Risk factors and population attributable fraction for large-for-gestational-age and macrosomic births in low- and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2025: a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Large-for-gestational-age (LGA) and macrosomic births pose significant maternal and neonatal health risks, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where access to care are often limited. Despite well-established associations between LGA, macrosomia, and various risk factors, the relative contributions of these factors remain underexplored in LMICs. This study aims to identify risks factors for LGA and macrosomia in LMICs, with an emphasis on modifiable ones, and quantify their population attributable fractions (PAFs). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A systematic review w

Type of water and sanitation facilities and risk of non-partner sexual violence: A multilevel analysis across 31 low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Disadvantaged access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is acknowledged as a risk factor for non-partner sexual violence (NPSV), particularly in the context of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, gaps in knowledge regarding the associations between inadequate WASH and NPSV persist. METHODS: Demographic and Health Surveys from 31 low- and middle-income countries (2013-2021) were used for the analysis of 259,208 women aged 15-49 years. For the experience of NPSV in the last 12 months, its associations with source of drinking water (private [reference], public, o

Feasibility of modified halo-pelvic distraction technique in the management of severe spinal deformities in low- and middle-income countries: a pilot study in East Africa.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Paediatric spine deformity, often arising from congenital or neuromuscular causes, can significantly impair cardiopulmonary and intra-abdominal function. Early identification and timely management are crucial to slowing curve progression. However, in LMICs, patients present late with severe curvatures exceeding 90°. Preoperative reduction is useful to mitigate surgical risks. This study assessed the feasibility of a modified halo-pelvic distraction device, focusing on major curve correction and complication rates. METHODS: Patients with severe scoliosis were enrolle

Implementation Science Methodology for the Successful Introduction of High-Dose Methotrexate for the Treatment of Pediatric Mature B-Cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in a Resource-Limited Setting.

BACKGROUND: Despite the excellent outcomes achieved for pediatric mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (MB-NHL) in high-income countries, outcomes remain very poor in low- and middle-income countries. High-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX), which is highly efficacious for the disease, is still not commonly used in low-resource settings due to the potential for treatment-associated toxicity. Though there have been more recent reports of successful use of HD-MTX in resource-limited settings, there are no reports to date regarding the methodology used to safely introduce HD-MTX in these environments. Understanding diagnostic delays among newly diagnosed breast cancer patients at a tertiary cancer care center in a low-middle-income country like Bangladesh.

Breast cancer poses a significant health challenge for women globally, with survival rates varying widely between and within countries. The correlation between delayed diagnosis and lower survival rates is well-established, emphasizing the importance of addressing barriers to early presentation to improve survival rates in low-middle-income countries like Bangladesh. The objective of the study was to assess how often breast cancer patients present late, pinpoint the underlying reasons for the delay, and examine any potential links between delayed presentation and socio-demographic factors in o

Infant-level and child-level predictors of mortality in low-resource settings: the WHO Child Mortality Risk Stratification Multi-Country Pooled Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Despite impressive reductions in overall global child mortality, the rate of decline has slowed during the past decade. Current guidelines for the care of paediatric patients in low-resource settings mostly focus on broad clinical syndromes or undernutrition rather than children's individual contextualised risk. We aimed to identify readily assessable child-level characteristics that can predict mortality risk in a range of community and health-care settings in high-burden settings. METHODS: The WHO Child Mortality Risk Stratification Multi-Country Pooled Cohort (WHO-CMRS) include

A multi-country comparison between mobile phone surveys and face-to-face household surveys to estimate the prevalence of non-communicable diseases behavioural risk factors in low- and middle-income settings.

BACKGROUND: Although mobile phone surveys (MPS) are routinely used to collect health information in high-income countries, concerns remain about the impact of bias on population-level estimates in low-income settings and validation studies are lacking. This study aims to compare non-communicable diseases (NCDs) risk factor estimates obtained from MPS and nationally representative face-to-face household surveys in six low- and middle-income settings. METHODS: The MPS contained core questions from the standard STEPwise approach to NCD risk factor surveillance questionnaire. MPS sampling frames

Impact of health policy reforms on telemedicine and AI integration for early cancer detection among low-income populations in South Asia: A comparative policy analysis.

Early cancer detection remains a major challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where late diagnoses and unequal healthcare access are widespread. While digital innovations such as telemedicine and artificial intelligence (AI) offer significant promise, their successful adoption depends on enabling policy environments. This study investigates how health policy reforms influence the integration of telemedicine and AI tools for early cancer detection in four South Asian LMICs: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Employing a qualitative comparative case study design and guided b

Blood Banking Capacity in Low-and Middle-Income Countries: Covid-19 Convalescent Plasma in Context.

Blood transfusion capacity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), encompassing both the safety and adequacy of the blood supply, is limited. The challenges facing blood banks in LMICs include regulatory oversight, blood donor selection, collection procedures, laboratory testing, and post-transfusion surveillance. A high proportion of LMICs are unable to fully meet clinical demands for blood products, and many do not meet even the minimum threshold of collection (10 units per 1000 population). Suboptimal clinical transfusion practices, in large part due to a lack of training in transfusio

Unmet needs of women with epilepsy living in rural low- and middle-income countries: The experience of the Bolivian Chaco.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy affects approximately 70 million people worldwide, with 80% living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where many people with epilepsy (PWE) go undiagnosed or untreated. Over the last few decades, many efforts have been made worldwide to reduce the treatment gap (TG) in LMICs. However, while Western countries emphasize personalized antiseizure medications (ASM) management in Women with Epilepsy (WwE), little data are available on this topic in LMICs. Our study aimed to assess healthcare standards regarding epilepsy in women from a rural area of Bolivia. METHODS: W

Diverging pathways: exploring the interplay between hospital readmission and postdischarge mortality in paediatric sepsis in low-income settings.

BACKGROUND: Mortality and readmission rates are high in low-income countries following hospital discharge; however, few studies have studied the relationship between these outcomes. Hospital readmission is a complex outcome as it reflects illness severity and health-seeking behaviour. This study aims to better understand the heterogeneous nature of hospital readmission, especially as it pertains to mortality. METHODS: Secondary analysis of a prospective, multisite, observational cohort study included children aged 0-60 months old admitted to hospital with suspected sepsis. We used Fine-Gray m
