BACKGROUND: Informed consent requires good communication. Patient information leaflets (PILs) may be helpful, although some PILs are too hard to read for the average patient.
AIMS: We sought to examine the readability of PILs provided for patients prior to endoscopic procedures in 24 gastrointestinal and 16 respiratory departments of 24 Irish public hospitals.
METHODS: Readability, measured using the Flesch Reading Ease and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level scores, and content of all PILs were examined.
RESULTS: We received 61 PILs from 17 gastrointestinal and 7 respiratory departments, a resp

CONTEXT: Hemosuccus pancreaticus, a rare cause of intermittent upper gastrointestinal bleeding, is usually caused by the rupture of an aneurysm associated with chronic pancreatitis. Segmental arterial mediolysis is a rare non-arteriosclerotic, non-inflammatory vascular disease characterized by vacuolization and lysis of the arterial smooth muscle cells. Segmental arterial mediolysis often causes intra-abdominal hemorrhage through aneurysm rupture. To our knowledge, hemosuccus pancreaticus associated with segmental arterial mediolysis has not previously been reported.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic access to the proximal gastrointestinal tract may prove difficult for a variety of anatomic reasons. Under laparoscopic visualization, trocars can be placed into the stomach with the subsequent introduction of a flexible endoscope directly into the body of the stomach. The purpose of this study was to describe this technique and demonstrate that it is safe, effective, and feasible.
METHODS: Six patients with altered proximal foregut anatomy were examined. Five patients had previously undergone laparoscopic Roux-Y gastric bypass, and one patient had severe distal esophag

INTRODUCTION: Duodenoileal and duodenocolic fistulas are rare complications often associated with inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or peptic ulcers. Fistulas that form between the duodenum and a gastrointestinal anastomosis site following colorectal cancer surgery are extremely rare. Here, we report a rare case of duodenocolic fistula following laparoscopic ileocecal resection for ascending colon cancer.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old man, who underwent laparoscopic ileocecal resection for ascending colon cancer, exhibited no intraoperative injury to the duodenum. On postoperative day (P
