[Isolation of Cystic Echinococcosis Causative Agents of Echinococcus equinus and Echinococcus ortleppi Species from Humans in the Central Anatolia Region of Türkiye].

Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu strico is neglected in Türkiye despite being one of the common diseases due to agriculture being at the forefront, low socioeconomic status and unhygienic animal slaughter. Considering the morbidity, mortality, and difficulties in treatment, more studies and precautions are needed regarding this disease. In this study, it was aimed to genotype Echinococcus isolated from CE patients in the Central Anatolia region. DNA isolation from tissue samples taken from 60 CE patients was performed using the QIAamp DNA FFPE tissue kit. Cyto

Reassessing Stephanofilaria stilesi dermatitis in cattle, with characterization of molecular markers for confirming diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Stephanofilaria stilesi is a vector-borne filarioid nematode of cattle in North America that is transmitted via the hematophagous horn fly (Haematobia irritans) intermediate host. Despite being relatively common, little attention has been given to a thorough description of S. stilesi lesions and the potential integration of pathological and molecular diagnostic findings to confirm infection. METHODS: To characterize the cutaneous lesions caused by S. stilesi in cattle (Bos taurus taurus and Bos taurus indicus), skin of the ventral abdominal midline was collected from 22 animals du

The potential for zoonotic malaria transmission in five areas of Indonesia inhabited by non-human primates.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia is home to many species of non-human primates (NHPs). Deforestation, which is still ongoing in Indonesia, has substantially reduced the habitat of NHPs in the republic. This has led to an intensification of interactions between NHPs and humans, which opens up the possibility of pathogen spillover. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of malarial parasite infections in NHPs in five provinces of Indonesia in 2022. Species of the genus Anopheles that can potentially transmit malarial pathogens to humans were also investigated. METHODS: An epidemiolog

Synergistic Effects of Vitis vinifera L. and Centella asiatica against CCl4-Induced Liver Injury in Mice.

Liver injury can be acute or chronic, resulting from a variety of factors, including viral hepatitis, drug overdose, idiosyncratic drug reaction, or toxins, while the progression of pathogenesis in the liver rises due to the involvement of numerous cytokines and growth factor mediators. Thus, the identification of more effective biomarker-based active phytochemicals isolated from medicinal plants is a promising strategy to protect against CCl4-induced liver injury. Vitis vinifera L. (VE) and Centella asiatica (CE) are well-known medicinal plants that possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant p

Population genetic structure and evolutionary genetics of Anopheles sinensis based on knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations and mtDNA-COII gene in China-Laos, Thailand-Laos, and Cambodia-Laos borders.

BACKGROUND: Vector control is still a pivotal method for preventing malaria, and its potency is weakened by the increasing resistance of vectors to chemical insecticides. As the most abundant and vital malaria vector in Southeast Asia, the chemical insecticide resistance status in Anopheles sinensis remains elusive in Laos, which makes it imperative to evaluate the true nature of chemical insecticide resistance-associated genetic mutations in An. sinensis in Laos. METHODS: Adult An. sinensis were collected from three border regions in Laos. DNA was extracted from individual mosquitoes. PCR am

Heroin Addiction Induces Axonal Transport Dysfunction in the Brain Detected by In Vivo MRI.

Heroin is a highly addictive drug that causes axonal damage. Here, manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) was used to dynamically monitor axonal transport at different stages of heroin addiction. Rat models of heroin addiction (HA) and prolonged heroin addiction (PHA) were established by injecting rats with heroin at different stages. Heroin-induced learning and memory deficits were evaluated in the Morris water maze (MWM), and MEMRI was used to dynamically evaluate axonal transport in the olfactory pathway. The expression of proteins related to axonal structure and function was

Combining deep sequencing and conventional molecular approaches reveals broad diversity and distribution of fleas and Bartonella in rodents and shrews from Arctic and Subarctic ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella are intracellular bacteria that are transmitted via animal scratches, bites and hematophagous arthropods. Rodents and their associated fleas play a key role in the maintenance of Bartonella worldwide, with > 22 species identified in rodent hosts. No studies have addressed the occurrence and diversity of Bartonella species and vectors for small mammals in Arctic and Subarctic ecosystems, which are increasingly impacted by invasive species and climate change. METHODS: In this study, we characterized the diversity of rodent fleas using conventional PCR targeting the mitoch

Rescue of thyroid cells from antibody induced cell death via induction of autophagy.

BACKGROUND: Graves' disease (GD) is associated with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor (TSHR) antibodies of variable bioactivity. We have previously characterized "neutral" TSHR antibodies (N-TSHR-Abs) that bind to the hinge region of the TSHR ectodomain. We showed that an N-TSHR monoclonal antibody (mAb) failed to induce any G proteins to sustain survival signaling and lead to excessive stress and apoptosis. Furthermore, the addition of TSH, or the antioxidant N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC), rescued N-TSHR-mAb-induced apoptotic death. However, the detailed mechanisms of this rescue remaine

Diversity of tsetse flies and trypanosome species circulating in the area of Lake Iro in southeastern Chad.

BACKGROUND: African trypanosomiases are vector-borne diseases that affect humans and livestock in sub-Saharan Africa. Although data have been collected on tsetse fauna as well as trypanosome infections in tsetse flies and mammals in foci of sleeping sickness in Chad, the situation of tsetse fly-transmitted trypanosomes remains unknown in several tsetse-infested areas of Chad. This study was designed to fill this epidemiological knowledge gap by determining the tsetse fauna as well as the trypanosomes infecting tsetse flies in the area of Lake Iro in southeastern Chad. METHODS: Tsetse flies we

Non-coding Regions of Mitochondrial DNA and the cox1 Gene Reveal Genetic Variability Among Local Belarusian Populations of the Causative Agent of Cercarial Dermatitis, Bird Schistosome Trichobilharzia szidati (Digenea: Schistosomatidae).

INTRODUCTION: The cercariae of avian blood flukes Trichobilharzia szidati (Digenea, Schistosomatidae) are known to cause cercarial allergic dermatitis ("swimmer's itch") in humans. Global epidemics can have significant impacts on local tourism-related economies in recreational areas. Little is known about the genetic polymorphism of the parasite population, or about the variability of the non-coding regions of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and the possibility of using this as a genetic marker. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The T. szidati cercariae were collected over 7 years from 33 naturally infected L

Profiling of RNA Viruses in Biting Midges (Ceratopogonidae) and Related Diptera from Kenya Using Metagenomics and Metabarcoding Analysis.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) cause enormous health burden worldwide, as they account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases and over 700,000 deaths each year. A significant number of these VBDs are caused by RNA virus pathogens. Here, we used metagenomics and metabarcoding analysis to characterize RNA viruses and their insect hosts among biting midges from Kenya. We identified a total of 15 phylogenetically distinct insect-specific viruses. These viruses fall into six families, with one virus falling in the recently proposed negevirus taxon. The six virus families include Partitiviridae,

α-Bisabolol, a Dietary Bioactive Phytochemical Attenuates Dopaminergic Neurodegeneration through Modulation of Oxidative Stress, Neuroinflammation and Apoptosis in Rotenone-Induced Rat Model of Parkinson's disease.

Rotenone (ROT), a plant-derived pesticide is a well-known environmental neurotoxin associated with causation of Parkinson's disease (PD). ROT impairs mitochondrial dysfunction being mitochondrial complex-I (MC-1) inhibitor and perturbs antioxidant-oxidant balance that contributes to the onset and development of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in PD. Due to the scarcity of agents to prevent the disease or to cure or halt the progression of symptoms of PD, the focus is on exploring agents from naturally occurring dietary phytochemicals. Among numerous phytochemicals, α-Bisabolol (BSB), n

Evaluation of the relative roles of the Tabanidae and Glossinidae in the transmission of trypanosomosis in drug resistance hotspots in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) and tabanids (Diptera: Tabanidae) are haematophagous insects of medical and veterinary importance due to their respective role in the biological and mechanical transmission of trypanosomes. Few studies on the distribution and relative abundance of both families have been conducted in Mozambique since the country's independence. Despite Nicoadala, Mozambique, being a multiple trypanocidal drug resistance hotspot no information regarding the distribution, seasonality or infection rates of fly-vectors are available. This is, however, crucial to unde

Dexamethasone-Induced Liver Enlargement Is Related to PXR/YAP Activation and Lipid Accumulation but Not Hepatocyte Proliferation.

Dexamethasone (Dex), a widely prescribed anti-inflammatory drug, was reported to induce liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) in clinical practice and in animal models. However, the underlying mechanisms are not elucidated. Dex is a known activator of pregnane X receptor (PXR). Yes-associated protein (YAP) has been implicated in chemically induced liver enlargement. Here, the roles of PXR and YAP pathways were investigated in Dex-induced hepatomegaly. Upregulation of PXR downstream proteins, including cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A11, 2B10, and organic anion transporter polypeptide 2 (OATP2), indicated P
