Gallic acid and omega-3 fatty acids decrease inflammatory and oxidative stress in manganese-treated rats.

Humans and animals are regularly exposed to toxic chemicals with subsequent adverse effects. Manganese exposure occurs via contaminated sources; over-exposure is associated with neuronal, hepatorenal dysfunction, etc. This work advances the field of natural chemopreventive agents by reporting evidence lacking in the literature on GA and ω-3-FA obtained primarily from the diet in protecting biological beings against toxic chemicals. Individually, GA and ω-3-FA exhibit various pharmacological effects. Our findings confirm the previous reports; however, we demonstrate the additional evidence for

Acute liver failure.

Acute liver failure is a rare and severe consequence of abrupt hepatocyte injury, and can evolve over days or weeks to a lethal outcome. A variety of insults to liver cells result in a consistent pattern of rapid-onset elevation of aminotransferases, altered mentation, and disturbed coagulation. The absence of existing liver disease distinguishes acute liver failure from decompensated cirrhosis or acute-on-chronic liver failure. Causes of acute liver failure include paracetamol toxicity, hepatic ischaemia, viral and autoimmune hepatitis, and drug-induced liver injury from prescription drugs, a

Impact of gut microbiota on neurological diseases: Diet composition and novel treatments.

Gut microbiota has significant effects on the structure and function of the enteric and central nervous system including human behaviour and brain regulation. Herein, we analyze the role of this intestinal ecosystem, the effects of dietary changes and the administration of nutritional supplements, such as probiotics, prebiotics, or fecal transplantation in neuropsychiatric disorders. Numerous factors have been highlighted to influence gut microbiota composition, including genetics, health status, mode of birth delivery and environment. However, diet composition and nutritional status has been

The protective role of antioxidants in the defence against ROS/RNS-mediated environmental pollution.

Overproduction of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species can result from exposure to environmental pollutants, such as ionising and nonionising radiation, ultraviolet radiation, elevated concentrations of ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, cigarette smoke, asbestos, particulate matter, pesticides, dioxins and furans, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and many other compounds present in the environment. It appears that increased oxidative/nitrosative stress is often neglected mechanism by which environmental pollutants affect human health. Oxidation of and oxidative damage to cellular compo

Vitamin D receptor activation: clinical outcomes.

Vitamin D has been recognized for years as a key player in the control of bone metabolism through the regulation of calcium and phosphate homeostasis. Vitamin D deficiency appears to be common in the general population as a result of decreased dietary intake, diminished absorption, or limited exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D deficiency results in increased circulating levels of parathyroid hormone, which has several disadvantageous effects on bone metabolism. The intake of ordinary doses of vitamin D supplements appears to be associated with a decrease in total mortality rates. In the chronic k

Health effects of vegan diets.

Recently, vegetarian diets have experienced an increase in popularity. A vegetarian diet is associated with many health benefits because of its higher content of fiber, folic acid, vitamins C and E, potassium, magnesium, and many phytochemicals and a fat content that is more unsaturated. Compared with other vegetarian diets, vegan diets tend to contain less saturated fat and cholesterol and more dietary fiber. Vegans tend to be thinner, have lower serum cholesterol, and lower blood pressure, reducing their risk of heart disease. However, eliminating all animal products from the diet increases

Ureteral mullerian carcinosarcoma (mixed mullerian tumor) associated with endometriosis occurring in a patient with a concentrated soy isoflavones supplementation.

Malignant transformation and particularly malignant mixed mullerian tumor arising in extragenital endometriosis is extremely rare and occurs in the majority of cases after estrogen replacement therapy. We present a case of a 75-year-old woman who developed a ureteral malignant mullerian carcinosarcoma in a context of florid endometriosis. The patient had a history of total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy 30 years earlier for extensive endometriosis. Since 5 years, the patient has been on phytoestrogen supplementation consisting of 72 mg/day of superconcentrated soy isoflavone

Psychiatric effects of ephedra use: an analysis of Food and Drug Administration reports of adverse events.

OBJECTIVE: As part of a synthesis of evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of ephedra, the authors describe data on psychiatric adverse events from reports submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). METHOD: The authors reviewed all 1,820 adverse event reports related to dietary supplements containing herbal ephedra from FDA MedWatch files as of Sept. 30, 2001. Fifty-seven serious psychiatric events were reported. RESULTS: The most commonly reported events were psychosis, severe depression, mania or agitation, hallucinations, sleep disturbance, and suicidal ideation. Ten events

Iron deficiency anaemia--an old enemy.

Anaemia has remained a widespread public health problem in countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Prevalence figures vary from a low of 17% to a high of over 70% among preschool children; from 14% to 42% among adolescents and from 11% to over 40% among women of childbearing age. Although the prevalence of anaemia has often been used as a proxy indicator for iron deficiency anaemia, this approach is not valid in settings where the etiology of anaemia is complex or unknown or where other micronutrient deficiencies of folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin A can co-exist. An integrated, multifac

Is chromium a trace essential metal?

If chromium is an essential metal it must have a specific role in an enzyme or cofactor, and a deficiency should produce a disease or impairment of function. To date, no chromium-containing glucose tolerance factor has been characterized, the purpose of the low-molecular-weight chromium-binding protein is questionable, and no direct interaction between chromium and insulin has been found. Furthermore, chromium3+ is treated like the toxic metals arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury in animals. Chromium3+ may be involved in chromium6+-induced cancers because chromium6+ is converted to chromium3+ i

Therapeutic approaches to malnutrition in chronic dialysis patients: the different modalities of nutritional support.

Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is a common complication in maintenance hemodialysis and chronic peritoneal dialysis patients and is a powerful predictor of morbidity and mortality. Although this association does not prove that malnutrition is a cause of this increased morbidity and mortality, it is consistent with this possibility. There are a number of modalities of nutritional support for the prevention or treatment of PEM in maintenance dialysis patients. Routine methods include preventing PEM before the onset of maintenance dialysis therapy, dietary counseling, maintenance of an adequat

Treatments affecting fluid and electrolyte status during exercise.

A number of feeding and management practices, dietary electrolyte supplements, and medications may affect fluid and electrolyte status in resting and exercising horses. The contents of the gastrointestinal tract of the equine athlete, unlike its human counterpart, are responsible for more than 10% of body weight. Although ingesta traditionally has been considered dead weight for the sprinting horse, it is a valuable reservoir of fluid and electrolytes that may be used during endurance exercise. Numerous strategies for hyperhydration of the equine athlete and for replacement of fluid and electr

Community based, effective, low cost approach to the treatment of severe malnutrition in rural Jamaica.

Moderate and severe malnutrition are endemic in much of the developing world and in association with pockets of deprivation in the developed world. The cost in terms of individual and social development is high. The principles of effective management are clearly documented. A low cost, community based treatment programme for moderately and severely malnourished children under 3 years of age was established at a health centre in rural Jamaica. Children were followed up monthly and defaulters were rigorously recalled. Management consisted of carefully delivered dietary advice, antibiotics, anthe

Xerophthalmia, keratomalacia and nutritional blindness.

Vitamin A deficiency remains a major cause of pediatric ocular morbidity. Over five million children develop xerophthalmia annually, a quarter million or more becoming blind. It is also a major pathway for measles-associated blindness, particularly in Africa. Treatment is practical and inexpensive, based upon the oral administration of 200,000 IU vitamin A on two successive days, at a cost of 10 cents U.S. Given the potential rapidity of corneal necrosis (keratomalacia) and the relative inaccessibility of health services to those at greatest risk, prevention is probably more important than tre

Haematological and tissue abnormalities in chicks caused by acute and subclinical folate deficiency.

1. Haematological, histological and ultrastructural findings in young chicks fed on a purified diet severely deficient in folate are reported. 2. Growth of the birds was greatly depressed and they had a macrocytic anaemia. Other haematological changes included abnormal nuclear formations in erythrocytes, numerous mitoses and hypersegmented granulocytes. 3. Megaloblasts were observed in bone marrow and their fine structure is described for the first time in an avian species. 4. Morphological changes occurred also in the liver. The parenchyma had damaged sinusoidal endothelium, inflammatory cell

Edema, hypoproteinemia, and zinc deficiency in low-birth-weight infants.

Three premature infants with zinc deficiency who had an unusual presentation with generalized edema and hypoproteinemia between 5 and 9 weeks of age are described. The infants were fed their own mother's milk, supplemented with a proprietary formula after the first 2 to 3 weeks of life. None of the infants had diarrhea, liver disease, or urinary protein loss. Treatment with oral zinc supplements led to rapid resolution of the edema, with an increase in values for serum proteins, alkaline phosphatase, and zinc. There was no recurrence of symptoms following discontinuation of zinc therapy 1 mont

Cardiac failure in Addison's disease.

In an average 30 years of follow-up study, seven of 22 patients with primary adrenal insufficiency have had cardiac failure. Comparison of these seven with the 15 who remain free of this complication revealed that the former group were somewhat older and had higher incidences of unrelated cardiac disease and of nonsteroid-dependent hypertension, but that their replacement regimens, with respect to sodium supplementation and sodium-retaining steroids, were identical with the latter. Coincident with the appearance of cardiac failure, all seven patients had a decrease in sodium requirements. Adeq

Care of the hand in recessive epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa refers to a group of disorders whose common feature is blistering of the skin. This paper deals specifically with the loss of motion and digital function resulting from the recessive dystrophic type of epidermolysis bullosa in five young patients aged 3 to 11 years. Indications for surgery and preoperative planning are discussed. Special management considerations included skin care, the need for dietary supplements, and a preference for ketamine anesthesia. Epidermal degloving, full release of contractures, the use of split-thickness skin grafts, and immobilization and su

Diets containing pomegranate polyphenol and soy isoflavone attenuate contact hypersensitivity in mice.

Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is frequently used as an animal model for human allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Diets of pomegranate polyphenols (PPs) or soy isoflavones (SIs) each alleviated CHS symptoms; however, the effect of diets containing a mixture of PPs and SIs on CHS is unclear. We investigated the CHS-inhibitory effects of diets supplemented with a mixture of PPs and SIs at human physiologically relevant doses. Consuming the mixture of PPs and SIs attenuated ear swelling and reduced infiltration of Gr-1-positive cells. Ear swelling decreased in the PP and SI-treated mice compared
