Long-term neurocognitive and quality of life outcomes in survivors of pediatric hematopoietic cell transplant.

PURPOSE: Pediatric patients who undergo hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) are at risk for neurocognitive impairments, which can impact quality of life. Given limited long-term studies, we aimed to characterize the late neurocognitive outcomes in a cohort of pediatric HCT survivors. METHODS: Eligible survivors (HCT at age < 21 year and ≥ 1 year post-HCT) completed a 60-question survey of neurocognitive function and quality of life, which included the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study Neurocognitive Questionnaire (CCSS-NCQ) and the Neuro-Quality of Life Cognitive Function Short Form (Neuro-QoL)

Utilization of psychotropic medications in children with FASD: a retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition resulting from pre-natal alcohol exposure. In Canada, an estimated 1.4-4% of newborns are affected by FASD. FASD is often associated with behavioural comorbidities and many individuals require psychotropic medication. However, to date there are no FASD specific guidelines for prescribing medication. Recently, Mela and colleagues described four behavioural symptom clusters commonly seen in FASD with suggested pharmacologic treatment for each cluster within an algorithm. The primary objective was to compare the

Women's informal surveillance of alcohol consumption in intimate heterosexual relationships during the early parenting period.

Alcohol consumption may play an important part in intimate heterosexual relationships, including regulating partners' emotional well-being and sustaining relational bonds. Quantitative studies consistently indicate that women play a prominent role in the informal surveillance of their partners' drinking. This paper aims to contribute to the evidence-base by examining possible meanings and reasons underpinning the surveillance of drinking in the early parenting period. In doing so, we draw from the results of a study conducted in Yorkshire (UK), exploring accounts of alcohol drinking practices

Neuropathic Pain Causes a Decrease in the Dendritic Tree Complexity of Hippocampal CA3 Pyramidal Neurons.

The International Pain Association defines neuropathic pain as "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage." Recent studies show that chronic neuropathic pain causes both morphological and functional changes within brain structures. Due to the impact of supraspinal centers on pain signal processing, patients with chronic pain often suffer from depression, anxiety, memory impairment, and learning disabilities. Changes in hippocampal neuronal and glial plasticity can play a substantial role in the development of these symptoms. Given the spec

Intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) or intellectual developmental disability (IDD) is one of the commonest neurodevelopmental disabilities worldwide and is known to affect 2% of the population of France or just over a million people. It is marked by a reduced ability to reason and understand abstract or complex information, which heavily restricts school learning and limits the individual's ability to adapt to daily life, including their transition to adulthood. Intellectual handicap or mental handicap results from an interaction between the individual vulnerability of a person with ID and their ecos

Neuromagnetic Amygdala Response to Pain-Related Fear as a Brain Signature of Fibromyalgia.

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain condition characterized by impaired emotional regulation. This study explored the brain response to pain-related fear as a potential brain signature of FM. METHODS: We used a conditioned fear task and magnetoencephalography to record pain-related fear responses in patients with FM. Two blocks of 30 fear responses were collected to compute the response strength in the first block and the strength difference between the first and second blocks (fear habituation). These measurements were investigated for their clinical relevance and compared with

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation as an Add-on Treatment to Cognitive-Behavior Therapy in First Episode Drug-Naïve Major Depression Patients: The ESAP Study Protocol.

Background: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) affects more than 264 million people worldwide. Current treatments include the use of psychotherapy and/or drugs, however ~30% of patients either do not respond to these treatments, or do not tolerate the side effects associated to the use of pharmacological interventions. Thus, it is important to study non-pharmacological interventions targeting mechanisms not directly involved with the regulation of neurotransmitters. Several studies demonstrated that transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) can be effective for symptoms relief in MDD. Howeve

Diffusional kurtosis imaging and white matter microstructure modeling in a clinical study of major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a globally prevalent psychiatric disorder that results from disruption of multiple neural circuits involved in emotional regulation. Although previous studies using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) found smaller values of fractional anisotropy (FA) in the white matter, predominantly in the frontal lobe, of patients with MDD, studies using diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) are scarce. Here, we used DKI whole-brain analysis with tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) to investigate the brain microstructural abnormalities in MDD. Twenty-six patients with MDD and 42

Systematic review of organisation-wide, trauma-informed care models in out-of-home care (OoHC) settings.

Trauma in early childhood has been shown to adversely affect children's social, emotional, and physical development. Children living in out-of-home care (OoHC) have better outcomes when care providers are present for children, physically, psychologically, and emotionally. Unfortunately, the high turnover of out-of-home carers, due to vicarious trauma (frequently resulting in burnout and exhaustion) can result in a child's trauma being re-enacted during their placement in OoHC. Organisation-wide therapeutic care models (encompassing the whole organisation, from the CEO to all workers including

Effects of central RVD-hemopressin(α) administration on anxiety, feeding behavior and hypothalamic neuromodulators in the rat.

BACKGROUND: The endocannabinoid (eCB) system is strongly involved in the regulation of anxiety and feeding behavior. RVD-hemopressin(α) [RVD-hp(α)], a N-terminally extended form of hemopressin, is a negative allosteric modulator of the cannabinoid (CB) 1 receptor and a positive allosteric modulator of CB2 receptor which has been recently reported to exert anxiolytic/antidepressant and anorexigenic effects after peripheral administration in rats. Pharmacological evidences reported a possible link between brain hypocretin/orexin, monoamine and eCB systems, as regards appetite and emotional behav

Borderline personality disorder and regularly drinking alcohol before sex.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Drinking alcohol before sex increases the likelihood of engaging in unprotected intercourse, having multiple sexual partners and becoming infected with sexually transmitted infections. Borderline personality disorder (BPD), a complex psychiatric disorder characterised by pervasive instability in emotional regulation, self-image, interpersonal relationships and impulse control, is associated with substance use disorders and sexual risk behaviours. However, no study has examined the relationship between BPD and drinking alcohol before sex in the USA. This study examined th

The primary vascular dysregulation syndrome: implications for eye diseases.

Vascular dysregulation refers to the regulation of blood flow that is not adapted to the needs of the respective tissue. We distinguish primary vascular dysregulation (PVD, formerly called vasospastic syndrome) and secondary vascular dysregulation (SVD). Subjects with PVD tend to have cold extremities, low blood pressure, reduced feeling of thirst, altered drug sensitivity, increased pain sensitivity, prolonged sleep onset time, altered gene expression in the lymphocytes, signs of oxidative stress, slightly increased endothelin-1 plasma level, low body mass index and often diffuse and fluctuat

Using the common sense self-regulation model to determine psychological predictors of prosthetic use and activity limitations in lower limb amputees.

PURPOSE: There are around 800 lower limb amputations performed each year in Scotland, however one unpublished study showed that 20% of fitted transtibial amputees do not use, and 20% only occasionally use, their prosthesis at one-year follow-up. This finding has implications for patients' well-being and healthcare cost efficiency. Leventhal's common sense self-regulation model (CS-SRM), a social cognition model in health psychology, was used to determine if psychological variables would predict prosthetic use and activity limitations in lower limb amputees. METHOD: A longitudinal study recrui

Gambling urges in pathological gambling: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Gambling urges in pathological gambling (PG) often immediately precede engagement in self-destructive gambling behavior. An improved understanding of the neural correlates of gambling urges in PG would advance our understanding of the brain mechanisms underlying PG and would help direct research into effective treatments. METHODS: Echoplanar functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess brain function during viewing of videotaped scenarios with gambling, happy, or sad content. Participants rated the quality and magnitude of their emotional and motivational responses. R

A Comprehensive Approach to Outpatient Healthcare of People With Clinically Severe Obesity, According to Pathophysiological and Environmental Aspects: A Critical Review.

Severe obesity (SO), defined as a BMI ≥40 kg m-2 or ≥35 kg m-2 with comorbidities, is a complex chronic condition that poses major challenges to clinical management. Current evidence on the pathophysiological and environmental factors influencing outpatient care for people with SO (PSO) is synthesized and analyzed in this review. A literature search covering the past 10 years was conducted, including scientific articles and guidelines from scientific societies addressing these factors. The evidence suggests that conventional outpatient approaches are often insufficient for PSO, because they fa
