Maternal and Fetal Outcomes Among Pregnant Women Exposed to Violence.

Introduction Domestic violence against women is now widely recognized as a public health issue and a major human rights violation on a global scale. It is a significant risk factor for women's health problems. Pregnancy places a woman under significant physical and psychological pressure, even without additional stressors like abuse. This pressure can have a negative impact on both the mother's and the child's health. This study aims to assess the prevalence of violence among pregnant women and to determine the maternal and fetal outcomes among pregnant women exposed to violence. Materials and

The Obesogenic Environment: Epigenetic Modifications in Placental Melanocortin 4 Receptor Gene Connected to Gestational Diabetes and Smoking.

BACKGROUND: Maternal metabolic insults as well as Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) influence the fetal health and may affect 'offspring's susceptibility to chronic diseases via epigenetic modifications. GDM, the most common metabolic disorder in pregnancy, can be considered the result of complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. A critical point in this view is the identification of genes which are epigenetically modified under the influence of GDM. The melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) gene plays a crucial role in nutritional health by suppressing appetite and participat

Maternal obesity causes fetal cardiac hypertrophy and alters adult offspring myocardial metabolism in mice.

Obesity in pregnant women causes fetal cardiac dysfunction and increases offspring cardiovascular disease risk, but its effect on myocardial metabolism is unknown. We hypothesized that maternal obesity alters fetal cardiac expression of metabolism-related genes and shifts offspring myocardial substrate preference from glucose towards lipids. Female mice were fed control or obesogenic diets before and during pregnancy. Fetal hearts were studied in late gestation (embryonic day (E) 18.5; term ≈ E21), and offspring were studied at 3, 6, 9 or 24 months postnatally. Maternal obesity increased heart

Cortisol levels versus self-report stress measures during pregnancy as predictors of adverse infant outcomes: a systematic review.

Systematically review existing evidence to (1) identify the association between self-report stress and cortisol levels measured during pregnancy; and, (2) assess their association with adverse infant outcomes to determine which is the better predictor. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Search terms focused on pregnancy, psychological stress and cortisol. Nine electronic databases were searched, in addition to reference lists of relevant papers. Eligibility criteria consisted of studies that included measurement of self-reported psychological stress, cortis

Association Between COVID-19 Pregnant Women Symptoms Severity and Placental Morphologic Features.

UNLABELLED: Since the beginning of the pandemic, few papers describe the placenta's morphological and morphometrical features in SARS-CoV-2-positive pregnant women. Alterations, such as low placental weight, accelerated villous maturation, decidual vasculopathy, infarcts, thrombosis of fetal placental vessels, and chronic histiocytic intervillositis (CHI), have been described. OBJECTIVE: To analyze clinical data and the placental morphological and morphometric changes of pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 group) in comparison with the placentas of non-infected pregnant women, m

Second and third trimester fetal ultrasound population screening for risks of preterm birth and small-size and large-size for gestational age at birth: a population-based prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth, small size for gestational age (SGA) and large size for gestational age (LGA) at birth are major risk factors for neonatal and long-term morbidity and mortality. It is unclear which periods of pregnancy are optimal for ultrasound screening to identify fetuses at risk of preterm birth, SGA or LGA at birth. We aimed to examine whether single or combined second and third trimester ultrasound in addition to maternal characteristics at the start of pregnancy are optimal to detect fetuses at risk for preterm birth, SGA and LGA. METHODS: In a prospective population-based c

Socio-Emotional and Cognitive Development in Intrauterine Growth Restricted (IUGR) and Typical Development Infants: Early Interactive Patterns and Underlying Neural Correlates. Rationale and Methods of the Study.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is defined as a fetal growth retardation, resulting in an estimated fetal weight less than the 10th centile for gestational age. IUGR developing brain is affected by the atypical fetal growth, presenting altered structure and connectivity and increased risk for neurodevelopmental impairments. Behaviorally, IUGR infants show reduced responsiveness and engagement with human faces during mother-child exchanges. The neural mechanisms of these patterns of interactions remain unexplored, as well as their potential role in shaping socio-cognitive trajectories of

Pregnancy: An Underutilized Window of Opportunity to Improve Long-term Maternal and Infant Health-An Appeal for Continuous Family Care and Interdisciplinary Communication.

Physiologic adaptations during pregnancy unmask a woman's predisposition to diseases. Complications are increasingly predicted by first-trimester algorithms, amplify a pre-existing maternal phenotype and accelerate risks for chronic diseases in the offspring up to adulthood (Barker hypothesis). Recent evidence suggests that vice versa, pregnancy diseases also indicate maternal and even grandparent's risks for chronic diseases (reverse Barker hypothesis). Pub-Med and Embase were reviewed for Mesh terms "fetal programming" and "pregnancy complications combined with maternal disease" until Januar

PP153. Noninvasive assessment of maternal hemodynamic function by electrical impedance cardiography (EIC) and correlation with uterine and umbilical vascular resistance in mid-pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal vascular adaptation to pregnancy involves the coordinated augmentation of both systemic and uteroplacental circulations, with the concomitant development of a new fetoplacental circuit. Disturbances of maternal hemodynamic adaptation in early pregnancy are often associated with compromise in the other circulations, although the assessment of maternal vascular function by conventional means is cumbersome and expensive. OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess maternal hemodynamic function with a noninvasive cardiographic monitor, and to correlate the findings to both uteroplacent

Successful pregnancies on nocturnal home hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Women of childbearing age on conventional hemodialysis (CHD) have decreased fertility when compared with the general population. Even in women who conceived, maternal morbidity and fetal mortality remained elevated. We hypothesized that nocturnal hemodialysis (NHD) (3 to 6 sessions per week, 6 to 8 h per treatment), by augmenting uremic clearance, leads to a more hospitable maternal environment and therefore superior outcomes in fertility and pregnancy compared with CHD. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, AND MEASUREMENTS: This is a descriptive cohort study of all femal

Increased serum heat-shock protein 70 levels reflect systemic inflammation, oxidative stress and hepatocellular injury in preeclampsia.

It has been previously reported that serum levels of 70-kDa heat-shock protein (Hsp70) are elevated in preeclampsia. The aim of the present study was to examine whether increased serum Hsp70 levels are related to clinical characteristics and standard laboratory parameters of preeclamptic patients, as well as to markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein), endothelial activation (von Willebrand factor antigen) or endothelial injury (fibronectin), trophoblast debris (cell-free fetal DNA) and oxidative stress (malondialdehyde). Sixty-seven preeclamptic patients and 70 normotensive, healthy pregn

[Socio-demographic and prognostic aspects of unfollowed pregnancies of patients admitted in the Department of Gynaecology-Obstetric of Gabriel Toure Hospital].

UNLABELLED: The prenatal followed up permit, on the one hand, to track down risk pregnancies, to appreciate the evolution of pregnancy and its repercussion on the maternal state, to finally make the prognosis of the childbirth and on the other hand to identify risk pregnancies and to assure a management outside emergency context. They contribute this fact to the meaningful reduction of the maternal mortality. The non followed up pregnancies are characterized by their important maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. The aim of our survey was to determine the frequency of the unfollowed pre

Effects of maternal undernutrition during early pregnancy on apoptosis regulators in the ovine fetal ovary.

This study aimed to determine whether reduced fetal ovary folliculogenesis in ewes undernourished during early/midpregnancy is associated with altered ovarian cell proliferation and/or the expression of apoptosis-regulating genes. Groups of ewes (n = 11-19) were fed either 100% (high; H) or 50% (low; L) of metabolisable energy requirements for live-weight maintenance during selected windows of gestation. All animals were killed at days 50, 65 or 110 of gestation. Between mating and slaughter, control animals were fed the H ration, while animals of other subgroups were fed the L ration from (a)
