Can S-100B serum protein help to save cranial CT resources in a peripheral trauma centre? A study and consensus paper.

BACKGROUND: Cranial CT (CCT) is the gold standard to rule out traumatic brain injury. The serum level of the protein S-100B has recently been proposed as promising marker of traumatic brain injury. We prospectively investigated whether it might be a reliable tool for CCT triage in mild brain injury at a peripheral trauma centre with limited CT resources. METHODS: Patients with mild head injury and a Glasgow Coma Score of 13-15 admitted to the emergency department of a peripheral trauma centre were enrolled. Blood samples for S-100B analysis were obtained after clinical evaluation. The cut-off

Breaking the cycle of pain in interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome: toward standardization of early diagnosis and treatment: consensus panel recommendations.

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) affects about 15% of female adults in the United States. The source of this pain in many women is the bladder, specifically interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS). Despite the frequent occurrence of IC/PBS as a cause of CPP, there currently are no universally accepted guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of this disorder, and, consequently, many patients do not receive appropriate treatment in a timely manner. In an effort to develop a rational way to diagnose and treat patients with CPP, a panel of leaders in urology, gynecology, urogynecology and

Consensus recommendations for managing asymptomatic persistent non-virus non-alcohol related elevation of aminotransferase levels: suggestions for diagnostic procedures and monitoring.

A persistent increase in non-virus non-alcohol related aminotransferase levels can have multiple causes, which differ in terms of prevalence and clinical importance. In the general population, the most frequent cause is non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis, which can evolve into steato-hepatitis and cirrhosis. The treatment for steatosis and non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis consists of modifying lifestyles, whereas the effectiveness of drug treatment remains to be determined. Other much less frequent (yet not rare) causes of persistent non-virus non-alcohol related elevations in aminotransferase leve

Setting targets for universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care for injecting drug users (IDUs): towards consensus and improved guidance.

Scaling-up access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care for injecting drug users (IDUs) has been frustrated by the lack of a framework, indicators and agreed targets for interventions specifically targeting IDUs. Major progress in this regard has been achieved with the recent development of a joint Technical Guide for Countries to Set Targets for Universal Access to HIV Prevention, Treatment and Care for Injecting Drug Users and related technical consultations. This guide provides technical guidance to countries on setting ambitious, but achievable national targets for scaling-up towards

Fingerprinting of mixed bacterial strains and BIOLOG gram-negative (GN) substrate communities by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence-PCR (ERIC-PCR).

PCR-based genomic fingerprinting by use of enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus primers (ERIC-PCR) was evaluated for its use in fingerprinting DNA of mixed Gram-negative bacterial strains and BIOLOG Gram-negative (GN) microplate substrate communities. ERIC-PCR fingerprints of six different pure bacterial strains and a combined mixture of the strains were compared with fingerprints obtained by two more established methods: amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) and random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis (RAPD-PCR). The ERIC-PCR fingerprint of the mixed strains was hi

Opinions regarding the diagnosis and management of venous thromboembolic disease. ACCP Consensus Committee on Pulmonary Embolism. American College of Chest Physicians.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this consensus report was to address clinically relevant questions related to the diagnosis and management of acute pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis. BACKGROUND: Physicians are often forced to make decisions about the diagnosis and management of pulmonary thromboembolism even though there are only limited data to guide them. METHODS: We assessed the relevant literature regarding clinical trials according to levels of evidence. The data on which the opinions of the committee were made were sparse. The consensus opinions, therefore, were often based on expe

AI-Based Wound Measurement in a Telemedicine-Style Workflow: Agreement With In-Person Reference Measurements Compared With Individual Physicians and Expert Consensus.

Accurate wound size measurement is essential for monitoring healing, yet visual estimates are variable-especially in telemedicine-style assessments. To compare AI-based wound size estimates with physician image-based estimates using in-person measurements as ground truth (GT). In a prospective dataset of bedside wound photographs (Dec 2024-Apr 2025), GT height and width were measured in person by two experienced raters using a calibrated ruler. A set of ArUco markers placed adjacent to the wound at the same skin level enabled image-based retrieval of real-world size information. Five physician

How to do echo for patent foramen ovale: Pre, Intra and Postprocedure: A Consensus Statement of the Italian Society of Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Imaging.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a congenital heart anomaly potentially responsible of paradoxical embolism, enhancing the risk of stroke, especially in young adults. Contrast-enhanced (c-) echocardiography associated with c-transcranial doppler is the method of choice for PFO diagnosis. Transesophageal echocardiography plays a pivotal role for PFO's anatomical characterization; besides, it serves for guidance during percutaneous closure. A multimodality imaging approach is advised for evaluating residual shunt after percutaneous procedures.

Inter-society consensus on the management of acute bloody diarrhea and shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli infection in the molecular microbiology era.

Hemolytic uremic syndrome associated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC-HUS) infection is a major individual and public health challenge, and the leading cause of acute kidney injury in children. In Western countries, HUS complicates about 15% of STEC infections, which are responsible for acute bloody diarrhea (ABD) in at least 6–7% of cases in children (rising to over 15% during late summer). The widespread use of molecular microbiology techniques enables the diagnosis of STEC infection before HUS onset in an increasing number of patients, creating a potential window of prevent
