Multidisciplinary Clinical Assessment and Interventions for Childhood Listening Difficulty and Auditory Processing Disorder: Relation Between Research Findings and Clinical Practice.

PURPOSE: Listening difficulty (LiD), often classified as auditory processing disorder (APD), has been studied in both research and clinic settings. The aim of this study was to examine the predictive relation between these two settings. In our SICLiD (Sensitive Indicators of Childhood Listening Difficulties) research study, children with normal audiometry, but caregiver-reported LiD, performed poorly on both listening and cognitive tests. Here, we examined results of clinical assessments and interventions for these children in relation to research performance. METHOD: Study setting was a tert

Provider costs of professional COVID-19 rapid antigen testing in low-income settings.

World Health Organization recommends antigen rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) as point of care tests for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in suspected outbreaks when polymerase-chain-reaction testing is not accessible; to trace the extent of outbreaks; and in areas with widespread community transmission. Annual economic costs were estimated for professional SARS-CoV-2 testing as part of several COVID-19 testing use cases in Malawi, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Symptom screening and antigen-based RDT was implemented as part of a multi-country, Unitaid/STAR 3ACP (Africa, Asia, A

Assessment of Usability and Acceptability of Blood-based Hepatitis C Virus Self-testing Among Residents of Urban Slums in Northern India: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Globally, only 36% of people with hepatitis C are aware of their infection, and just 20% of those diagnosed receive treatment, highlighting a significant diagnosis and treatment gap. The World Health Organization recommends hepatitis C virus self-testing (HCVST) as an additional strategy to increase access to diagnosis. METHODS: From July 2023 to April 2024, we conducted a cross-sectional study nested within a larger cluster randomized control trial (RCT) (CTRI/2023/07/054590) in urban slums of Haridwar. A total of 465 participants were recruited from community and urban prim

The first Australian evidence-based guidelines on male infertility.

INTRODUCTION: Infertility affects about one in six couples and a male factor may contribute to 50% of cases. Until recently, no Australian-based clinical guidelines for the management of male infertility had been published. A panel of experts was assembled to formulate the first Australian evidence-based guidelines on male infertility. MAIN RECOMMENDATIONS: The initial evaluation of male fertility should include a reproductive and medical history, physical (including scrotal) examination and semen analysis, and simultaneous evaluation of the female partner. Further evaluation of men with susp

Sequential intramural pregnancies in the right uterine cornu after the transfer of two embryos in a single cycle: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Intramural pregnancy (IMP) is a subtype of ectopic pregnancy that can lead to life-threatening uterine rupture and severe hemorrhage. However, the clinical manifestations of IMP are nonspecific, making early clinical recognition challenging. This study reports a case in which two fresh embryos were transferred in the same cycle, and subsequent intramural pregnancies occurred twice. This study provides comprehensive clinical data for clinicians to gain a deeper understanding of this condition. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old woman underwent the transfer of two fresh embryos in a s

TB/HIV co-infection in homelessness and factors associated with loss to follow-up of tuberculosis treatment: a retrospective cohort.

INTRODUCTION: In Brazil, the homeless population is 56 times more likely to become ill with tuberculosis than the general population, plus co-infection with HIV, which further increases this risk, including unfavorable outcomes. São Paulo is a major urban center in the Global South with a large population of people experiencing homelessness, particularly those coinfected with HIV, which poses challenges to clinical care and municipal management. Although it represents a significant public health issue, it remains underexplored in scientific literature. Therefore, this study aims to identify fa

Gastric teratoma in a 7-month-old infant: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Gastric teratomas are exceedingly rare neoplasms, predominantly affecting male infants and constituting less than 1% of all teratomas. Prenatally, their rapid growth can lead to fetal distress syndrome. Postnatally, they may manifest as vomiting or gastric outlet obstruction; however, some cases present as a slowly enlarging abdominal mass without gastrointestinal symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 7-month-old Afghan infant with an asymptomatic abdominal mass. At 3 months of age, a small abdominal mass was noted; however, due to financial constraints, the parents

Exploring paediatric rheumatology care: a ten-year retrospective analysis of the patient population in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic diseases can seriously impact children's general health, development, and growth. However, due to a lack of resources, paediatric rheumatology is a largely underdeveloped speciality in many African nations. Children with rheumatic disorders face obstacles in accessing specialized medical care, including lack of specialists, care centres, medication access, and limited research and education to increase understanding of paediatric rheumatic disease among healthcare practitioners. This study described the disease characteristics, prevalence, and challenges faced by paediatr

Headache in the adult population of Cameroon: prevalence estimates and demographic associations from a cross-sectional nationwide population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of headache prevalence, and the burdens attributable to headache disorders, remains incomplete in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): reliable studies have been conducted only in Zambia (southern SSA) and Ethiopia (eastern SSA). As part of the Global Campaign against Headache, we investigated the prevalence of headache in Cameroon, in Central SSA. METHODS: We used the same methodology as the studies in Zambia and Ethiopia, employing cluster-randomized sampling in four regions of Cameroon, selected to reflect the country's geographic, ethnic and cultural diversities. We visited, un

Cross-sectional study of psychiatric disorders in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain and individuals without pain.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal chronic pain is a leading cause of global disability and laboral incapacity. However, there is a lack of population-based studies that investigate the relationship between chronic pain and mental disorders with a control group, particularly among low- and middle-income countries. Chronic pain is a serious public health problem in terms of human suffering, and in terms of socioeconomic implications. Frequent association with different mental disorders increases disability, decreases quality of life, and makes diagnosis and treatment challenging. The present study aim
