ICAM1 blockade improves ischemic muscle reperfusion in diabetic mice.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia (CLTI) represents the most advanced stage of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and is associated with dire prognosis, characterized by a substantial risk of limb amputation and diminished life expectancy. Despite significant advancements in therapeutic interventions, the underlying mechanisms precipitating the progression of PAD to CLTI remain elusive. METHODS: Considering diabetes is one of the main risk factors contributing to PAD exacerbation into CLTI, we compared hind limb ischemia recovery in HFD STZ vs. non-HFD STZ mice to identify new mechan

Effect modification of dietary diversity on the association of air pollution with incidence, complications, and mortality of type 2 diabetes: Results from a large prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: It remains unknown whether the dietary diversity score (DDS) could modify the association of long-term exposure to individual air pollutants and the mixture of various pollutants with the incidence, complications, and mortality of type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS: We included 162,579 participants from the UK Biobank who had ≥ one 24-h dietary assessment and were free of diabetes or diabetes complications before their last response date of the 24-h dietary assessment. Exposure to benzene, NOx, NO2, SO2, PM10, and PM2.5 was estimated at each participant's residential location using a

Comparison of the levels of 25(OH) vitamin D3 in women with gestational diabetes mellitus and normoglycemic pregnant women.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a public health problem that currently affects a large part of the female population and has short- and long-term consequences for the fetus and the mother. It has been reported that GDM affects 1%-14% of all pregnancies, and that its incidence has been steadily rising. In recent years while exploring the etiological factors responsible for the emergence of insulin resistance particularly that of transient nature, vitamin D has emerged as one of the possible factors. Although systematic review and metaanalysis of observational studies show t

Clinical features and metabolic derangements in acquired generalized lipodystrophy: case reports and review of the literature.

We present clinical descriptions, metabolic features, and patterns of body fat loss of 16 patients with acquired generalized lipodystrophy (AGL) seen by us over the last 10 years. In addition, we review 63 cases of AGL reported in the literature. Based on these data, we propose new diagnostic criteria for AGL, the essential criterion being selective loss of body fat from large regions of the body occurring after birth. We also propose a subclassification of AGL into 3 varieties, type 1, the panniculitis variety; type 2, the autoimmune disease variety; and type 3, the idiopathic variety, which

Selenium intake and risk of type 2 diabetes among adults in Saudi Arabia.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have demonstrated mixed findings regarding the intake of selenium (Se), an essential trace element for antioxidant defense and insulin metabolism regulation. Some studies have linked high Se intake to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), while others found protective or null associations. Se plays a dual role in that it aids pancreatic b-cell function and reduces oxidative stress, while excessive amounts disrupt redox balance and impair glucose metabolism. METHODS: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between Se intake and markers of glucose

Cooking Well with Diabetes: A Healthy Cooking School for Diabetes Prevention and Management.

One in ten Americans suffers from type 2 diabetes, which, if not managed well, can result in severe complications, disability, and premature death. Diabetes education classes can play a pivotal role in providing practical education on diabetes and self-care behaviors, with a particular emphasis on dietary management, which is often regarded as the most demanding diabetes self-care behavior. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service developed Cooking Well with Diabetes (CWWD), a four-week interactive diabetes education series, with each week consisting of a lecture on healthy eating coupled with

Maternal fats and pregnancy complications: Implications for long-term health.

Pregnancy imposes increased nutritional requirements for the well being of the mother and fetus. Maternal lipid metabolism is critical for fetal development and long-term health of the offspring as it plays a key role in energy storage, tissue growth and cell signaling. Maternal fat composition is considered as a modifiable risk for abnormal lipid metabolism and glucose tolerance during pregnancy. Data derived from observational studies demonstrate that higher intake of saturated fats during pregnancy is associated with pregnancy complications (preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus and p
