BACKGROUND: Currently, treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in Australia consists most commonly of a 9-month course of isoniazid (9H). A 3-month course of weekly isoniazid and rifapentine (3HP) has been shown to be as effective as 9 months of daily isoniazid, and associated with less hepatotoxicity; however, rifapentine is not currently available in Australia. Introduction of this regimen would have apparent advantages for people with LTBI in Victoria by safely shortening duration of LTBI therapy. However, the cost benefit of this new therapeutic approach is uncertain.

There has long been evidence that hepatitis C can lead to persistent infection in a high proportion of infected individuals, and can progress to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The transition from acute to chronic hepatitis C is usually sub-clinical. Accurate studies of the time course for clearance of acute hepatitis C are difficult to carry out because of the silent onset of the acute disease. The likelihood of spontaneous HCV resolution is associated with several genetic factors, including IL28B inheritance and the DQB1*0301 allele of the major histocomp

An outbreak of the nematode Strongyloides sp. occurred in a population of 18 male and 29 female panther chameleons (Furcifer pardalis) at the Singapore Zoo. The parasite was first detected in one individual during routine microscopic examination of feces using the direct examination and magnesium sulfate flotation methods. The parasite was later found to have a closest match (98.96%) with Strongyloides sp. Okayama by DNA sequencing. Over a period of 6 mon, 97.9% (46/47) of the panther chameleons tested positive for the parasite, and 25.5% (12/47) of the animals died due to the disease. All the

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involves two clinically defined entities, namely Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Fecal calprotectin (FCAL) is used as a marker to distinguish between organic IBD and functional bowel disease in disorders of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) spectrum. Food components may affect digestion and cause functional abdominal disorders of the IBS spectrum. In this retrospective study, we report on FCAL testing to search for IBD in 228 patients with disorders of the IBS spectrum caused by food intolerances/malabsorption. Included were patients with fructose mala

BACKGROUND: Since the eradication of smallpox in 1980, monkeypox has been the most prevalent zoonosis caused by orthopoxviruses. The virus has been largely endemic to the rainforests of Central and West Africa with occasional exportation to other countries. The disease typically runs a self-limited course with case fatality rates ranging from 4 to 11%. Currently, the world is faced with a multi-country outbreak of monkeypox, whose extent and impact remains to be seen.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to discuss the changing epidemiology of the monkeypox virus, with special referenc

BACKGROUND: This Phase 2 multicentre trial in localised non-gastric marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) evaluated the effectiveness and safety of radiotherapy and documented markers of autoimmunity and Helicobacter pylori infection.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eligible patients had Stages I and II or paired-organ, non-gastric MZL. Bone marrow evaluation, autoantibody panel, and H. pylori evaluation were mandatory. Involved-field or involved-site radiotherapy was delivered to 24-30.6 Gy. Detected H. pylori infections underwent eradication.
RESULTS: Between 2006 and 2014, six centres enrolled 70 patients,

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic disease caused mainly by Mycobacterium bovis, a zoonotic pathogen that has a worldwide distribution causing serious economic losses for milk and meat producers. In Chile, the disease in dairy cattle has a heterogeneous distribution, where the Metropolitan Region concentrates the highest animal prevalence and the main challenge for the national control and eradication programme. In this epidemiological context, vaccination with the M. bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine might be a useful strategy for disease prevention and control. The objective of

Hepatitis C virus (HCV)-induced liver disease contributes to chronic hepatitis. The immune factors identified in HCV include changes in the innate and adaptive immune system. The inflammatory mediators, known as "inflammasome", are a consequence of the metabolic products of cells and commensal or pathogenic bacteria and viruses. The only effective strategy to prevent disease progression is eradication of the viral infection. Immune cells play a pivotal role during liver inflammation, triggering fibrogenesis. The present paper discusses the potential role of markers in cell death and the inflam

Brucella abortus is the causative agent of brucellosis, a neglected endemic zoonotic disease. It causes devastating economic losses in low income and developing countries. Clinical symptoms of infected cows include abortion, poor weight, reduced fertility gain and reduction in milk production. Transmission of the zoonotic disease from cattle to human can occur through direct contact with infected cows, their tissues (e.g. placenta or aborted tissues), or their products (e.g. dairy) whereas human-to-human transmission can occur transplacentally or via breastfeeding. Malaise, fatigue, fever, art

INTRODUCTION: The eradication of the middle ear disease is mentioned as the fundamental principle of tympanoplasty. The presence of some factors related to patient or disease itself forces the physician to classify the chronic ear disease as high-risk perforations. The aim of this study was to present a tri-layer tympanoplasty technique and its otological and audiological outcomes in the ears with high-risk perforations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out on a total of 46 eligible ears that had chronic otitis media with high-risk perforations. Preoperatively, 17,

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a preventable disease that is prevalent in developing regions of the world. Its eradication from most of the developed world indicates that this disease can be controlled and eliminated. Aim: To conduct an in-depth analysis of the trends and challenges of controlling RHD in the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR). Methodology: Global data from the World Health Organization (WHO) data banks were retrieved for total deaths and age standardized death rate per 100,000 (ASDR) by age group, sex, and year (from 2000 to 2015). The data was compared with the five other W

BACKGROUND: Since its discovery in the early 1980s, Helicobacter pylori has been linked to a variety of gastric and extragastric diseases. Chronic infection with H. pylori causes histologically evident gastritis in all colonized individuals and is the predominant risk factor for gastric and duodenal ulcers as well as gastric adenocarcinoma. However, increasingly robust experimental and epidemiological evidence suggests that H. pylori may at the same time be beneficial to its carriers, as it efficiently prevents allergic disorders and chronic inflammatory conditions. The purpose of this review

Pathogenic strains of Vibrio cholerae are responsible for endemic and pandemic outbreaks of the disease cholera. The complete toxigenic mechanisms underlying virulence in Vibrio strains are poorly understood. The hypothesis of this work was that virulent versus non-virulent strains of V. cholerae harbor distinctive genomic elements that encode virulence. The purpose of this study was to elucidate genomic differences between the O1 serotypes and non-O1 V. cholerae PS15, a non-toxigenic strain, in order to identify novel genes potentially responsible for virulence. In this study, we compared the

Nowadays. there is a growing interest in probiotics as a safe way of changing the intestinal bacterial flora. Probiotics may have potential in several gastroenterological conditions, especially when the intestinal flora has been disturbed. Most scientific evidence is available for diarrhoea patients treated with Lactobacillus GG, Lactobacillus reuteri or Saccharomyces boulardii. Meta-analyses have shown an overall reduction in the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea during treatment with probiotics, and benefits have also been demonstrated for patients with rota-virus-associated diarrhoea.

A team of researchers, including one behavioral scientist (S.M.N.) and three epidemiologists (L.Q., O.S. and S.N.) conducted community analyses to assess the social and cultural factors that affect the detection and reporting of disease cases in a surveillance system, using acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance in Niger as a case study. Over a 60-day period in the country, the research team reviewed written field reports and interviewed epidemiologists, nurses, community members and persons in governmental and non-governmental organizations. Overall, we found that the logistical difficult

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide. In the United States alone, CRC was responsible for approximately 52,550 deaths in 2023, with an estimated 153,020 new cases. CRC presents with synchronous peritoneal spread in 5-10% of patients, and up to 20-50% of patients with recurrent disease will develop metachronous colorectal cancer peritoneal metastatic (CRC-PM) disease. Eradication of the tumor, tumor margins and microscopic residual disease is paramount, as microscopic residual disease is associated with local recurrences, with 5-year survival rates of less than 35%.
