Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy that primarily affects the gastrointestinal tract. The underlying pathophysiology of FPIES has yet to be fully elucidated; however, FPIES is believed to be secondary to intestinal inflammation after exposure to a food antigen, which thereby leads to increased permeability and fluid shifting into the intestinal lumen. FPIES is categorized into acute and chronic forms. Acute FPIES is characterized by repetitive vomiting that occurs 1-4 hours after food ingestion. Severe vomiting may progress to dehydration, le

A Histological and Clinical Evaluation of Plasma as a Graft-holding Solution and Its Efficacy in Terms of Hair Growth and Graft Survival.

BACKGROUND: There is a time lag between hair follicle harvesting and implantation; during this time, hair follicles have ischemic injury. We need a holding media or a solution to minimize or neutralize ischemic injury. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate plasma as a graft-holding solution in terms of its efficacy in hair growth and hair graft survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A split-scalp study was carried out. The left side was designated as the control area (Group A), where graft implanted was kept in Ringer's lactate (RL), and the right side behaved as the test area

Unusual case of polyarthritis and hepatorenal syndrome associated with Leptospira interrogans infection in a dog: A case report.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by spirochetal bacterial of the genus Leptospira affecting virtually all mammals. The infection has a broad range of effects, from mild clinical manifestation to multiple organ failure, and ultimately death. A 5-months-old male unvaccinated dog was admitted to the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital presenting dullness, dehydration, jaundiced mucous, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and hyporexia. Microscopic agglutination test (MAT) detected serological titers of 1:1.600 for serogroup Canicola. After five days of monitoring by the medical team he devel

A TaqMan probe-based real-time PCR to differentiate porcine epidemic diarrhea virus virulent strains from attenuated vaccine strains.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is an important pathogen causing severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and death in sucking piglets. Attenuated vaccines have been used widely in sows in order to protect piglets through passive lactogenic immunity. Rapid and sensitive detection methods for differentiating attenuated vaccine strains from virulent ones are essential and practical in PEDV prevention and control. Based on the deletion mutation in ORF3 gene sequence, a TaqMan probe-based real-time quantitative PCR (TaqMan qPCR) was developed to distinguish PEDV virulent strains from

Potential benefit of a thoracic squeeze technique in two newborn calves delivered by caesarean section.

Case History: Two calves delivered following elective caesarean section showed behaviour typical of neonatal maladjustment syndrome described in foals, i.e., indifference to environmental stimuli, lack of affinity for the dam, failure to find the udder, refusal to suck, aimless wandering or motionless standing. Calves were subjected to a clinical examination immediate after delivery and there were no signs of defects, illness, pain, dehydration, hypoxia, acidaemia or other causes for the unresponsive behaviour.Clinical Findings and Treatment: Both calves were subjected to the thoracic squeeze

Retinoic acid attenuates contrast-induced acute kidney injury in a miniature pig model.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) has been the third leading cause of hospital-acquired AKI. Retinoic acid (RA), the main derivative of vitamin A, has preventative and therapeutic effects in ischemia-reperfusion-AKI and UUO models, but little is known about its effects on CI-AKI. This study aimed to explore the effects of RA on CI-AKI as well as the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: We established a new miniature pig model of CI-AKI by catheterizing the external jugular vein and injecting a single dose of iohexol after dehydration. Bun, Scr, serum and urinary RBP and β-M

Integrated Transcriptomic and Proteomic Analysis of Human Eccrine Sweat Glands Identifies Missing and Novel Proteins.

The eccrine sweat gland is an exocrine gland that is involved in the secretion of sweat for control of temperature. Malfunction of the sweat glands can result in disorders such as miliaria, hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis. Understanding the transcriptome and proteome of sweat glands is important for understanding their physiology and role in diseases. However, no systematic transcriptome or proteome analysis of sweat glands has yet been reported. Here, we isolated eccrine sweat glands from human skin by microdissection and performed RNA-seq and proteome analysis. In total, ∼138,000 transcripts

Anodal tDCS of the swallowing motor cortex for treatment of dysphagia in multiple sclerosis: a pilot open-label study.

Swallowing difficulties are a common symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). The early detection and treatment of dysphagia is critical to prevent complications, including poor nutrition, dehydration, and lung infections. Recently, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been proven to be effective in ameliorating swallowing problems in stroke patients. In this pilot study, we aimed to assess safety and efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in the treatment of dysphagia in MS patients. We screened 30 patients by using the 10-item DYsphagia in MUltiple Sclerosis (DYM

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis presenting with multifocal intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage: A case report.

RATIONALE: Multifocal cerebral hemorrhage refers to the cerebral hemorrhage in 2 or more lesions at the same time or 48 h in the brain caused by various causes, which has an acute onset, high mortality rate, and poor clinical treatment effect. Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is caused by the direct flow of blood into the subarachnoid cavity due to the rupture of the diseased vessels at the base or surface of the brain. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) affects approximately 5 people per million and accounts for approximately 1% of all stroke events. CVST with both SAH and multifocal intrac

A new copper(II) supramolecular coordination polymer and a dinuclear compound with multifunctional 2-amino-5-sulfobenzoic acid and flexible N-donor ligands: synthesis, structure and characterization.

Multifunctional 2-amino-5-sulfobenzoic acid (H2afsb) can exhibit a variety of roles during the construction of supramolecular coordination polymers. The pendant carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid and amino groups could not only play a role in directing bonding but could also have the potential to act as hydrogen-bond donors and acceptors, resulting in extended high-dimensional supramolecular networks. Two new CuII coordination compounds, namely catena-poly[[[diaquacopper(II)]-μ-1,6-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)hexane-κ2N4:N4'] bis(3-amino-4-carboxybenzenesulfonate) dihydrate], {[Cu(C10H16N6)2(H2O)2](

Pre-operative haemodynamic monitoring and resuscitation in hip fracture patients: Protocol for a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: In a frail patient group often suffering from dehydration, hip fracture is potentially fatal partly because of the blood loss and thus deteriorated circulation. An important goal for haemodynamic monitoring and resuscitation is early detection of insufficient tissue perfusion. "The peripheral perfusion index" reflects changes in peripheral perfusion and blood volume. We hypothesize that hip fracture patients are hypovolaemic with poor peripheral perfusion and accordingly respond to controlled fluid resuscitation. The peripheral perfusion index might reflect restricted tissue perfus

Renal injury in pediatric anorexia nervosa: a retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Although primarily a mental health disorder, anorexia nervosa (AN) has many physical consequences. Among them, the consequences on kidney function are often underestimated. We evaluated renal function in adolescent AN inpatients and investigated the correlation between the GFR and intrinsic patient characteristics. METHODS: A single-center retrospective study was conducted on 51 patients hospitalized for the restrictive type of AN in 2013. Data were divided into: (1) medical history of AN; (2) growth parameters and vital signs upon admission; and (3) blood tests. The glomerular filtr

From the Cover: Drug-Induced Taste Disorders in Clinical Practice and Preclinical Safety Evaluation.

More than 200 medications can induce taste disorders in patients. They not only reduce quality of life for those affected, but can lead to malnutrition, severe dehydration and difficulty in maintaining a therapeutic regimen. Nevertheless, the impact of drug candidates on taste is rarely evaluated in preclinical toxicology studies during the early stage of drug development. Moreover, knowledge about how to investigate these adverse effects is scarce in the toxicology field. Here, we discuss the clinical status of drug-induced taste disorders in patients, with the goal of providing toxicologists

Urinary tract stone development in patients with myelodysplasia subjected to augmentation cystoplasty.

Patients with myelodysplasia who have undergone augmentation cystoplasty are at risk for urinary tract stones. We sought to determine the incidence and risk factors for stone development in this population. The charts of 40 patients with myelodysplasia who have undergone augmentation cystoplasty were reviewed. None had a prior history of urinary tract stones. All patients were seen on an annual basis with plain abdominal imaging, renal ultrasonography, and laboratory testing. Statistical analysis included a multivariable bootstrap resampling method and Student's t-test. Fifteen (37.5%) patient

[Effect of Preoperative Oral Rehydration on the Hypotension during Spinal Anesthesia.].

BACKGROUND: Preoperative dehydration is one of risk factors of hypotension during spinal anesthesia (SA). We hypothesized that preoperative oral rehy- dration (POR) may help prevent hypotension during SA. METHODS: After obtaining approval from the ethics committee, patients who underwent surgery twice (urological surgery or orthopedic surgery) within 6 months were enrolled in the study. For the first sur- gery, the patients fasted after midnight and were given an intravenous infusion (100 ml - hr-1) on the morning before the surgery (fasting group). Evaluation of who oral rehydration solution (ORS) and salt tablets in resuscitating adult patients with burns covering more than 15% of total body surface area (TBSA).

Intra-venous (IV) burn resuscitation is effective; nevertheless it has its disadvantages. WHO Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) has shown high effectiveness in treating dehydration. WHO-ORS, with salt supplement, seems to be suitable for burn resuscitation, where IV resuscitation is not available, feasible or possible. The objective of the study was to evaluate acute phase efficacy and safety, as well as limitations and complications of burn resuscitation using WHO-ORS and salt tablets. This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted in the Burn Unit, Suez Canal University Hospital, Isma
