Cardiovascular aspects of COVID-19.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is primarily a pulmonary disease, but also affects the cardiovascular system in multiple ways. In this review, we will summarise and put into perspective findings and debates relating to the diverse aspects of cardiovascular involvement of COVID-19. We will review evidence for the role of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), the risk of pre-existing cardiovascular disease in COVID-19 susceptibility and course, and the mechanism of acute and long-term myocardial injury. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) uses membrane

Age-Dependent Differences in the Antiviral Response of the Respiratory Epithelium.

Age is an established risk factor for severe viral respiratory infections, yet the mechanisms driving increased severity of illness in infants and older adults remain incompletely understood. The respiratory epithelium is the primary target of viral infection and how it orchestrates the immune response may be a key determinant of clinical outcomes. The profound age-related difference in susceptibility to severe Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) brought increased attention to the epithelial response to viral infection in children and adults, adding significant data to the preexisting body of

Hyperglycemia and Cytopenias as Signs of SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant Infection in Preterm Infants.

Information regarding severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections in premature infants remains limited. Early in the pandemic, several studies reported that the risk of infection in infants was relatively small and that affected infants had a milder disease than what was seen in adults. Since the increase of the delta variant (SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617.2) within the population, there have been increased reports of more severe disease in infants. We present 3 cases of premature, very low birth weight infants with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection who presented with significant

The Role of Diabetes and Hyperglycemia on COVID-19 Infection Course-A Narrative Review.

It was previously reported that subjects with diabetes mellitus (DM) are more vulnerable to several bacterial or viral infections. In the era of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, it is reasonable to wonder whether DM is a risk factor for COVID-19 infection, too. It is not yet clear whether DM increases the risk for contracting COVID-19 infection or not. However, patients with DM when infected are more likely to develop severe or even fatal COVID-19 disease course than patients without DM. Certain characteristics of DM patients may also deteriorate prognosis. On the other hand, hype

BCG vaccination and the risk of COVID 19: A possible correlation.

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is currently used to prevent tuberculosis infection. The vaccine was found to enhance resistance to certain types of infection including positive sense RNA viruses. The current COVID-19 pandemic is caused by positive sense RNA, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). A higher mortality rate of COVID-19 patients was reported in countries where BCG vaccination is not routinely administered, when compared to the vaccinated ones. We hypothesized that BCG vaccine may control SARS-CoV2 infection via modulating the monocyte immune response.

The coronavirus nucleocapsid protein is ADP-ribosylated.

ADP-ribosylation is a common post-translational modification, although how it modulates RNA virus infection is not well understood. While screening for ADP-ribosylated proteins during coronavirus (CoV) infection, we detected a ~55kDa ADP-ribosylated protein in mouse hepatitis virus (MHV)-infected cells and in virions, which we identified as the viral nucleocapsid (N) protein. The N proteins of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-CoV were also ADP-ribosylated. ADP-ribosylation of N protein was also obse

Upper respiratory infection of lactating sows with transmissible gastroenteritis virus following contact exposure to infected piglets.

Ten breeding sows were left in direct contact with their newborn piglets that had been experimentally infected with transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) virus. All sows became infected with the virus. The sows developed fever and showed mild clinical signs of the disease for a few days. The sows excreted virus in the nasal secretion, feces, and milk during the acute febrile phase of illness. Virus was isolated from the nasal secretion of one sow as early as 20 hours after contact exposure to the infected piglets. At necropsy, the virus was more frequently isolated from the tissues of the upper

Nationwide trends in the use of antitussive agents in Japan before, during, and after the COVID-19 Pandemic: A descriptive study using a National Database.

Antitussive agents are widely prescribed in Japan regardless of the underlying disease, which contradicts clinical guidelines. External factors such as the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent changes may have influenced these prescription patterns; however, the extent remains unclear. In this descriptive study, we used NDB Open Data (2018-2022) to analyze the annual prescription volumes, costs, and drug categories for antitussive agents (including centrally acting and Kampo medicines) and medications for chronic diseases. Prescriptions for both centrally acting agents and Kampo medicines remai

Repurposing disulfiram: An innovative inhibitory approach against a broad spectrum of viruses.

Disulfiram (DSF), an FDA-approved therapeutic agent for alcohol dependence, has recently attracted considerable interest due to its broad-spectrum inhibitory effects against various viruses. Increasing evidence suggests that DSF can inhibit viral replication through two major mechanisms: the inhibition of viral protein catalytic activity and the ejection of Zn2+ from viral proteins. This review comprehensively summarized the molecular mechanisms underlying DSF's antiviral activity against viruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), hepatitis C virus (HCV), inf

Behcet's disease-related panuveitis following COVID-19 vaccination: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Behcet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory disorder known for various symptoms, including oral and genital ulcers and ocular inflammation. Panuveitis, a severe eye condition, is rare as the first sign of BD. CASE SUMMARY: We present an unusual case of a 30-year-old man who developed panuveitis after receiving the mRNA-based coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine (Moderna). Laboratory tests ruled out infections, but he had a positive HLA-B51 result and a history of genital ulcer and oral ulcers, leading to a BD diagnosis. Treatment with corticosteroids improved his condition. In

Inhaled nitric oxide: can it serve as a savior for COVID-19 and related respiratory and cardiovascular diseases?

Nitric oxide (NO), as an important gaseous medium, plays a pivotal role in the human body, such as maintaining vascular homeostasis, regulating immune-inflammatory responses, inhibiting platelet aggregation, and inhibiting leukocyte adhesion. In recent years, the rapid prevalence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has greatly affected the daily lives and physical and mental health of people all over the world, and the therapeutic efficacy and resuscitation strategies for critically ill patients need to be further improved and perfected. Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) is a selective pulmonary v

Host Cell Entry and Neutralization Sensitivity of SARS-CoV-2 Lineages B.1.620 and R.1.

The spike (S) protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) facilitates viral entry into host cells and is the key target for neutralizing antibodies. The SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.620 carries fifteen mutations in the S protein and is spread in Africa, the US and Europe, while lineage R.1 harbors four mutations in S and infections were observed in several countries, particularly Japan and the US. However, the impact of the mutations in B.1.620 and R.1 S proteins on antibody-mediated neutralization and host cell entry are largely unknown. Here, we report that these mutati

A Rare Case of Mandibular Mucormycosis in a Post-COVID-19 Patient.

Mucormycosis or black fungus is one of the most lethal, progressing, and rapid form of deep fungal infections in humans which is caused by group of molds called mucormycetes. It is called black fungus infection due to black nasal discharges and black patches around nose found in the initial stage. The most common variety is rhino-orbito-cerebral-maxillary, although there are also pulmonary, gastrointestinal, cutaneous, and disseminated variations. In recent years, mucormycosis has become increasingly prevalent in immunocompromised individuals, with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection

Cyanobacteria and Algae-Derived Bioactive Metabolites as Antiviral Agents: Evidence, Mode of Action, and Scope for Further Expansion; A Comprehensive Review in Light of the SARS-CoV-2 Outbreak.

COVID-19-a severe acute respiratory syndrome disease caused by coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-has recently attracted global attention, due to its devastating impact, to the point of being declared a pandemic. The search for new natural therapeutic drugs is mandatory, as the screening of already-known antiviral drugs so far has led to poor results. Several species of marine algae have been reported as sources of bioactive metabolites with potential antiviral and immunomodulatory activities, among others. Some of these bioactive metabolites might be able to act as antimicrobial drugs and also agains

MIS-C and co-infection with P. vivax and P. falciparum in a child: a clinical conundrum.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic represents an unprecedented global health challenge. Many COVID-19 symptoms are similar to symptoms that can occur in other infections. Malaria should always be considered in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection returning from endemic areas. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the first case of multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) and Plasmodium vivax-falciparum and SARS-CoV2 coinfection in children. Despite clearance of parassitaemia and a negative COVID-19 nasopharyngeal PCR, the patient's clinical conditions worsened. The Wo

Acute Myocarditis Following Vaccination With the First Dose of the mRNA-1273 Vaccine.

Viral infections are a common cause of acute myocarditis. However, vaccines including influenza and smallpox have also been rarely implicated. Recently, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines have been associated with acute myocarditis. We describe a case of acute myocarditis in a 19-year-old male 2 days after the initial dose of the COVID-19 mRNA-1273 vaccine. He presented with chest pain radiating to his left arm and bilateral shoulders. COVID, influenza, coxsackie, respiratory syncytial virus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were negative. Electrocardiogram revealed diffuse S

Expert Opinion on Usage of Pidotimod in Adult Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: An Indian Perspective.

India has a disproportionately high burden of acute and chronic pulmonary diseases. In India, 65 million suffer from non-communicable respiratory diseases. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) had worsened the situation. Patients affected with COVID-19 with a previous history of comorbidities, such as COPD and chronic lung diseases, had the worst prognosis, resulting in adverse outcomes, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and pneumonia. Immune modulation strategies have since gained a lot of traction amongst practitioners. Modulation of the immune syste
