Giant maxillary cyst with intrasinusal evolution.

Giant maxillary cysts deserve one's attention, mainly because of all the complication they can originate, such as facial aesthetic changes, jaw fractures, infections and occasional but the most severe one the neoplasia of its epithelium. Here we present the case of a 51-year-old man who was sent to the Clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Timisoara, Romania, because of a facial asymmetry due to the hyper-dimension of the right superior genian and labial region, consecutive to the volume growth of the subjacent alveolar process. The clinical and paraclinical investigations, especially th

A hiding in the lining: painful pericardial cyst.

A pericardial cyst is a rare and benign congenital malformation, usually discovered in the third or fourth decade of life. Its clinical presentation is variable, as it may be asymptomatic or present with chest pain, shortness of breath, or rarely with cardiac tamponade and arrhythmias. We present an interesting case of a woman presenting with chest pain who was found to have a pericardial cyst.

Lumbar discal cyst in an elite athlete.

Our patient, a 22-year-old starting wide receiver for an NCAA Division I football team, presented with low back pain and sciatica. A lumbar-spine MRI without contrast demonstrated findings suspicious for discal cyst. The patient was referred for surgery, and the lesion was resected. The rarity of discal cyst makes it difficult to diagnose because most radiologists are not aware of the entity. An organized approach to diagnosis can facilitate appropriate management.

Sciatica and claudication caused by ganglion cyst.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case that a ganglion cyst compressed the sciatic nerve and caused sciatica and claudication in a 51-year-old male. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Sciatica and claudication commonly occurs in spinal stenosis. To our knowledge, only 4 cases have been reported on sciatica resulting from posterior ganglion cyst of hip. METHODS: A 51-year-old male had a 2-month history of radiating pain on his right leg. He could only walk 20 to 30 m before stopping and standing to rest for 1 to 3 minutes. Interestingly, he was able to walk longer distances (ab

Choledochal cyst - presentation and treatment in an adult.

NONE DECLARED Choledochal cyst is a congenital cystic dilation of a part of bile duct that occurs most commonly in the main part of common bile duct. Diagnosis of choledochal cyst is concluded upon disproportionate expansion of extrahepatic bile duct. Symptom trias are: abdominal pain, jaundice and abdominal mass represent clinical guideline signs of diagnosis. Furthermore, hepato-biliary diseases in adults can conceal the primary condition. In addition to this, ultrasound, CT, MRI, cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), transhepatic percutane cholangiography (PTC) guide us for a detailed examinatio

Pilonidal cyst of the penis mimicking carcinoma.

Pilonidal sinus is a long-standing chronic inflammatory condition consisting of a sinus tract from the skin-lined orifice extending into subcutaneous tissue, with hairs attached to the wall of the tract and projecting outside of the opening. Penile location is rare, and differential diagnosis with severe balanoposthitis, epidermal cysts, and neoplasms can be difficult. We report a rare case of pilonidal cyst located between coronal sulcus and prepuce which, due to its ulcerated aspect and absence of a tract with projecting hairs, simulated a penile carcinoma.

Primary hydatid cyst of broad ligament.

Cystic lesions of the female pelvis are common. Clinically, symptomatic lesions are mostly ovarian in origin and neoplastic in nature. Considerable diagnostic dilemma may be encountered if clinical, radiological, and estimation of serum markers failed to classify the origin and nature of such cysts. One such exceptional case is being described where a 35-year-old female presented with a rapidly growing cystic mass in lower abdomen, clinically suspicious of malignancy. Investigations failed to identify the nature. On laparotomy, excision of the mass was done. Suprisingly histopathological exami

Hydatid cyst of spleen: a diagnostic challenge.

Although splenic involvement alone in hydatid disease is very rare, spleen is the third most common organ involved in hydatid disease. The rarity of splenic hydatid disease poses a diagnostic challenge for clinicians, particularly in non-endemic areas. As the hydatid cyst can present as a simple cyst without having the classic serological and imaging features, and later can lead to life-threatening complications like anaphylaxis, hydatid disease of spleen should be considered in differential in every patient in endemic areas with cystic lesion of spleen until proved otherwise. The author used

Cervicofacial actinomycosis mimicking sebaceous cyst.

Actinomycosis is a rare, torpid, suppurative and chronic granulomatous infection caused by a Gram-positive organism that was initially thought to be a fungus. These organisms normally live as commensals in the human oral cavity, respiratory and digestive tracts, but become invasive when they gain access to the subcutaneous tissue through a musosal lesion, the triggering events being dental caries, dental manipulation and maxillofacial trauma. It is often misdiagnosed as it can mimic numerous infectious and non-infectious diseases. We describe an interesting case of cervical actinomycosis that

A Rathke's Cleft Cyst Presenting with Apoplexy.

The occurrence of symptomatic pituitary hemorrhage into a Rathke's cleft cyst (RCC) is extremely rare. The author reports an interesting case of intra- and suprasellar RCC presented with features of pituitary apoplexy. This 62-year-old woman suffered acute headache, mental confusion, and partial hypopituitarism. The characteristics of the magnetic resonance imaging seemed most compatible with a hemorrhagic pituitary adenoma. Transsphenoidal drainage of the cyst contents confirmed the diagnosis of hemorrhagic RCC and resolved the symptoms. All published data on this rare clinical entity are ext

Never underestimate simple splenic cyst.

Although splenic involvement alone in hydatid disease is very rare, spleen is the third common organ involved in hydatid disease. It is endemic in cattle rearing areas but occurs worldwide. The rarity of splenic hydatid disease poses diagnostic challenge for clinicians. The case is presented as the investigation in the beginning which induced confusion among experienced clinicians but subsequently diagnosis of splenic hydatid cyst with peritoneal dissemination was confirmed by laparoscopy and histopathological examination. Hydatid disease of spleen should be considered in differential in every

Giant epidermal cyst of the periorbital area.

Epidermal cysts of periorbit and intraorbit are common problems to ophthalmologists, but giant periorbital epidermal cyst is exceedingly rare. Only a few cases have been reported previously. A 62-year-old woman presented with a large right periorbital area mass that resulted in right upper lid complete ptosis and severe gaze limitation in all directions. Visual acuity of right eye was finger count (20/2000). Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a bone-destroying mass involving the lateral side of the right superior orbital limb. Complete surgical removal was performed th

Primary hydatid cyst in an unexpected localization.

Echinococcal disease remains a problem within some endemic areas. It usually involves the liver and lungs, but any other organ can potentially be involved. Soft tissue hydatid disease without liver and lung involvement was reported in 2.3 % of patients. This paper presents a case of 35-year-old male patient who was referred to our department with a 9x9x6cm hydatid cyst at psoas muscle. The rarity of the musculoskeletal disease renders the decision making on the favorable treatment quite difficult. Conservative treatment, complete excision and simple drainage have all been suggested as adequate
