Dynamic hip screw in proximal femoral fractures followed by "single-stage" hip arthroplasty-retrospective analysis.

The aim of this study is to present the results of single-stage total hip arthroplasty (THA) after Dynamic Hip Screw (DHS) failure, or secondary posttraumatic osteoarthrosis. From 2003 to 2020, 15 THAs were performed in group of 15 patients for the treatment of DHS failure, or for late complications following femoral neck and pertrochanteric fractures. The mean follow-up period after arthroplasty was 46.9 months (range 7-139). The patients were evaluated retrospectively-both clinically and radiographically, focussing on the demography, infection rate and other complications (revision surgery),

Outcomes of Operative Treatment of Traumatic Spinal Injuries: 2-Year Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is the second cause of complications and disability after brain injury. Although primary prevention is the best strategy, obtaining the necessary knowledge about the patient's condition and follow-up treatment can lead to the use of safety measures and appropriate healthcare planning. This is the basis of this study with the aim of a two-year follow-up of patients with traumatic SCI (TSCI) who underwent surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a descriptive and analytical type that examined 79 patients with TSCI who had undergone surgery two years ag

In-situ SEM micropillar compression of porous and dense zirconia materials.

The reduction of failure rates of small-sized zirconia devices depends on the understanding of their micromechanical properties. This paper reports the micromechanical behaviors of porous and dense zirconia materials using in-situ micropillar compression with a flat diamond indenter in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Porous and dense zirconia micropillars were made using focused ion beam (FIB) milling technique in the SEM. They were then subject to in-situ SEM compression to identify their Young's moduli, yield stresses, plastic deformation, compressive and fracture strengths, damage acc

Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Techniques of 15th Century Turkish Surgeon Serefeddin Sabuncuoglu.

INTRODUCTION: Şerefeddin Sabuncuoğlu, in his surgical medicine book entitled "Imperial Surgery" (Cerrâhiyetü'l-Hâniyye) that was published in the 15th century, described many diseases using colored miniatures, and explained the repair of these conditions using surgical methods and the required patient care after surgery. In his handwritten treatise, Sabuncuoğlu raised the curtain on his surgical methods with his illustrations. As a first in medical history, Sabuncuoğlu's book should be considered one of the most important original works from that era. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The handwritten "Im

The effect of previous acetabular fractures on total hip arthroplasty outcomes: A matched-controlled study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a safe and mature surgical method for the treatment of post-traumatic arthritis and end-stage degenerative osteoarthritis. The cohort study regarding the outcomes of THA following acetabulum fracture is sparse. Therefore, we carried out this present retrospective paired cohort study to study the long-term outcomes of patients receiving THA after the acetabular fracture versus patients receiving THA for the primary osteoarthritis. METHODS: Patients with posttraumatic arthritis who received the initial THA after open reduction and internal fixation of

Artificial intelligence for analyzing orthopedic trauma radiographs.

Background and purpose - Recent advances in artificial intelligence (deep learning) have shown remarkable performance in classifying non-medical images, and the technology is believed to be the next technological revolution. So far it has never been applied in an orthopedic setting, and in this study we sought to determine the feasibility of using deep learning for skeletal radiographs. Methods - We extracted 256,000 wrist, hand, and ankle radiographs from Danderyd's Hospital and identified 4 classes: fracture, laterality, body part, and exam view. We then selected 5 openly available deep lear

Sonographic evaluation of the injuries after traumatic patellar dislocation in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic patellar dislocation (TPD) may be associated with other injuries requiring additional treatment. The superficial localization of the knee extensor apparatus and knee articular cartilage make them accessible to sonographic evaluation (ultrasonography [USG]). PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Prospective analysis of the value of USG in TPD. METHODS: In 21 patients, 22 knees were examined by USG after clinical and routine radiographic evaluations. Based on USG findings, operative or nonoperative treatment was done (15 and 7 cases, respectively). RESULTS: In 17 knees, lesions of the m

Open reduction and internal fixation compared with excision for unstable displaced fractures of the radial head.

PURPOSE: To determine if excision of the radial head for treatment of an unstable, displaced fracture is associated with a higher rate of early complications or late arthrosis as compared with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). METHODS: Unstable, displaced fractures of the radial head treated with either excision (15 patients) or ORIF (13 patients) were compared. Implants were removed routinely during the study period. Three patients had instability after radial head excision: 2 were treated in a cast and 1 had temporary pinning of the ulnohumeral joint. Two patients in the ORIF coh

Fractures of the navicular.

Generally, large or significantly displaced intra-articular navicular fractures are treated best by surgical intervention. Open reduction and internal fixation of these injuries allow anatomic restoration of adjacent joint surfaces and preservation of length and stability along the medial column of the foot; intervention must not disrupt the already tenuous blood Supply of the tarsal navicular because of the associated risks of avascular necrosis and nonunion. The unique morphology and vital role of the navicular as a cornerstone of the talonavicular joint require every effort to maintain the

Anterior plating in thoracolumbar spine injuries. Indication, technique, and results.

The selection of surgical approach for patients suffering from acute thoracolumbar spinal trauma is presently imbued with great controversy. The surgical method chosen depends on the type of fracture, anatomic and biomechanical factors, and the habits and experience of the surgeon involved. Due to new techniques for the posterior approach and the use of internal fixators, the indications for the anterior approach must be reassessed. The primary indication for anterior decompression and grafting is narrowing of the spinal canal with neurologic deficits that cannot be resolved by any other appro
