BACKGROUND: Metal stents are not superior to conventional endoprostheses with respect to the incidence of recurrent dysphagia because of tumor ingrowth with uncovered stents and migration with their covered counterparts. BACKGROUND: BICAP tumor probe is a device that consists in an energy source and olives that deliver bipolar electricity. It can be used for the fulguration of esophageal tumors after endoscopic dilatation.
AIM: To report the experience in the treatment of malignant esophageal stenoses using the BICAP tumor probe.

The aim of this prospective randomized trial was to compare the symptomatic effects of two different regimens of palliative radiotherapy for lung cancer. OBJECTIVES: Patients with disorders of the upper oesophagus often present with swallowing impairment. We evaluated our results in 34 patients treated with cricopharyngeal myotomy.
METHODS: Etiologies were muscular in 11 patients, neurogenic in 10, cricopharyngeal achalasia in 7 and could not be ascertained in 6. A 4 to 6 cm myotomy of the cricopharyngeal muscle and the lower part of the oesophageal constrictor muscle was performed. Incision was made to the mucosa. Outcome was evaluated in terms of functional improvement, weight gain and post-operative mode of food intake.

The use of autogenous fat for augmentation of the paralyzed vocal fold is a promising substitute for alternate injectable material such as Teflon (polytef paste, polytetrafluoroethylene; Ethicon) and Gelfoam (absorbable gelatin sponge; Upjohn). Long-term histologic evaluation of fat grafts to the larynx has not previously been reported in the literature. We present a case report of autogenous fat augmentation of a paralyzed vocal fold with documentation of persistent fat graft present 5 months after transplant.

Ingestion of a corrosive agent results in a life-threatening clinical condition that requires emergency intensive care and often surgical intervention. Overgrowth of an esophageal prosthesis by cancer is a late complication of insertion which presents a difficult management problem. We have treated 14 such patients; 9 had Celestin tubes and 5 Atkinson tubes in situ for a median of 7 months. The median patient age was 75 years; 3 had squamous cell carcinomas and 11 adenocarcinomas; 12 were at the lowest thoracic esophagus or cardia, and 2 were anastomotic. Postoperative swallowing problems were investigated in 20 patients who had undergone various degrees of surgical resection for oral cancer.
