This study aimed to evaluate the infection dynamics by TF agents in heifers from birth to first calving, in contact with R. microplus, correlating parasitological, serological and clinical aspects of the infection. We also evaluate the persistence of the infection by TF agents in cows raised with or without contact with R. microplus, and the genetic diversity of A. marginale. Three studies were performed. In the first, 15 Girolando heifers (15/16 Holstein × 1/16 Gyr) were used and monitored from birth until their first calving (start of lactation), totaling 28 months of monitoring. In study 2,

OBJECTIVE: Selecting an effective target for Leishmania vaccination requires identifying a protein antigen with low or no genetic diversity. The cysteine proteinase B (CPB) gene has emerged as a promising immunogenic target, though its diversity requires evaluation across different regions. Given Iran's status as a hyperendemic region for cutaneous leishmaniasis, this study aimed to collect and analyze 30 Leishmania major isolates from various areas of Khuzestan Province in Southwestern Iran.
METHODS: The CPB gene was amplified via polymerase chain reaction, and its nucleotide sequence was de

Flagellated protozoa of the order Trichomonadida infect a variety of vertebrates, including poultry such as Gallus gallus domesticus (Linnaeus). Several trichomonad pathogens are of significant veterinary importance due to their role in diseases that cause high mortality rates in chickens. Despite the importance of Trichomonadida in poultry health, molecular studies on these protozoa in North Africa are limited. This study addresses this gap by investigating the genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships of Trichomonadida isolated from G. gallus domesticus and its nematode parasite Heter

Haemoproteus Kruse, 1890 (Haemosporida: Haemoproteiidae) parasites are known for their high genetic diversity, avian host-specificity, and wide geographical distribution. Currently, 2019 lineages are registered as Haemoproteus species, but only 160 of them have been linked to morphospecies. Two main open access and independent databases are used to compile genetic, geographical, and host information on Haemoproteus parasites: GenBank and MalAvi. However, the data registered are not integrated, representing an obstacle in investigating Haemoproteus parasites. Here, we review all reported avian

West Nile virus (WNV), the most common mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States, is vectored by Culex spp. mosquitoes. Since its introduction to New York State (NYS) in 1999, WNV has become endemic. NYS temperatures have risen by 0.14 °C per decade since 1900, with larger increases linked to increased WNV transmission. In this study, we asked if increases in temperature in NYS influence virus diversification and adaptation, leading to shifts in thermal sensitivity. More specifically, do contemporary WNV strains have increased transmission potential at higher temperatures compare

Rabies, a neglected tropical zoonotic disease caused by the rabies virus (RABV), results in fatal encephalitis in both humans and animals. India, a high-burden country, accounts for nearly 30% of global rabies-related deaths. Robust surveillance combined with large-scale genomic sequencing of RABV is essential to monitor viral spread, evolution, and diversity, critical for developing targeted interventions. However, the lack of comprehensive whole genome data on Indian RABV isolates hampers detailed molecular epidemiological analysis. In this study, 630 RABV-positive samples from diverse hosts

The Milu deer, or Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus), a rare endemic species in China, represents a case of successful reintroduction of a species previously considered extinct in the wild. Trichomonads, protozoan symbionts capable of infecting vertebrates, are transmitted via the fecal-oral route; they are a subgroup of Parabasalia and include some pathogenic species that pose zoonotic risks. Until now, data on the diversity and prevalence of trichomonads in Chinese Milu deer have not been reported. To better understand the colonization status of trichomonads, fecal samples from 112 Mil

Bats are recognized as hosts of diverse Bartonella species, and Bartonella are known agents of human disease. Here, we reported the isolation of 26 Bartonella strains belonging to eight distinct species from two bat species (Myotis laniger and M. adversus) and their ectoparasites (bat flies and bat mites) collected from Chongming County, Hubei Province, China. We obtained whole genome sequences of the bat-borne Bartonella spp. with second and third generation sequencing. The genome size of the bat-borne Bartonella spp. ranged from 1.39 to 1.98 Mb, with the GC content from 35.30%-38.92%. Phylog

Pathogen evolution and genomic diversity are shaped by specific host immune pressures and therapeutic interventions. Analysis of the extant genomes of circulating strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a leading cause of infectious mortality that has co-evolved with humans for thousands of years, can provide new insights into host-pathogen interactions that underlie specific aspects of pathogenesis and onward transmission. With the explosion in the number of fully sequenced M. tuberculosis strains that are now paired with detailed clinical data, there are new opportunities to understand the ev

Pathogenic Leptospira spp. cause a globally distributed zoonosis with complex transmission cycles involving multiple hosts and environments. Brazil's vast ecological diversity and high Leptospira spp. circulation demand integrative approaches to understand the pathogen's genetic diversity and distribution. We compiled an extensive molecular dataset of pathogenic Leptospira spp. in Brazil, encompassing sequences (n = 825) from several genetic markers and WGS data. A molecular landscape was provided based on associated metadata, including host species, geographic origin, and source type (clinica

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae. It remains a major public health challenge worldwide, and particularly in the endemic region around the Bay of Bengal. Over decadal time scales, one lineage typically dominates and spreads in global pandemic waves. However, it remains unclear to what extent diverse lineages co-circulate during a single outbreak. Defining the pool of diversity over finer time-scales is important because the selective pressures that impact V. cholerae, namely antibiotics and phages, are dynamic on these scales. To study the nationwide diversity of

This study analyzed the molecular and phylogenetic profiles of Theileria annulata, the causative agent of tropical theileriosis in cattle, and its tick vector Hyalomma scupense in Algeria. Forty H. scupense ticks were collected in Medea, with 5 testing positive for Theileria spp. based on partial COXIII gene sequences. Positive ticks were further analyzed using COX1 and 12S rRNA genes. Two novel H. scupense 12S rRNA haplotypes and one novel COX1 haplotype were identified. One T. annulata haplotype previously reported in Algerian cattle was detected. This represents the first molecular characte

Migraines are a common type of headache affecting around 15% of the population. The signalling pathways leading to migraines have not been fully understood, but neuronal voltage-gated ion channels, such as KCNG4, have been linked to this pathology. KCNG4 (Kv6.4) is a silent member of the superfamily of voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels, which expresses in heterotetramers with members of the KCNB (Kv2) family. The genetic variant Kv6.4-L360P has previously been linked to migraines, but their mode of action remains unknown. Here, we characterized the molecular characteristics of Kv6.4-L360P

The role of mitochondria in immunity is increasingly recognized, but it is unclear how variation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) contributes to variable infection outcomes. To quantify the effect of mtDNA variation on humoral and cell-mediated innate immune responses, we utilized a panel of fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster cytoplasmic hybrids (cybrids), where unique mtDNAs (mitotypes) were introgressed into a controlled isogenic nuclear background. We observed substantial heterogeneity in infection outcomes within the cybrid panel upon bacterial, viral and parasitoid infections, driven by the mi

Blastocystis inhabits the digestive tracts of a diverse range of hosts. Transmission patterns, including host specificity, and the clinical and public health significance of Blastocystis in humans remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the distribution and genetic diversity of Blastocystis in herbivorous and carnivorous reptiles in Eastern Thailand. A total of 501 faecal samples were collected from 363 iguanas, 79 bearded dragons, 50 tortoises, and nine snakes in an animal breeding farm in Chonburi Province, Eastern Thailand. Detection and differentiation of Blastocystis was

BACKGROUND: Ovine anaplasmosis (sensu stricto) is a rickettsial blood disease caused by the tick-borne species Anaplasma ovis. The disease is characterized by mild anemia, fever, and icterus. A more severe clinical presentation is possible in non-endemic areas. There is no existing data on the presence of Anaplasma ovis in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, given the country's location within the Mediterranean Basin and the recent molecular detection of Babesia ovis, it is plausible that sheep in the region could naturally be infected with this tick-borne pathogen.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Blood sa

Host genetic variability can modulate infection resistance, although its role in infection clearance remains unclear. Hookworm disease (Uncinaria sp.) is the leading cause of pup mortality in several otariid species, although the parasite can be cleared through immune-mediated processes. We evaluated the association of host genetic diversity, body condition and immune response with hookworm resistance and/or clearance in the South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis). Uninfected pups had higher heterozygosity than parasitized individuals, indicating a negative relationship between heter

Dengue fever virus (DENV) poses a significant public health risk in tropical and subtropical regions across the world. Although the dengue fever virus (DENV) exhibits significant genetic diversity and has the potential to evolve, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the comparative genomics and evolutionary dynamics of the virus in Pakistan. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated the circulation of all four dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1, - 2, - 3, and - 4) with prevalent genotypes III and V within DENV-1, cosmopolitan genotype within DENV-2, genotype III within DENV-3, and genotype I with

Bartonella are vector-borne gram-negative facultative intracellular bacteria that can infect a wide spectrum of mammals, and are recognized as emerging human pathogens. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and molecular characteristics of Bartonella infections in small mammals within the Qinghai Menyuan section of Qilian Mountain National Park, China. Small mammals were captured, and the liver, spleen and kidney were collected for Bartonella detection and identification using a combination of real-time PCR targeting the transfer-mRNA (ssrA) gene and followed by sequencing of the citr
