Molecular and phenotypic characterization of Streptococcus uberis isolates from bovine mastitis milk in South Korea.

UNLABELLED: Streptococcus uberis, a major environmental pathogen, is frequently linked to recurrent or persistent intramammary infections, posing a challenge to mastitis control in dairy cattle. In this study, we characterized 112 S. uberis isolates recovered from bovine mastitis milk samples collected across South Korea between 2019 and 2024. Multilocus sequence typing revealed substantial genetic diversity, with all sequence types being newly assigned, and no evidence of a dominant clonal lineage. High levels of resistance to tetracycline (81.3%), erythromycin (75.9%), and pirlimycin (75.0%)

Investigating the interplay of stressors and health in horses through fecal cortisol metabolite analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Horses are highly sensitive to stress, which can affect their wellbeing and lead to various health issues. Effective and objective stress assessment is therefore crucial for improving their care and management. The production of the glucocorticoid cortisol is increased in response to stressful stimuli and its metabolites can be measured non-invasively in feces. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the impact of different environmental and physiological stressors on fecal cortisol metabolite (FCM) concentrations in horses, with a particular focus on the relationship between stre

Dietary influence on lung injury and immune modulation in cadmium-exposed mice.

Cadmium (Cd), a toxic heavy metal found in air pollution, poses serious risks to lung health due to its efficient pulmonary absorption and prolonged biological half-life. This study examines how ad libitum (AL), time-restricted feeding (TRF), and intermittent fasting (IF) influence Cd-induced lung injury and immune responses in mice. Adult male C57BL/6 mice were preacclimated to AL, TRF, or IF regimens for 3 wk, followed by intratracheal exposure to cadmium chloride (CdCl2; 0.5 mg/kg). Lung mechanics were assessed using flexiVent, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid was analyzed for inflammatio

Optimizing oxytetracycline removal from aqueous solutions using activated carbon from barley lignocellulosic wastes with isotherms and thermodynamic studies.

The excessive presence of antibiotics such as Oxytetracycline (OTC) in the wastewater has increased health problems due to their toxic impact on the aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, their removal has become an important topic. This study aims to produce high surface area-activated carbon derived from low-cost and environmentally friendly barley lignocellulosic wastes to remove OTC from aqueous solutions. The synthesized barley wastes-activated carbon (BW-AC) was characterized using Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy, Thermal Gravimetric Analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, N2 adsorption/des

Mild Hypoxia Accelerates Cerebral Cavernous Malformation Disease Through CX3CR1-CX3CL1 Signaling.

BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity in the severity of cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) disease, including brain bleedings and thrombosis that cause neurological disabilities in patients, suggests that environmental, genetic, or biological factors act as disease modifiers. Still, the underlying mechanisms are not entirely understood. Here, we report that mild hypoxia accelerates CCM disease by promoting angiogenesis, neuroinflammation, and vascular thrombosis in the brains of CCM mouse models. METHODS: We used genetic studies, RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptome, micro-computed tomography, flu

The importance of nutrient ratios in determining elevations in geosmin synthase (geoA) and 2-MIB cyclase (mic) resulting in taste and odour events.

Geosmin synthase (geoA) and 2-MIB cyclase (mic) are key biosynthetic genes responsible for the production of taste and odour (T&O) compounds, geosmin and 2-MIB. These T&O compounds are becoming an increasing global problem for drinking water supplies. It is thought that geosmin and 2-MIB may be linked to, or exacerbated by, a variety of different environmental and nutrient triggers. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies to date have evaluated the combined effects of seasonality, temperature, and nutrient concentrations on geoA and mic copy numbers in conjunction with T&O concentrat

scRNA-seq profiling of neonatal and adult thymus-derived CD4+ T cells by a T cell origin-time tracing model.

It is well documented that the neonatal thymus-derived (neonatal-TD) regulatory T cells (Treg) are essential to prevent lethal autoimmune diseases and allergies, and neonatal and adult thymus possesses distinct output potentials for naïve T cells, including Treg. However, the molecular features and detailed functional differences between neonatal-TD and adult thymus-derived (adult-TD) T cells in terms of their ability to maintain immune homeostasis during long-term environmental influences are still largely unknown, partially due to the lack of appropriate animal models to precisely trace thes

The role of sense of coherence and loneliness in borderline personality disorder traits: a longitudinal twin study.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) implies having problems with identity and relations with other people. However, not much is known about whether these indications of BPD are present in adolescence, i.e., before personality disorders usually are diagnosed. In this study, we examined the prediction of an aspect of identity (i.e., sense of coherence [SOC]) and social relations (i.e., perceived loneliness) throughout adolescence on BPD traits in young adulthood. In addition, we examined to what degree the predictive ability could be attributed to genetic and environmental factors.

Identifying Inorganic Turbidity in Water Samples as Potential Loss Factor During Nucleic Acid Extraction: Implications for Molecular Fecal Pollution Diagnostics and Source Tracking.

Molecular diagnostic methods are increasingly applied for food and environmental analysis. Since several steps are involved in sample processing which can affect the outcome (e.g., adhesion of DNA to the sample matrix, inefficient precipitation of DNA, pipetting errors and (partial) loss of the DNA pellet during DNA isolation), quality control is essential at all processing levels. In soil microbiology, particular attention has been paid to the inorganic component of the sample matrix affecting DNA extractability. In water quality testing, however, this aspect has mostly been neglected so far,

Potential distributions of Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis causing anthrax in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis (Bcbva) is an emergent bacterium closely related to Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of anthrax. The latter has a worldwide distribution and usually causes infectious disease in mammals associated with savanna ecosystems. Bcbva was identified in humid tropical forests of Côte d'Ivoire in 2001. Here, we characterize the potential geographic distributions of Bcbva in West Africa and B. anthracis in sub-Saharan Africa using an ecological niche modeling approach. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Georeferenced occurrence data for B. anthracis an

Music Improves Subjective Feelings Leading to Cardiac Autonomic Nervous Modulation: A Pilot Study.

It is widely accepted that listening to music improves subjective feelings and reduces fatigue sensations, and different kinds of music lead to different activations of these feelings. Recently, cardiac autonomic nervous modulation has been proposed as a useful objective indicator of fatigue. However, scientific considerations of the relation between feelings of fatigue and cardiac autonomic nervous modulation while listening to music are still lacking. In this study, we examined which subjective feelings of fatigue are related to participants' cardiac autonomic nervous function while they lis

Updated canine infection rates for Dirofilaria immitis in areas of Brazil previously identified as having a high incidence of heartworm-infected dogs.

BACKGROUND: Canine heartworm infections were frequently diagnosed in Brazil before the new millennium. After the year 2000, the frequency of diagnosis showed a sharp decline; however, a few years later, new evidence indicated that the parasite was still present and that canine infection rates seemed to be increasing. Therefore, an updated survey of canine heartworm prevalence was conducted in several locations in south, southeast, and northeast Brazil. METHODS: Dogs from 15 locations having previously reported a high prevalence of heartworm infection were included in the survey according to d

Problem-Solving Therapy in the Elderly.

We systematically reviewed randomized clinical trials of problem-solving therapy (PST) in older adults. Our results indicate that PST led to greater reduction in depressive symptoms of late-life major depression than supportive therapy (ST) and reminiscence therapy. PST resulted in reductions in depression comparable with those of paroxetine and placebo in patients with minor depression and dysthymia, although paroxetine led to greater reductions than placebo. In home health care, PST was more effective than usual care in reducing symptoms of depression in undiagnosed patients. PST reduced dis

Whole-genome sequencing to identify transmission of Mycobacterium abscessus between patients with cystic fibrosis: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of individuals with cystic fibrosis are becoming infected with the multidrug-resistant non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) Mycobacterium abscessus, which causes progressive lung damage and is extremely challenging to treat. How this organism is acquired is not currently known, but there is growing concern that person-to-person transmission could occur. We aimed to define the mechanisms of acquisition of M abscessus in individuals with cystic fibrosis. METHOD: Whole genome sequencing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were done on 168 consecutive isolates o

Planktonic replication is essential for biofilm formation by Legionella pneumophila in a complex medium under static and dynamic flow conditions.

Legionella pneumophila persists for a long time in aquatic habitats, where the bacteria associate with biofilms and replicate within protozoan predators. While L. pneumophila serves as a paradigm for intracellular growth within protozoa, it is less clear whether the bacteria form or replicate within biofilms in the absence of protozoa. In this study, we analyzed surface adherence of and biofilm formation by L. pneumophila in a rich medium that supported axenic replication. Biofilm formation by the virulent L. pneumophila strain JR32 and by clinical and environmental isolates was analyzed by co

In vivo and in vitro effects of different anaesthetics on platelet function.

UNLABELLED: Bacterial ligninolytic enzymes demonstrate high stability and catalytic efficiency across a wide range of environmental conditions, with production strongly influenced by strain-specific and process parameters. Enzyme yields vary significantly depending on the fermentation strategy, with solid-state fermentation (SSF) consistently producing higher activities than submerged fermentation (SmF) due to enhanced substrate-microbe interactions and stronger induction by lignocellulosic materials. In contrast, SmF provides improved control over pH, temperature, and aeration, enabling great

Heavy Metal-Induced Genotoxic Damage in Chelon auratus: Evidence from a Coastal Gulf Ecosystem.

Estuarine and river-influenced coastal ecosystems are recognized as important sinks and channels for transfer of heavy metals into the marine environment. Continuous intake of metal pollutants could create chronic exposure situations, perhaps leading to molecular and cellular damage to resident biota, even if environmental concentrations are within regulatory limits. Thus, the incorporation of molecular and genotoxicity biomarkers into environmental monitoring programs has received growing interest, as changes in gene expression are among the earliest detectable responses to pollutant stress a
