Electropalatographic data collected with and without a face mask.

This study investigates the extent to which the use of a face mask conveys linguopalatal contact changes during speech production. Electropalatographic data from five Catalan speakers were collected for different consonants, i.e., the alveolar stop [n], the alveolopalatal stop [n] and the palatal approximant [j], in the sequences [iCi] and [aCe]. Results for [n] indicate more closure retraction in the mask versus nonmask condition occurring presumably when the mask is pressed forcefully against the face in front of the mouth. The use of the mask for [n] and [j] causes an increase in dorsopalat

Effect of upper airway muscle contraction on supraglottic resistance and stability.

The activation of upper airway (UAW) muscles is believed to increase UAW patency to air flow. To evaluate the mechanisms by which UAW muscles act to prevent UAW collapse, pressure-flow relationships of the isolated UAW as well as the negative pressure required to cause UAW collapse (Pcrit) were assessed before and during electrical stimulation of four UAW muscle pairs in anesthetized dogs. Stimulation of each of the muscles shifted the pressure-flow curve toward lower pressures for any given flow rate, indicating UAW dilatation. UAW resistance decreased from 7.9 +/- 0.6 to 0.4 +/- 0.1, 2.7 +/-

Porcine malignant hyperthermia: halothane effects on force generation in skeletal muscles.

Halothane-induced malignant hyperthermia (MH) is thought to result from a defect in the regulation of cytosolic calcium concentration in MH-susceptible (MHS) skeletal muscle. Such a defect might be expected to alter the time course of contractile responses. To test this hypothesis, isolated intact cell bundles from external intercostal and common digital extensor muscles of normal and MHS pigs were stimulated electrically to elicit twitch and tetanic tension in the presence and absence of halothane (2.5%). Time intervals measured for both twitches and tetani were (1) the latent period between

Permeability of membrane of Babesia canis infected erythrocytes--influence of an external electric field.

The erythrocytes infection by a parasite (Babesia canis) induced a modification of the biological membrane which was studied using the effect of electric pulses of short duration. This process induces the formation of pores and during the opening hemoglobin and other cytoplasmic proteins diffuse out of the cells and are recovered in the external medium. The rate of molecular permeation across the electrically perforated membranes depends on several factors: electric-field strength, pulses number, pulse duration, temperature and cellular concentration. Even for low parasitemia, differences in t

Compound action potential thresholds and tuning curves in the alligator lizard.

Compound action potential (AP) thresholds and tuning curves were measured in the alligator lizard using techniques similar to those used with the mammal. For tone burst stimuli, the AP was a major component of the gross response, the electrical response to sound recorded by a wire electrode near the cochlea. The AP thresholds agreed well with threshold estimates based on single-fiber data. A forward masking paradigm produced AP tuning curves which resemble single-fiber tuning curves. A simultaneous masking paradigm produced curves which match the boundaries of single-fiber two-tone rate suppre

Responses of intradental nerve fibres to stimulation of dentine and pulp.

In the present work responses of intradental nerve fibres to stimuli that induce fluid flow in dentinal tubules as well as to direct mechanical irritation of the exposed pulp were studied on 9 young adult beagle dogs. Under pentobarbitone anesthesia 31 single functional intradental fibre units were dissected from the mandibular nerve. Stimuli were applied to the lower left canine tooth. Exposed dentine surface was irritated by scraping, air blasts and dry absorbent paper and the pulp mechanically with a von Frey hair. Ten fibre units responded to stimulation of dentine. Six of them were also t

Pneumothorax: a complication of nerve conduction studies using needle stimulation.

Two patients developed left pneumothorax after nerve conduction studies were done as part of their evaluation for left thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). Chest x-rays indicated a 20% and 10% left pneumothorax, respectively. Stimulation was accomplished at Erb point with a 1 1/2-inch needle electrode after unsuccessful attempts at percutaneous stimulation. Because of this complication, this procedure has been discontinued and only percutaneous stimulation at Erb's point is being used. The diagnosis of TOS is determined by other criteria.

Stimulus-induced EEG complexes and motor spasms in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

Patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) typically present with spontaneous periodic, stereotyped electroencephalographic (EEG) complexes and motor spasms, which are not usually affected by sensory stimuli. This report describes two patients with SSPE in whom the EEG complexes and the motor movements occurred mainly in response to afferent stimuli. Various forms of stimuli were effective in precipitating the movements and EEG complexes, particularly when the stimulus was unexpected or startled the patient. During sleep, the EEG complexes spontaneously occurred in a more periodi

[Urinary incontinence after prostate surgery, Clinical, therapeutic and medico-legal aspects (author's transl)].

Operative damage to the sphincter apparatus below the uvula vesicae is the most serious complication of prostatic surgery. Responsible for more or less total urinary incontinence, sometimes associated with dysuria, it is very difficult to repair, whatever the technics now proposed. The psychological and social repercussions of this infirmity, the difficulty or impossibility of its repair explain the importance of the medico-legal problems raised when the surgeon is responsible.

Experiences and critical comments on the temporary intravesical electrostimulation of the neurogenic bladder in spina bifida children.

This is a report of a special method of a temporary intravesical electrostimulation of the bladder for the treatment of the urinary incontinence of spina bifida children. The technique with presentation of apparatus and catheter is described in detail. The criterias for the selection of the patients are explained, the most important of which is the response of the detrusor muscle during the stimulation recorded by uromanometry. 26 spina bifida children were treated. There is at least a success in 50% of the patients, if the criteria are fulfilled.

Proactive and retroactive effects of hippocampal stimulation on active avoidance learning, hippocampal EEG and brain acetylcholinesterase activity in cats.

The subject of this investigation were the effects of electrical stimulation of the hippocampus on the acquisition of active avoidance response (AAR) in a shuttle-box. The stimulation (200 microamperes, 50/s, negative rectangular pulses of 1.0 ms duration) was applied once for 10 s before or after each training session. It was found that the application of hippocampal stimulation before each session facilitated the acquisition of AAR; discontinuation of the stimulation after training did not cause a decrease of AAR performance. Application of the stimulation after each session inhibited learni

[Treatment of chronic pain with intracerebral stimulators].

A new technique for the functional treatment of chronic intractable pain with a cerebral stimulation system under the patient's control is described. A four-pole electrode, diameter 0.65 mm (made by Medtronic), was implanted under stereotaxic control into nine patients. Stimulation was via a substernally implanted receiver connected to the intracerebral electrode. A pocket-sized stimulator with circular aerial, intermittently placed on the patient's skin, was activated by the patient whenever pain occurred. Pain suppression was achieved in all instances, best results being obtained with stimul

The relationship of extrinsic nerves to motor activity of the upper urinary tract. In vivo studies on the pig.

Ureteral activity in the anesthetized pig was monitored by indwelling open-ended nonocclusive fluid-filled catheters. After a preliminary control period, electrical stimulation was applied to the renal/ureteral nerves, anterior and posterior vagi, and the preaortic abdominal nerve plexuses. Such stimulation was uniformly without effect upon renal pelvis and ureteral activity as observed visually and also as recorded by the intraluminal catheters. Excessive mechanical stimulation of the ureter and collecting system on one side did not induce any change whatsoever in the motor activity of the co

Electrophysiological investigations on the projections from the cerebral cortex to the vermal posterior lobe of the cerebellum.

The following cerebrocortical areas have been electrically stimulated in cats under Nembutal anaesthesia: forelimb and hindlimb areas of the primary sensorimotor cortex, primary and secondary acoustic areas and visual area. Stimulation of these regions evokes in the vermal portion of lobuli VI and VII of the cerebellum potentials at a short latency (2.8-3.5 ms) and at a longer latency (12-22 ms), which have been identified as due to mossy and climbing fibre inputs respectively. Each point of the cerebellar cortex receives usually projections by some and never by all the stimulated cerebrocorti
