Agreeableness as Predictor of Induced Scratching in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis: A Replication Study.

In patients with atopic dermatitis agreeableness and public self-consciousness have previously been shown to be significant predictors of induced scratching, while depression was significantly related to induced itch. This study aimed to replicate these findings. Itch and scratching were induced by videos of crawling insects or skin diseases. Induced itch was measured using a visual analogue scale. Scratching behavior was evaluated by two raters. Psychological variables were assessed using validated questionnaires. Induced scratching could be predicted significantly by agreeableness (corrected

Dupilumab progressively improves systemic and cutaneous abnormalities in patients with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Dupilumab is an IL-4 receptor α mAb inhibiting signaling of IL-4 and IL-13, key drivers of type 2-driven inflammation, as demonstrated by its efficacy in patients with atopic/allergic diseases. OBJECTIVE: This placebo-controlled, double-blind trial (NCT01979016) evaluated the efficacy, safety, and effects of dupilumab on molecular/cellular lesional and nonlesional skin phenotypes and systemic type 2 biomarkers of patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). METHODS: Skin biopsy specimens and blood were evaluated from 54 patients randomized 1:1 to weekly subcutaneous d

An independent relation of atopic dermatitis to exercise-induced wheezing in asthmatic children.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) and exercise-induced asthma (EIA) are common in asthmatic children, and exercise is the most common trigger other than infection for acute onset asthma attack in children. We examined whether AD is related to exercise-induced wheezing (EIW), some proxy for EIA. METHODS: Japanese version of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaires were used. For 12,405 asthmatic school children, AD was defined as itchy rash coming and going for at least 6 months at any time in the last 12 months with affecting places of flexural parts of bod

Interstitial granulomatous dermatitis in a patient with chronic hepatitis C and mixed cryoglobulinemia.

A 55-year-old man presented with a history of asymptomatic, bilateral, figurate dermatosis consisting of erythematous, annular, linear, andarciform, indurated nodules and plaques on the lateral walls of thorax, flanks, and hypogastrium. His medical history was positive for chronic hepatitis C. Skin biopsy was compatible with the diagnosisof interstitial granulomatous dermatitis. Additionalinvestigation revealed positive rheumatoid factor, antinuclear antibodies, and cryoglobulins. Thepatient started treatment with high-potency topical corticosteroid. After 12 weeks of treatment there was a par

Effect of isoliquiritigenin for the treatment of atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions in mice.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized with high heterogeneity. Recent studies have suggested that it is driven by both terminal keratinocyte differentiation defects and type 2 immune responses. The mainstay steroid topical therapy has severe side effect and new treatment is in demand. Isoliquiritigenin (ISLG) is a small phenolic bioactive molecule from licorice that has shown multiple pharmacological effects against cancer, inflammatory disorder, and cardiovascular diseases. ISLG was evaluated in AD-like lesion model induced by the repetitive applic

Pediatric Allergic Contact Dermatitis: Clinical and Epidemiological Study in a Tertiary Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Few epidemiological studies have investigated the incidence of allergic contact dermatitis in children. Underdiagnosis has been observed in some studies, with many cases in which the condition is not suspected clinically and patch tests are not performed. However, the prevalence of pediatric sensitization to allergens has been reported to be as high as 20%, and the diagnosis should therefore be contemplated as a possibility in this age group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the skin allergy database of the Dermatology Department of Consorcio Hospital

Autoimmune Progesterone Dermatitis: A Diagnosis to Consider in a Patient With Cyclical Cutaneous Eruptions.

Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis (APD) is a cyclical cutaneous reaction to progesterone, with symptoms that typically begin 3-10 days before the onset of menstrual flow and end 1-2 days into menses. The symptoms vary in severity from barely visible to anaphylaxis, but most often include an eczematous eruption, erythema multiforme, urticaria, folliculitis, and angioedema. This is a rare disorder with only a handful of documented cases. The pathogenesis of this condition remains unknown and significant variations in the presentation and severity of symptoms complicates its diagnosis. Treatment

Allergic contact dermatitis to methylisothiazolinone in hair care products: report of a case.

Eccrine spiradenoma (ES) typically presents as a solitary tender lesion. Multiple ES is a rare variant of ES and can present in a segmental, linear, blaschkoid, or zosteriform pattern. The etiology of multiple ES is unknown, but several theories have been suggested including a multipotent stem cell origin. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman with multiple painful ES in a zosteriform pattern on the mid-back and abdomen. Skin biopsy of a representative lesion demonstrated a circumscribed tumor nodule encapsulated by a fibrous capsule with diffuse dense basophilic proliferation located in t

Biologic Therapy for Atopic Dermatitis: Moving Beyond the Practice Parameter and Guidelines.

Atopic dermatitis (AD), a common chronic pruritic inflammatory skin disease, impacts the quality of life of patients and caregivers and has become a global health problem. It is increasingly recognized as a disease not only of children but also of adults who may have a persistent or relapsing course from childhood or who develop new-onset adult disease. Besides well-established atopic comorbidities, associations with a number of nonatopic comorbidities have been reported. AD is characterized by both immune dysregulation and epidermal barrier dysfunction. The findings that nonlesional skin in A

Incontinence-associated dermatitis in the critically ill patient: an intensive care perspective.

BACKGROUND: Incontinence-associated dermatitis is a skin disorder evident as a complication of incontinence. It is characterized by perineal, buttock and groin erythema and skin breakdown. Incontinence-associated dermatitis is a ubiquitous, nosocomial condition commonly present in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. Critically ill patients, by the nature of their critical illness and therapies used to treat their presenting condition, are commonly predisposed to faecal incontinence and are consequently at high risk of developing incontinence-associated dermatitis. However, this

Hypochlorous acid is antipruritic and anti-inflammatory in a mouse model of atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that topical hypochlorous acid (HOCl) formulations lead to relief of itch in human patients with atopic dermatitis; however, the specific antipruritic mechanism of action remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To confirm itch relief and reduction of lesions in a mouse model of atopic dermatitis and to elucidate possible HOCl's mode of action. METHODS: In this study, the effects of topical administration of HOCl hydrogel (0.05%) on atopic dermatitis-like lesions in NC/Nga mice model as well as in vitro effects of HOCl on dorsal root ganglia neurons and mouse bone marrow-

[A Case of Breast Cancer Associated with Dermatitis That Was Difficult to Differentiate from Dermatomyositis].

A 46-year-old woman visited our hospital with a chief complaint of a mass in the right breast. Breast ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic area with an indistinct border on the right breast, and right axillary lymph node swelling. A core needle biopsy revealed invasive ductal carcinoma, and the diagnosis was right breast cancer, cT2N2M0, Stage III A, HER2-enriched type. We administered 4 courses of FEC followed by weekly paclitaxel plus trastuzumab. After the treatment, she had eruption and erythema on the face, precordium and forearm. Though dermatomyositis associated cancer was suspected, a

Gastrointestinal Symptoms Increase the Burden of Illness in Dermatitis Herpetiformis: A Prospective Study.

Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is an extraintestinal manifestation of coeliac disease. The burden of illness in untreated coeliac disease is known to be considerable, but corresponding evidence for DH is lacking. In this study the burden of DH was evaluated prospectively in 52 patients newly diagnosed with DH using a study questionnaire and a validated Psychological General Well-Being (PGWB) questionnaire. The PGWB scores were compared with those of 110 healthy controls. Quality of life was significantly (p < 0.001) lower among patients with DH at the time of diagnosis, but after 1 year on a gl

Filaggrin mutations and Molluscum contagiosum skin infection in patients with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Although mutations in the filaggrin (FLG) gene have been reported to predispose patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) skin infection susceptibility, to date, the data reported in the literature are still controversial. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of FLG polymorphisms expression and risk of developing a concomitant Molluscum contagiosum sustained skin infection in the pediatric population with AD. METHODS: A total of 100 children with AD and 97 healthy children were enrolled. AD was diagnosed and assessed according to the validated European Task Force on Atopic Dermatitis. DNA
