Negative Emotions in Skin Disorders: A Systematic Review.

The main purpose of this study is to describe how negative emotions were investigated in the sphere of dermatological diseases, in order (1) to summarize literature trends about skin disorders and emotions, (2) to highlight any imbalances between the most studied and neglected emotions, (3) and to offer directions for future research. A computerized literature search provided 41 relevant and potentially eligible studies. Results showed that the study of emotions in skin disease is limited to Sadness/depression and Fear/anxiety. The emotions of Anger and Disgust have been poorly explored in emp

Substance use disorders and chronic itch.

Chronic pruritus is one dermatologic manifestation of an underlying substance use disorder. Recent literature has uncovered similarities between the general neurologic mechanisms of addiction and chronic itch, largely involving activation of the dopaminergic reward circuits within the brain and imbalances between mu and kappa opioid receptor activation. It is likely that the use of specific drugs, like central nervous system stimulants and opioids, results in further activation and imbalances within these pathways, perpetuating both addiction and pruritus simultaneously. Opioid users often pre

Anatomic Danger Zones of the Head and Neck.

BACKGROUND: Dermatologic procedures require a detailed understanding of surface anatomy to avoid complications. The head and neck region has prominent danger zones including nerves and vasculature that may be at risk during cutaneous surgery. A thorough understanding of these danger zones can help avoid complications that may lead to functional or cosmetic impairment. METHODS: The anatomic literature regarding the course of high-risk structures of the head and neck was reviewed. Structures deemed at risk during dermatologic procedures were included in the analysis. The final analysis focused

Psoriasis, biological drugs and Coronavirus Disease 2019: Real life experience of two Italian provinces.

On January 30, 2020, World Health Organization (WHO) stated that a new coronavirus disease outbreak [COronaVIrus Disease - 19 (COVID-19)] was an international public health emergency. Many news, often fake ones, about the derived pandemic rapidly spread along the media, thus leading many dermatological patients to identify as "risk category" and sometimes discontinue treatments by themselves. The Dermatology Units in Grosseto and Pordenone simultaneously carried out a data collection by remote-conducted visits, evaluating the incidence of COVID-19 in psoriatic patients. Only 1 patient (close c

Intravenous Immunoglobulins in a Series of 32 Rare and Recalcitrant Immune Dermatoses.

Intravenous immunoglobulins are an effective and well-tolerated treatment option for immune dermatological diseases. However, they are primarily used to treat diseases with a severe course and are mostly used off-label. Therefore, it is important to document case series on the use of intravenous immunoglobulins in rare immune dermatological diseases. We present here 32 patients who were treated with intravenous immunoglobulins in our clinic between 2015 and 2020. The indications were dermatomyositis, including amyopathic and paraneoplastic forms, as well as overlap-syndromes (n = 18), pemphigu

[Body dysmorphic disorder: Symptoms, prevalence, assessment and treatment].

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a relatively common disorder characterized by a preoccupation with nonexistent or slight defects in appearance. BDD usually begins during childhood or adolescence. The preoccupation with the perceived appearance defect typically occurs for many hours a day and is often followed by repetitive behaviours (for example mirror checking and skin picking). The weighted prevalence of BDD in a community sample is around 2%, but it is higher in clinical settings and in cosmetic and dermatological settings. BDD leads to significant distress and/or impairment at work or s

The impacts of oral health symptoms, hygiene, and diet on the development and severity of psoriasis.

Numerous studies have suggested a correlation between oral health, the oral microbiome, and various dermatologic conditions, particularly psoriasis. In this study, we utilize a specially designed questionnaire administered to 265 patients at The Ohio State University's dermatology clinics to explore the relationship between psoriasis and a combination of factors that included dietary habits, oral health, and oral hygiene practices. Age, family history of psoriasis, previous diagnosis of strep throat or rheumatoid arthritis, and oral pain or discomfort experienced within the last 12 months were

First Report of Concomitant Tinea Faciei and Pityriasis Folliculorum: A Dermatomicrobiological Rarity.

Tinea faciei (TF) is a common dermatomicrobiological condition caused by dermatophytes involving the skin of the face but not the mustache and beard (Tinea barbae). It poses a diagnostic dilemma with its atypical clinical presentation. Pityriasis folliculorum (PF) is a dermatological condition that results in rosacea-like skin eruptions. It was previously associated with a human ectoparasitic infestation. Demodex mites (Demodex folliculorum) is a group of obligate parasites that live on the skin of mammals. These mites have been associated with various dermatological disorders, clinically term

Pityriasis rubra pilaris-like erythroderma secondary to phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitors are a class of small-molecule inhibitors approved for the treatment of certain leukaemias and lymphomas. Their dermatological adverse event profile is poorly described. AIM: To characterize a rare cutaneous adverse event from PI3K inhibitors in order to help dermatologists and oncologists identify and effectively manage such eruptions. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of patients receiving PI3K inhibitors referred to the Skin Toxicities Program in The Center for Cutaneous Oncology. RESULTS: Three patients on PI3K inhibitors f

Psychodermatology: An Indian perspective.

Psychodermatology, a relatively neglected branch of dermatology in India, refers to a holistic approach to skin diseases involving not only the mind and skin, but also the cutaneous effects of psychologic stress. Among many Indian people, culture, religion, the belief in karma, and the tendency to prefer indigenous medical systems can all have a major impact on lifestyle, as well as the approach to managing various diseases, including dermatologic conditions. The origin of psychodermatology in India can be traced to Buddha's period. Indigenous medical systems, such as Ayurveda, Yoga, and Unani

Childhood-Onset Keratosis Lichenoides Chronica Accompanied by Severe Hair Loss.

A 37-year-old woman attended the dermatology outpatient clinic because of recent hair loss from the eyebrows and axillae. Her past medical history revealed mild generalized erythema and hyperpigmented papules and plaques since childhood. On dermatologic examination, there were flat-topped, purple to brown hyperkeratotic lichenoid papules and linear plaques on the elbows, trunk, and buttocks, some of which coalesced into hyperpigmented reticular plaques on the axillae, neck, and groin. Mild erythema was noted. There was thinning and loss of hair of the eyebrows; severe loss of hair was noted in

Cetuximab and panitumumab in a patient with colon cancer and concomitant chronic skin disease: a potential beneficial effect on psoriasis vulgaris.

Monoclonal antibodies against epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) are used in the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer. However, these agents can induce severe dermatological side effects that discourage their administration in patients with chronic dermatological disease. EGFR plays a key role in normal skin development and immunological function, and is expressed in various tissues and organs, although contrarily, it is overexpressed in psoriasis-related skin lesions. Thus, discussion is ongoing regarding the putative pathological role and therapeutic potential of this protein. We her

Clinical Aspects of Dermatitis Associated with Dirofilaria repens in Pets: A Review of 100 Canine and 31 Feline Cases (1990-2010) and a Report of a New Clinic Case Imported from Italy to Dubai.

Cutaneous dirofilariasis is a parasitic disease caused by the mosquito-borne filarial nematodes Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens, living in the subcutaneous tissue of dogs, cats, wild carnivores, and humans. Cases have been recently reported also from Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ukraine, Russia, Austria, Switzerland, France, The Netherlands, and the Middle East. D. repens is not widely known to cause chronic pruritic dermatitis in animals. Dermatological signs observed in 100 canine clinic cases were pruritus (100%), erythema (79%), papulae (62%), focal or multifocal alopecia (55%), hyper

Richner-Hanhart syndrome (tyrosinemia type II): a case report of delayed diagnosis with pseudodendritic corneal lesion.

Richner-Hanhart syndrome (tyrosinemia type II) is a rare autosomal recessive disease associated with high serum tyrosine levels caused by the deficiency of tyrosine aminotransferase enzyme. We report a 15-year-old female patient with complaints of bilateral photophobia and tearing, which started during the infancy period. Biomicroscopic examination revealed bilateral circular corneal opacities on the inferior quadrant and small dendritic lesions at the center of the circular opacities. Blood tests showed a tyrosine level of 508 micromol/L (normal range: 30-150). On her dermatologic examination

Perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens in a caucasian: diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens or dissecting cellulitis of the scalp is a rare, chronic destructive folliculitis of the scalp, characterized by painful nodules, purulent drainage, sinus tracts, keloid formation and cicatricial alopecia. The cause of the disease is unknown, but it is similar in many features to hidradenitis suppurativa and acne conglobata. In our case report, the patient's dermatologic appearance included one slightly erythematous, infiltrated alopecic area with draining lesions in the right parietal part of the scalp with a few alopecic areas in other parts o

Recessive palmoplantar keratodermas: a tale of wings, hands, hair and cancer.

The palmoplantar keratodermas (PPKs) are a heterogeneous group of disorders of cornification affecting the palms and soles. Of late, a number of rare, recessive PPKs such as odonto-onycho-dermal dysplasia have been elucidated. Surprisingly, these results indicate that correct palmoplantar keratinization depends on intact Wingless (WNT) signalling. WNT was originally discovered in the fruit fly where it is required for wing morphogenesis. This ancient signalling pathway is now emerging as a master regulator of differentiation in a variety of tissues, including the intestine and the hair follicl
