Non-viable probiotics have been increasingly studied as a safer and more stable alternative to live probiotics to manage obesity and metabolic disorders. But efficacy across strains, doses, and treatment durations is still unknown. This systematic review and meta-analysis included 40 eligible controlled animal studies to quantify the effects of inactivated probiotics (by heat or sonication) on obesity-related outcomes in high-fat diet-induced obese rodent models. Our analysis showed a significant reduction in final body weight and total fat mass with supplementation of inactivated probiotics,

INTRODUCTION: There is a rising prevalence of metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), particularly in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, which needs early detection and treatment to prevent the grave outcomes. Dapagliflozin and Saroglitazar are known to improve metabolic and liver health in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
METHODS: Our study was a randomised, controlled, open-label, parallel trial of 101 patients with T2DM and MASLD. Patients were randomly assigned to receive Dapagliflozin 10 mg or Saroglitazar 4 mg on top of standard diabetes care. The primary endpo

With rising obesity rates worldwide and growing health awareness, the demand for low-calorie, blood sugar-controlling products is heightening. Particularly, research has increasingly explored the incorporation of resistant starch (RS) in dietary applications, as it does not add to calorie intake and helps regulate blood sugar levels, prevent constipation, and increase fecal volume, similar to dietary fiber. This study evaluated the quality characteristics and digestibility of malic acid-treated wheat starch (MA starch) with a high RS content for use as a rice flour substitute in Sulgidduk. MA

Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains one of the most common causes of mortality across the globe, which is strongly associated with modifiable risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. The role of the gut microbiota in influencing these factors has been established recently. Probiotics, which can modulate gut microbiota, have been investigated as a potential strategy to reduce cardiovascular risk. This review aims to evaluate current evidence on the role of probiotics in reducing CAD risk factors and to explore the mechanisms through which probiotics may

Lower extremity ulcers are a major complication of diabetic disease, often leading to a source of infection for patients. Due to delayed wound healing, ulcers quickly develop into extensive lesions leading to infections that are polymicrobial in nature and highly likely to acquire antibiotic resistance. We present the case of a 44-year-old man with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus who developed an ulcer on the left lower extremity after an episode of mild pruritus. Failure of early patient presentation to the office resulted in the propagation of infection, including areas of depth a

This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of Imeglimin in managing type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central was conducted up to March 26, 2025. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in T2DM subjects with at least two treatment arms were included in the qualitative analysis. Imeglimin, as monotherapy or in combination with other anti-diabetic agents, was compared to placebo or other treatments. Data were independently extracted by three authors, with discrepancies resolved by two other authors. Outcomes were pool

Mucormycosis (MCM) is an opportunistic fungal infection in immunocompromised hosts, most commonly associated with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus (DM). We conducted a retrospective review of 45 MCM cases diagnosed between 2010 and 2023 at a referral center in Central California, a region with high DM prevalence and significant healthcare disparities. Clinical features, histopathology, microbiology, treatment, and outcomes were analyzed. Ninety-six percent of patients had DM, and 69% had no other predisposing condition. Glycemic control was markedly poor: 36% had HbA1c > 10%, and 61% had Hb

There are contradictory findings regarding the effects of vitamin D supplementation and cigarette smoking on glucose metabolism in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Consequently, this meta-analysis focused on the association between vitamin D interventions and smoking cessation on glycemic control in T2DM patients. This study adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Cochrane Library, EMBASE and PubMed databases were used for a language-inclusive literature search until November 2022. The primary outcomes of this meta

The prevalence of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, continues to increase worldwide. Although newer and more advanced therapies are available, current treatments are still inadequate and the search for solutions remains. The regulation of energy homeostasis, including glucose metabolism, involves an exchange of information between the nervous systems and peripheral organs and tissues; therefore, developing treatments to alter central and/or peripheral neural pathways could be an alternative solution to modulate whole body metabolism. Liver glucose production and storage

OBJECTIVE: Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for dementia. We investigated whether serum levels of soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cell 2 (sTREM2), a soluble form of the cell surface receptor TREM2, were predictive of cognitive impairment in type 2 diabetes without obesity.
METHODS: A total of 166 Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes without obesity were followed-up for 2 years. We measured clinical parameters, assessed cognitive function using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), quantified and divided serum sTREM2 levels into quartiles, and examined the longitudinal a

Objective: We evaluated substrate utilization during submaximal exercise, together with glycemic responses and hormonal counter-regulation to exercise, in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Methods: Twelve pre-pubescent children with T1DM and 12 healthy children were matched by sex and age. Participants completed a submaximal incremental exercise test to determine their fat and carbohydrate oxidation rates by indirect calorimetry. Levels of glycemia, glucagon, cortisol, growth hormone, noradrenaline, adrenaline, and insulin were monitored until 120 min post-exercise. Results: Absol

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pathogenic gene and explore the clinical characteristics of maturity-onset diabetes of the young type 2 (MODY2) pedigree caused by a mutation in the glucokinase (GCK) gene.
METHODS: Using whole-exome sequencing (WES), the pathogenic gene was detected in the proband-a 20-year-old young man who was accidentally found with hyperglycemia, no ketosis tendency, and a family history of diabetes. The family members of the proband were examined. In addition, relevant clinical data were obtained and genomic DNA from peripheral blood was obtained. Pathologic variants of the c

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication that has short- and long-term health implications for both the mother and child. While lifestyle modifications, insulin therapy, and oral agents such as metformin are effective, they can be difficult to adhere to, and there remain concerns over long-term effects of oral agents on the infant. Further, GDM has no proven preventive strategies, which could be more effective than treatment postdiagnosis. Nutritional supplements are an appealing, potentially safer, and better tolerated alternative to pharmaceut

Background: Time in range (TIR) is an emerging metric of glycemic control and is reported to be associated with microvascular complications of diabetes. We sought to investigate the association of TIR obtained from continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) as a surrogate marker of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: Data from 2215 patients with type 2 diabetes were cross-sectionally analyzed. TIR of 3.9-10.0 mmol/L was evaluated with CGM. CIMT was measured using high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography and abnormal CIMT was defined as a mean CIMT ≥1.0 mm.

BACKGROUND: Insulin is essential for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and is necessary in numerous cases of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Prolonged administration of anti-diabetic therapy is necessary for the maintenance of the normal glucose levels and thereby preventing vascular complications. A better understanding of the disease per se and the technological progress contribute to the development of new approaches with the aim to achieve better glycemic control.
OBJECTIVE: Current therapies for DM are faced with some challenges. The purpose of this review is to analyze i
