar fibrin balls are observed. We dis

PURPOSE: Celiac disease (CD), a systemic autoimmune disorder that typically involves duodenal mucosa, can also affect other intestinal areas. Duodenal and oral mucosa organ culture has already been demonstrated as a reliable procedure to identify CD. The present study investigated gluten-dependent immunological activation of colonic mucosa in CD patients. We took advantage of the numerous colonoscopies performed for various clinical conditions or only for defensive medicine.
METHODS: Forty-four patients with gastrointestinal symptoms or in need of colorectal cancer screening were divided into

RATIONALE: Fibrocytes possess increased differentiability into α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA)(+) myofibroblasts in chronic obstructive asthma (COA) and contribute to pulmonary fibrosis. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) induces matrix-associated gene expression through the ETA receptor (ETAR) and promotes fibroblast differentiation. However, the mechanism of fibrocyte differentiation remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To define the roles of the ETAR and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) expression in fibrocytes in the development of fibrosis in COA.
METHODS: Blood nonadherent non-T (NANT) cells were isolate

Recent attention has been directed towards the role of mast cells in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus. Mast cells are responsible for trafficking of inflammatory cells into the connective tissue that in turn helps in progression and maintenance of the chronicity of oral lichen planus. In the present study we have evaluated the mast cell count and its cell types using toluidine blue stain, in oral lichen planus and compared it with oral lichenoid reactions. We have observed an increase in mast cell count in both these conditions in comparison to normal mucosa. Also, a significant differen

Different stages of Trypanosoma cruzi are seen during mammalian infection. Histologic sections of infected hearts have shown amastigotes and, when using immunohistochemistry (IHC), parasite antigens; however, demonstration of trypomastigotes in these tissues has proven elusive. Using a mouse strain that develops chagasic cardiomyopathy (histologically similar to human infection) 70 days after injecting T. cruzi-Brazil strain, we studied the distribution of parasite stages and the extent of inflammation. All organs had varying amounts of mononuclear inflammation by day 10, which peaked between

The significance of anti-cardiolipin antibodies (ACLA) in patients with a range of autoimmune and infective disorders was investigated in this study. Although lower levels of IgG and IgM ACLA were present in 77 of 400 patients' sera (19%), high antibody levels were found in less than 5% of patients. These latter patients belonged to three clinical categories: patients with connective tissue disease (CTD), infectious mononucleosis or biological false positive serology. An assay was developed to measure lupus anticoagulant (LA) activity in serum: significant LA activity was found in the CTD pati

Comparative histological and neurohistological investigations in various atrophic conditions of the vulva (lichen sclerosus et atrophicans, vulvar kraurosis and senile vulvar atrophy) have been performed. Lichen sclerosus et atrophicans is an idiopathic disease within the group of atrophic inflammatory conditions. The main lesions involve the subepidermal zone which is surrounded by an inflammatory infiltration and shows at the same time the degeneration of all the fibrous and cellular components of the tissue. The resulting metabolic disturbances in the lesions enhance the degenerative proces

Idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP), which is referred to as "idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)" in US and European countries or "cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis (CFA)" in UK, is considered to result from an uncontrolled, chronic inflammatory process in the lower respiratory tract and alveoli of the lung. It is conceivable that some hereditary background may contribute to the disease in susceptible individuals. In IPF, alveolitis involving activation of alveolar macrophages (AM), neutrophils, T- and B-lymphocytes and/or other inflammatory cell types precedes the injury to the lung paren

BACKGROUND: Monoclonal immunoglobulin (M-Ig) and/or free light chains (FLC) can cause a wide range of organ and tissue damage. The most common are various forms of nephropathies, for which the term monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance was created, and a morphological classification was proposed by the "International Kidney and Monoclonal Gammopathy Research Group." Another large group consists of clinical entities where, among other things, various forms of skin damage occur. For these, the group designation monoclonal gammopathy of cutaneous significance was created. Although the etiop
