Effect of air breathing on acid-base and ion regulation after exhaustive exercise and during low pH exposure in the bowfin, Amia calva.

To explore a potential conflict between air breathing and acid-base regulation in the bowfin (Amia calva), we examined how individuals with access to air differed from fish without air access in their response to acidosis. After exhaustive exercise, bowfin with access to air recovered significantly more slowly from the acidosis than fish without air access. While arterial blood pH (pH(a)) of fish without air access recovered to resting levels by 8 h, pH(a) was still significantly depressed in fish having access to air. In addition, Pco(2) was slightly more elevated in fish having air access th

Fermented mackerel processing by-products and soybean meal as alternative protein source in diets of juvenile black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii).

As compound bacteria fermented mackerel processing by-products mixed with soybean meal (FMPBS) has been reported to be a promising alternative to fish meal (FM) in aquafeeds, we hypothesized that replacing FM protein with FMPBS would support growth, feed utilization, and health performance of juvenile black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii). Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing FM protein with FMPBS on growth, feed utilization, antioxidant activity, intestinal and liver morphology of black rockfish. Six isolipidic and isonitrogenous diets were formulated to rep

A Predictive Model for the Migration and Bioaccumulation of Residual Malachite Green in Aquaculture Sediments: Simulation and Validation.

Aquatic product safety is closely linked to human health, yet the effects of historical residual drugs in aquaculture pond sediment remain unclear. Malachite green (MG), a prohibited aquaculture drug, is rapidly converted to leucomalachite green (LMG) after illegal use and may persist in bottom sediment, raising the question of whether residue-positive sediment can cause positive detections in fish at harvest. In order to answer this question, we developed a time-dependent predictive model for the sediment-water-fish system based on a food web bioaccumulation model and a sediment-water equilib

A contemporary review of seafood allergy.

Seafood is common item in the world diet; Asian countries have the highest rates of fish consumption in the world, which is higher than world average. Several studies have been conducted on the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of seafood allergy in different countries, and some of the fish and seafood allergens unique to those regions have been characterized. Review on published data showed that seafood allergy is very ubiquitous in some regions of the world. Fish and shellfish are the most common seafood that cause adverse allergic reactions among nations; the symptoms ranged from or

Effect of some physical factors on the viability of third-stage Gnathostoma binucleatum larvae.

To diminish the risk of transmission to humans of advanced third-stage larvae (A3L) of Gnathostoma binucleatum in fish foods, we evaluated the effects of some physical factors on larval viability. A3L protected within fish meatballs were subjected to freezing, refrigeration, boiling, dry heat, and immersion in lemon juice. By freezing, larvae were killed in 48 h, by refrigeration after 30 days, by boiling in 4 min, and by broiling for 60 min. By lemon juice immersion (pH 2.5), encysted larvae were killed after 5 days and nonencysted larvae in 7 h. Results show that freezing fish at -10 to -20°

A practical strategy for detection of major chromosome aneuploidies using ratio-mixing fluorescence in situ hybridization.

We describe the use of ratio-mixing FISH to visualize simultaneously probe sets specific for chromosomes 13, 18 and 21 as well as both sex chromosomes in uncultured lymphocytes and amniocytes. This method has the advantage of a smaller sample requirement than uni-colour FISH and potential for analysis of a larger number of chromosome aneuploidies using a minimum number of different probe haptenization and detection systems. An unselected series of uncultured lymphocytes and amniocytes was used to investigate the reliability of ratio-mixing FISH for diagnostic applications. The results indicate

Heat shock proteins in farmed aquatic animals: advancing animal health and welfare management through building resilience.

Aquaculture is vital for global food security. Intensification of farming practices has compromised the welfare of farmed aquatic animals and increased disease outbreaks. Conventional treatments, such as antibiotics, face growing challenges due to antimicrobial resistance and environmental concerns. Consequently, there is a pressing need for sustainable, welfare-oriented disease management strategies in aquaculture animals. One promising solution involves heat shock proteins belonging to the 70-kDa family [Hsp70s], which provide several health benefits. Hsp70s are evolutionarily conserved prot

Genome-wide characterization of the caspase family genes in different sturgeons: Insights into lineage-specific expansion and immune responses.

Caspases are pivotal executioners of apoptosis and inflammation, playing critical roles in vertebrate immune defense. However, their evolutionary dynamics and functional characteristics in basal ray-finned fish, such as sturgeons, remain largely unexplored. In this study, we performed a genome-wide identification and characterization of the caspase (CASP) gene family in three sturgeons (Acipenser ruthenus, Polyodon spathula, and Acipenser sinensis). Phylogenetic and synteny analyses revealed a lineage-specific expansion of the sturgeon CASPs repertoire, particularly within the CASP8 and CASP3/

Protective immune response in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) against the parasitic nematode Anisakis simplex.

INTRODUCTION: Parasitic nematodes are prevalent in fish populations. The parasites are pathogenic but depress host responses, which limit clearance of the pathogens from the invasion sites. We hypothesized that one of several control strategies, which could augment protection, is immunization of the fish host with parasite antigens prior to live pathogen exposure. METHODS: We used rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss as a host model and third stage larvae (L3) Anisakis simplex (Nematoda, Ascaridoidea, Anisakidae) as pathogen model. We used a total of 120 fish and immunized 40 of the fish with a

Samaki Salama - Promoting healthy child growth and sustainable fisheries in coastal Kenya: A study protocol.

BACKGROUND: One in five young children globally suffer the consequences of stunted growth and development and millions experience deficiencies in zinc, iron, iodine, vitamins A and B12, nutrients found bioavailable in fish foods. Small-scale fisheries have the potential to generate income and augment fish consumption while being environmentally sustainable if appropriately managed. However, those engaged in small-scale fisheries are often marginalized, poor, and malnourished. The Samaki Salama project seeks to better understand and address these challenges through a three-arm, longitudinal mat

Optimization of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for analyzing surface structures of nervous necrosis virus and detecting virus-specific antibodies: A technical review.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a quantitative immunoassay used to detect antigens and antibodies. In the field of fish diseases, the usefulness of ELISA has been largely overlooked due to its low reproducibility and high background optical density (OD). Nevertheless, ELISA is indispensable for evaluating specific immunity in vaccinated fishes, tracking infection history and analyzing the conformational structures and functions of the surface proteins of fish pathogens. Therefore, a highly quantitative and reproducible ELISA is important and necessary for fish disease research and

Ecotoxicological effects of pyraclostrobin on tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) via various exposure routes.

Pyraclostrobin is a widely used and highly efficient fungicide that also has high toxicity to aquatic organisms, especially fish. Although some research has reported the toxic effects of pyraclostrobin on fish, the main toxic pathways of pyraclostrobin in fish remain unclear. The present study has integrated histopathological, biochemical and hematological techniques to reveal the main toxic pathways and mechanisms of pyraclostrobin under different exposure routes. Our results indicated that pyraclostrobin entered fish mainly through the gills. The highest accumulation of pyraclostrobin was ob

Optimized immunohistochemistry using the D5F3 antibody provides a reliable test for identification of ALK-positive lung adenocarcinomas.

We used optimized immunohistochemistry (IHC) with the D5F3 antibody for detection of tumours in a prospective study of 307 pulmonary adenocarcinomas. Cases positive by IHC (1+, 2+, 3+) were further investigated by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Of 307 cases, 22 (7.2%) were moderately intensely positive (2+/3+); 18 of these (82%) were also positive by FISH. Of the four IHC-positive/FISH-negative cases, one was unsuitable for FISH and three had abnormalities of the ALK gene. All cases with weak reactivity with D5F3 (1+) were FISH-negative. The FISH positive/IHC-positive cases with mod

Modified Dietary Fiber from Cassava Pulp and Assessment of Mercury Bioaccessibility and Intestinal Uptake Using an In Vitro Digestion/Caco-2 Model System.

The ability of modified dietary fiber (MDF) generated from cassava pulp to modulate the bioaccessibility and intestinal absorption of heavy metals may be helpful to mitigate health risk associated with select foods including select fish high in methyl mercury. Using a coupled in vitro digestion/Caco-2 human intestinal cell model, the reduction of fish mercury bioaccessibility and intestinal uptake by MDF was investiaged. MDF was prepared from cassava pulp, a byproduct of tapioca production. The highest yield (79.68%) of MDF was obtained by enzymatic digestion with 0.1% α-amylase (w/v), 0.1% am

[Value of oral mucosa cast-off cells as samples in fluorescent in situ hybridization for the diagnosis of Down's syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: At present, blood and skin biopsy tissues are used in the fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) test for the diagnosis of Down's syndrome, however, the samples are usually obtained invasively. This study explores the value of oral mucosa cast-off cells in the FISH test, as samples obtained non-invasively, for the diagnosis of this disorder. METHODS: Peripheral blood and oral mucosa cast-off cells were sampled for the FISH test in 16 children with suspected Down's syndrome between March 2010 and March 2011. Chromosomal karyotype analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes ("gold sta

Correlation between the sizes of Mauthner neurons and the preference of goldfish to turn to the right or left.

Three-dimensional computer reconstruction working from serial histological sections was used to study the morphology of the right and left Mauthner neurons (MN) in goldfish fry showing marked preferences to turn stably to the right or left in a narrow water channel or showing no asymmetry in their choice of side during turns. Visually, fish with left-sided motor asymmetry had larger MN on the right side, while fish with right-sided motor asymmetry had larger MN on the left side. Fish with symmetrical turns to the right and left showed no differences in MN size. Quantitative assessment of the M

Influence of rearing conditions on Flavobacterium columnare infection of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum).

The influence of rearing conditions on Flavobacterium columnare infection of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), was studied experimentally in the laboratory and at a fish farm. In experiment I, the effect of parasitic infection on columnaris disease was studied using F. columnare carrier fish. The fish were exposed to Diplostomum spathaceum cercariae and a set of other stressors in order to induce clinical columnaris infection. Parasitic infection and other stressors failed to induce the disease. Disease occurred when the fish were challenged with F. columnare, but D. spathaceum inf

Anatomical, hormonal and histological descriptions of captive Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) with intersex gonads.

Sturgeons are known throughout the world as the source of black caviar. Their declining populations in their native habitats, mainly the Caspian Sea, due to over-fishing for meat and caviar production, destruction of their spawning grounds and water pollution, have led to their introduction into aquaculture in areas with suitable conditions, including Israel. Recently, we noticed an unusual phenomenon in these normally gonochoristic species. Several 5-year-old female sturgeons were found to have one or more testicular sections in each of their two gonads, forming an intersexual gender. Further

Dynamics of Reinfection by Neobenedenia sp. (Monogenea, Capsalidae) in Almaco Jack, Seriola rivoliana, Kept in a Cultivation System.

Fish susceptibility to parasitic infection is a crucial issue in aquaculture, where the density of captive fish increases the intensity of parasitic infections. Monogeneans are a group of parasitic flatworms that include pathogenic species for fish, among them Neobenedenia spp., which pose significant challenges for fish health in farming systems. Understanding the dynamics of parasitism in fish and how they may vary according to host susceptibility or environmental conditions is essential for the development of effective management strategies in aquaculture. Therefore, the aim of this study w
