Evaluation of molecular techniques to visceral leishmaniasis detection in asymptomatic patients: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a systemic and neglected parasitic disease. Its main symptoms are fever, splenomegaly with or without hepatomegaly, and anemia, however, most individuals remain asymptomatic. Due to the lack of a gold standard and the limitations of current diagnostic techniques, where parasitology is ethically unfeasible for individuals without symptoms and serological tests do not differentiate between past and present disease, molecular methodologies are the most suitable. AREAS COVERED: We performed a systematic review analyzing the molecular techniques based o

Metabolomics Studies in Psoriatic Disease: A Review.

Metabolomics investigates a broad range of small molecules, allowing researchers to understand disease-related changes downstream of the genome and proteome in response to external environmental stimuli. It is an emerging technology that holds promise in identifying biomarkers and informing the practice of precision medicine. In this review, we summarize the studies that have examined endogenous metabolites in patients with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or mass spectrometry (MS) and were published through 26 January 2021. A standardized protocol wa

Extracellular Vesicles-Based Drug Delivery Systems: A New Challenge and the Exemplum of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma.

Research for the most selective drug delivery to tumors represents a fascinating key target in science. Alongside the artificial delivery systems identified in the last decades (e.g., liposomes), a family of natural extracellular vesicles (EVs) has gained increasing focus for their potential use in delivering anticancer compounds. EVs are released by all cell types to mediate cell-to-cell communication both at the paracrine and the systemic levels, suggesting a role for them as an ideal nano-delivery system. Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) stands out among currently untreatable tumors, al

Molecular genetics of meningiomas.

Comprehensive genomic studies of meningioma have offered important insights about the molecular mechanisms underlying this common brain tumor. The use of next-generation sequencing techniques has identified driver mutations in approximately 80% of benign sporadic lesions, as well as epigenetic, regulatory, and copy number events that are associated with formation and disease progression. The events described to date fall into five mutually exclusive molecular subgroups that correlate with tumor location and embryological origin. Importantly, these subgroups also carry implications for clinical

Modular Medical Imaging Agents Based on Azide-Alkyne Huisgen Cycloadditions: Synthesis and Pre-Clinical Evaluation of 18 F-Labeled PSMA-Tracers for Prostate Cancer Imaging.

Since the seminal contribution of Rolf Huisgen to develop the [3+2] cycloaddition of 1,3-dipolar compounds, its azide-alkyne variant has established itself as the key step in numerous organic syntheses and bioorthogonal processes in materials science and chemical biology. In the present study, the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition was applied for the development of a modular molecular platform for medical imaging of the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), using positron emission tomography. This process is shown from molecular design, through synthesis automation and in vit

Various aspects of sex and gender bias in biomedical research.

The main role of research in medicine is to provide relevant knowledge which, after successful translation to clinical practice, improves the quality of healthcare. The sex bias which is still present in the majority of research disciplines prefers male subjects despite legislation changes in the US grant agencies and European research programme Horizon 2020. Male subjects (cells, animals) still dominate in preclinical research and it has detrimental consequences for women's health and the quality of science. Opposite bias exists for data obtained mainly in animal models utilizing female subje
